UGO's Bands on Demand - Nausea

Nausea

Known for its furious high speed metal, Nausea is New York City band founded in 1987. Hailing from the formerly run down Lower East Side (now a playground for the young and the wealthy), Nausea was a fiercely political act with a metal sound and punk sensibilities. The band only released one full-length album, 1990's Extinction, a raw and furious masterpiece that derailed American society as a capitalistic war machine. Loved by angry anarchists everywhere, the band recorded a handful of tracks and an EP before breaking up in 1992. Yet despite such a short-lived career, the band remains an influential act in both the metal and punk scenes to this day. Nausea's ever-changing cast consisted of founder John John Jesse (bass), Vic Venom of Reagan Youth (guitar) and Amy Miret (vocals), along with some British guy named Neil (vocals) and a variety of drummers, including Roy Mayorga.

Why We Like 'Em

If you were to make a chart of music that can drive a crowd to headbanging, moshpitting insanity, right at the point where punk and metal converge, you would find Nausea. This angry band was the perfect mix of Slayer and Minor Threat with its heavy, speedy riffs and riotous revolutionary lyrics. Hailing from the once grimy streets of New York City's Lower East Side, Nausea was the voice of a time and a place. The '80s were on the way out and grunge was on its way in and music was taking on a darker tone. Nausea is a modern cornerstone for today's political punks - the next step in the evolution of socially aware hardcore music. It's too bad the band could only stay together long enough to record one album, but the fact that the band remains influential today is testament to the uniqueness of their sound.
