“The shorebird roost at Bolivar Flats in South Texas is a truly memorable spectacle. I’ve sketched birds of the shoreline many times, but somehow a collection of individual portraits seems inadequate when trying to describe this busy event. Working on a large canvas with opaque medium—in this case acrylic—allows me to compile, edit, and manipulate figures in an attempt to bring a new natural order to the crowd of terns, gulls, peeps, and pelicans.”
Darren Rees was born in Hampshire, England, in 1961 and studied mathematics at Southampton University, teaching the subject for a short time before pursuing painting full time. As an artist, he is self-taught. Darren’s work has attracted many awards—his first solo book, Bird Impressions, was greeted by much critical acclaim and was a runner up for the Natural History Book of the Year Award. He is a member of the Society of Wildlife Artists in London and is a regular writer with Birds Illustrated magazine. He also leads wildlife tours for Speyside Wildlife in Europe and North America. He lives in the Forth Valley, west of Stirling, Scotland, with his wife and two children Michael and Sophie.
