About the PC Engine
The PC Engine was released in the late 80’s as a rival to Nintendo’s Famicom (NES) in Japan. The machine quickly built up a solid userbase and managed to tempt away some of Nintendo’s valued third party allies (Namco being the most notable). The tiny console (roughly the size of a portable CD player) uses a NEC’s own 'HuCard' format for game storage, but by the end of the decade NEC had released a CD-ROM drive, beating rival company Sega by a few years.
NEC’s PC Engine is actually an 8-bit machine at heart – not that you’d know when looking at some of the stunning software available for it. The console underwent a series of hardware revisions over its lifespan. The 'Duo' range of machines were basically a PC Engine with a CD drive built in. The machine was released in the US as the TurboGrafx-16 and Turbo Duo.
