The week in Pop: My favorite things

I was out last Friday, so I have two weeks' worth of pop-culture picks to share. Read on, then reveal your own:

ConchordsBest TV show I saw: While Lost usually occupies this spot, I've got to hand it to the Michel Gondry-directed episode of Flight of the Conchords. I haven't given the show enough love this season, and Sunday's episode was particularly glorious.
I also enjoyed: Lost (of course), Battlestar Galactica (likewise), Top Chef (still rooting for Carla), Big Love (loving this season more than previous seasons), The Amazing Race (go, Mike White!)
You haven't seen: Party Down, the new Starz comedy, but you have to believe it's a must-see. I'm subscribing to the channel just so I can watch it when it premieres March 20. Don't let this one get canceled before its time.
I didn't enjoy: The L Word. How is it possible that this series keeps getting worse? Ugh. I wish I could dive into my TV screen and rescue poor Shane and Alice from whatever fate awaits them.

Best music I heard: Morrissey released a new album this week. Enough said.
I'm also listening to: I've seen some great live shows lately that have really lifted my mood -- last week I saw The Submarines at the Mercury Lounge, and they were just fantastic. It's one thing if you hear their records (the latest one is called Honeysuckle Weeks), but singer Blake Hazard sounds just incredible live. They have a few tour dates left, and I highly suggest you catch them while you can. You might recognize their song You Me And the Bourgeoisie from an iPhone commercial.

Also, singer/songwriter Dawn Landes opened the show, and I like her so much I'm seeing her again in a few weeks. Her song Bodyguard is a favorite, and that's on her MySpace.

A few more: D.C. musician Benjy Ferree released a new album this week, and I've been listening to that. Pop reader BIG BUSINESS may get a chuckle out of the fact that one of the tracks is called ... Big Business! Maybe that can be his theme song. (You can stream Benjy's record here temporarily.) Also, I've been listening to Ida Maria and the new record from Nickel Creek's Sara Watkins. These women don't really have a thing in common except they make really good songs. (Watkins' album isn't out until April 7, and it was produced by John Paul Jones.)

Best movie I saw: Mike Leigh's delightful Happy-Go-Lucky. If I made the Oscars, I'd give lots of awards to this movie and Rachel Getting Married.
CaddyI also watched: Religulous and Choke, but I don't wholeheartedly recommend either one of them. And if you read my Twitter updates, you know that I saw Caddyshack for the first time this week. I've spent the last few days nursing a crush on Chevy Chase, dancing like Rodney Dangerfield, quoting Bill Murray and singing Kenny Loggins tunes. I'm not sure how I managed to go so long without watching this classic film, but I'd like to think I waited until I could fully appreciate it. To quote my spouse, "Welcome to the '80s, Whit."

Best book I read: I'm in a bit of a magazine frenzy (they're easy to read on the subway), and right now all I can think about is this great Robert Pollard story from the current issue of Magnet. It's really short, but it's just about a writer who ends up getting wasted and kicked out of a bar with the Guided by Voices singer. Isn't that the dream?
I'm also reading: I just started the new Scott Pilgrim. I have a new food-themed manga I'm psyched about. This weekend I really have to catch up on my stack of comics, which is two feet high and rising.

OK! That's a lot of stuff to chew on. What are you watching/hearing/admiring this week? Please share with the group so we can steal your suggestions ...
