UGO's Bands on Demand - Coldcut

Coldcut

Formed in 1986 in London, Coldcut (former radio DJs Jonathan Moore and Matt Black) got their start by remixing and sampling. Cutting several remixes and extensively playing the UK club scene, the duo were able to finally release an EP entitled Hey Kids, What Time Is It?. The release served as a rallying point for the emerging British club sound and launched Coldcut to fame. Their long and storied career has been going strong since then, with albums and compilations appearing at regular intervals. Their latest effort was clear back in 1999, however, in the form of Let Us Replay, a remix album with a few live tracks added for good measure. They may not be as visible today as they were when they dominated the burgeoning techno world, but their influence is unquestionable.

Why We Like 'Em

With their old school (which at the time was ‘current' school) scratching and funky drum beats, Coldcut led the pack of emerging techno artists in the '80s to plant the seeds that would blossom into full-blown electronica in the '90s. Songs like "Telephone" and "Find a Way" sound pretty tame by today's standards, but were pretty different when they were new, opening up an entire world of rolling basslines and jungle rhythms. With often bluesy vocals and no fear of experimenting with different instruments, Coldcut's sound was made up of pop sensibilities and orchestral touches-you never really knew what you were going to get when you'd crack open a new Coldcut album. The duo has been absent from recording for a few years, but there's always a place at the table for some of the people who helped start it all.
