[Downloadable Game] One of the most popular games of the early '90s is reborn! Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix, originally developed by Capcom for the arcade, makes its downloadable debut on the Xbox LIVE Arcade and PLAYSTATION Network. Capcom stays true to the foundation of the popular game by utilizing the original game code, while creating a fresh upgraded experience with new artwork and high resolution 1080p graphics. All of the art has been completely redrawn and created by UDON Comics, which currently publishes the official Street Fighter comic and is responsible for the new contemporary look of the Street Fighter franchise. Features all eighteen of the original Super Street Fighter II Turbo characters including Ryu, Guile, M. Bison and Akuma. One to two player head-to-head play either offline or online. Single player vs. CPU. Player vs. player over the same console. Player vs. player online. Training mode helps fighters hone their skills. Numerous online features: In-game voice chatting between players; Matchmaking flexibility through multiple options; Personal and friends statistics tracking; Worldwide rankings and leaderboards. [Capcom]

I can answer the more immediate question -- whether HD Remix holds up in online play -- with a resounding "Hell, yes." Backbone wisely co-opted fan-favorite peer-to-peer platform GGPO.net, which you can essentially think of as the netcode equivalent of the Google algorithm. This crazy Internet voodoo works well, and it makes for the most lag-free versus play this side of a brick-and-mortar arcade.

Unlike so many remakes of classic fighters, Turbo HD has soul...It’s definitely a must-have title for any self-respecting fighting fan. Period.

HD Remix makes most of those older releases look like cheap cash-ins. It may cost more than most arcade updates available for consoles today, but with the number of important changes being made and its extreme attention to detail, Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix sets a new standard for downloadable arcade games... even though I still think Blanka's face doesn't look quite right.

Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix is good, very good. It’s homage and a service that Capcom pays to itself and its classic as well as to all the fans that love it and will never forget. The boiling of all the memories to the old fans gets mixed up with the curiosity of the newbies without problems, Here they find a great way to get in the world of Street Fighter until Street Fighter IV comes out.

Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix is a game long in name, short on modes, but overwhelmingly high on quality and replay value. It comes up a bit short on some counts, but fans will definitely not be disappointed with the end result. If you're looking for a well-balanced online fighter with plenty of competitors, this is your best bet.

Glory era SF that'll delight nostalgists, but near-vital for all. [Issue#174, p.74]

Game Revolution
These minor faults—jerky background characters and a lack of add-on extras for the sake of variety—may seem silly when we're talking about a gorgeous remake of one of the arcade's few luminaries. Still, the lack of renovation below the surface might make the celebration short-lived.

Even though we have had our share of Street Fighter remakes over the past 15 years, this revamped version remains the most interesting of all. If you haven’t bought a downloadable fighting game yet, Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix might be the one to get but don’t expect a whole lot of changes besides improved visuals and a few balanced gameplay elements.

That doesn't mean the online play is perfect. In fact, many people have reported matchmaking issues and assorted glitches. Matchmaking shouldn't be a problem when playing with friends via invites (on either PSN or XBL), but when playing random players it's a mixed bag.

Jason H. gave it a10:
Awesome Multiplayer game! Me and my roommates got seriously addicted to this game and have been playing it for almost 6 months now. Basically it is a multiplayer version of tetris where you make color coordinated squares and rectangles to blow up with the corresponding color bubble and attack your opponent, which send the blocks onto their side. It has an online mode but mainly it is online japanese players that have mastered the game and will wreck shop on you with their Puzzle Fighter skills. The 2-Player Versus mode is the best and ends up being the only thing you'll play with friends because it is such a strategy based game. A Definite download for a Playstation 3 owner! And its only $10 too!
