Bike Safety for Delivery Workers

NY Jets

The NY Jets Speak Up for Health

An audio message from a star player

Bicycle delivery workers face a serious risk of injury or death. Between 1996 and 2005, 225 bicyclists died in crashes.  Nearly all bicyclist fatalities occurred as a result of crashes with motor vehicles and most crashes occurred at or near intersections.  Nearly all bicyclists who died (97%) were not wearing a helmet (Bicyclist Fatalities and Serious Injuries in New York City 1996-2005 PDF Document (Reader Required; Click to Download) ).

Protect Yourself!
Bike lanes and properly used bicycle equipment may reduce the risk of fatalities:

  • Wear a helmet
  • Obey traffic signs and signals
  • Be visible: use front and rear lights and light-colored clothing at night
  • Ride in same direction as traffic
  • Use bike lanes whenever possible
  • Use extra caution when:
    • riding near buses and trucks
    • going through intersections or making turns
    • riding near parked cars with opening doors
  • Yield to people walking
  • Never ride on sidewalks
  • Never wear headphones

The Law

City laws require businesses to supply their bicycle delivery workers with helmets and other safety devices.  The laws also require that commercial bike riders wear the helmets while cycling on the job.

Employers must provide each bicycle delivery worker with:

  • Helmet that meets city safety standards
  • Lamp
  • Bell
  • Brakes
  • Reflectors
