I would tend to agree with him. I sure as heck won't vote for him to be the man to do it, but he is absolutely correct... our understanding of crime and it's relevant punishments are completely obscure. In fact, he's the prime example of how screwed our system is. Murderers, rapists and corrupt politicians get away with minimal punishment while kids are locked up with hardened criminals for smoking pot.
PS: The other reason people don't come here is because our government is a joke!

Here's a suggestion. Lets just scrap every mention of crime, make everything and anything legal, then we won't require the entire justice dept, NPA, correctional services, police etc. We'll save billions and no-one will need to worry about accepting bribes, pulling strings for cadres, awarding tenders to friends and comrades, to list just a few advantages.

The concept of REDS ia sound. It was planned way back in the late 90's when the govt realised that the grossly incompetent councils could not be entrusted with electricity distribution. However, many councils delayed it by refusing to cooperate. Why this was tolerated defies belief, but it was. Secondly, the REDS have to be staffed and managed by competent people. The ANC just doesnt have such people! They could have solved it by using white staff, but dont want to. Sans the staff it will fail

What nonsense. By reading between the lines you are saying that if you are a short-term investor then the JSE is a no-go. We all know that. However, if you are a long-term investor you may eventually get good returns on the JSE. Why put your money there whilst waiting for the long-term. Ideally you at least want some short-term growth especially when Div payments are down and in some co's they have dried up. All the asset managers are saying there is value yet few are buying and cash is king.

The speculation was a little premature. The suitors were supposed to be HSBC and Standard Chartered. Well HSBC has no money they are currently involved with a rights issue and SC are not big in the retail sector so draw your own conclusions. Before this CTA thing it was board exams, now whites dont have total control of the borad exams and marking they go down one level below CTA. The truth is SAICA should have played for time and wait until there are black CA's who are prepared to teach @ varsity level. When playing fields are levelled at varsity, level the playing fields at Board exam level. That way u would have taken care of dirty tricks.

I recently bought a new car for cash, no trade in (previous car was stolen). When I asked for a quote in Philwest VW Somerset West, the dealer added a R 2 250 + vat of 'handling fee' (as 'allowed by the NCA' even though I was paying cash), plus licensing and registration, and threw in a ridiculously low discount. Some dealers still don't give a damn'. I eventually bought a Toyota at a very competitive rate, no hidden cost. So I guess some dealers are not really battling after all.

@Rain, I agree with you on most points, however the dealers are not making things easier, they do not want to deal, discounts are few and far between, some are still stuck with the same attitude they had 2 years ago when people did not care what they got on their tradeins and it was either their way or the highway. Things were easier back than though, like easy credit, now people need to actually budget(good thing), with poor trade ins they are simply not going to buy new.

Assuming that these sectors are suffering from a decrease in household spending power - who is really suffering? The households!! Adding to the misery, is the downstream effect. First we were getting 'm03r-ed' continually in the past with the 'holier than though attitude' of 'YOUR DEBT IS TOO HIGH, CONSUMERS BORROW TOO MUCH, WE NEED TO COOL DOWN SPENDING', etc etc. NOW that debt levels are down, etc etc, we being told - get loans, buy buy, viz Sunday's Sake Rapport as well - the guys are almost begging consumers to get into debt again.

Sehoole says 5300 CA's are needed. At 200 writing (not necessarily passing) per year, basic math suggests it would take in excess of 26 years to catch up!! One would think SAICA would also recognise this and start looking after CURRENT CA's, and not passively look on as IRBA kills these guys!!!!! Ah, maths!

The decline in sales and in staff started from the last quarter of 2008 in our industry and, according to other articles, with the rest of South Africa. Chris Gibbons and Kunze are starting to sound like my local estate agents trying to sell me a stressed owner’s home overlooking the Kloof Golf course. A desperate attempt at talking up a parlous market, where you are 100% sure to get burnt if you get too close. Exactly who benefits from a weak Rand , other than short term super gains for a handful of Gold Miners ? A weak currency is not the silver bullet for all ills . It forces prices of essentials such as food and fuel and transport upwards . Machinery and capital equipment becomes more costly. If the SARB see prices increase, they tame it with higher interest rates. Consumers who drive the retail economy slow down spending. Exactly which counters on the JSE will benefit from share purchases due to a weak Rand. There is huge currency risk right now, so who exactly is going to be dumb enough to buy SA equities, and risk not only share price losses, but currency losses too.

No they are not gauranteed by gov. Manuel expressly said so in his budget. (They have far more urgent uses for our money, like lacing their own pockets! there have been instances in the past where depositors have been protected (Santam) but that is ad hoc. ( Even little Cyprus gaurantees bank deposits up to CP 100 000) Consider SA Retail Bonds (Government Bonds) You will not have the liquidity (2 - 5 years) but you will have security(!?) & a monthly income. www.treasury.gov.za. My sales fell by about 10K per month now at that rate I would have had to pay the staff out of my own pockect in January already. And given my personal cashflow situation that would not have worked. Investors? Lets see: they sell shares and put the money where? The other world markets are dropping, so the money coming out of US is not going elsewhere. The banks are battling liquidity issues, so the money is not going into banks as deposits. "Investors" do not put money into mattresses, and bonds aren't doing so well. Old Mutual has $20 billion in liabilites that are backed by corporate bonds in the US - we call them debentures here. Many of these bonds could default and one they do they have to be written doen to Zero - Mark to Market. This will leave a hole which must be filled by OM selling other assets - like Nedbank!!!.

Thlogi, I believe you should consider the reality of commodity as opposed to fiat currency. Currency backed by "trust" of a given government to honor value will not feed your family. Hard asset physical ownership of a given commodity(silver,gold as example)will in times of turmoil provide for your needs as the physical commodity is a tangible liquid asset, easily sold/bartered. I am a CA and I have completed the first two levels of the CFA course and even when I am willing to accept a significant drop in salary, I still cannot get work as an accountant. I am a white male so maybe that works against me??? This is fraud, and the solution is simple. Cancel the contracts, shut down the companies like M&R and re-open tenders to overseas suppliers. A delay of a few months will make no difference at all, may even get the job done quicker.
But I guess this is SA and fraud and corruption are the norm. A project like Gautrain is insanity anyway, for a lot less we could have had a decent city public transport system (wonder what the actual cost will be, close to R100b?). nuff said

GETTING THINGS DONE
Every now and then God gently taps you on the shoulder and reminds you of
what life is all about. I got just such a tap the other day. It was a day
when there was too many errands to run, too much work to do and not enough
time in the day to do it. I was rushed, stressed, and irritable. I even
snapped at my kids to hurry up and get ready for school as I worried about
how I was ever going to get everything done that day.
It was then, however, that I got my gentle tap on the shoulder. Actually,
it was more of a one, two punch from my furry friends. As I stood there
frowning with worry and tensed up with stress, I felt a sticking in my left
leg. At the same time my right hand suddenly felt warm and wet. I looked
down and found one of my cats with her claws on my knee looking up with
that scratch my head look in her eyes. When I turned to my right I saw my
drooling Saint Bernard nuzzling in for a few pets himself. I smiled at my
loving, furry friends and at the same time heard God’s gentle voice in my
mind saying: “You are not here to get things done. You are here to love.”
I thanked God for the reminder as the stress disappeared and the worry
faded away. I gave each of my kids a hug before heading out to start the
day. I still had a lot to do, of course, but now I did it with a smile on
my face. I sang joyously along with the music in my car as I ran my
errands. I did my work at home happily and easily taking several breaks to
pet my dogs, hold my cats, look at the Fall leaves, and to tell God just
how much I loved Him. I got everything done with time to spare and most
importantly I did it all blissfully, peacefully, and lovingly.
The next time that the stress of getting things done starts to build up
inside of you, then take a break and remember why you are really here. In
the end, it is the love we share, the joy we spread, and the happiness we
create that matters. Those are the things God wants us to get done.

No one in their right mind should be even thinking of equities right now, not until its 100% clear the market has bottomed out, and there is no evidence of this at all. Simply , they should be advising their clients to retire debt, if they have debt or invest in ordinary old bank deposits if they are debt free. Of course they cant say this as they need income coming into thier coffers, so they will not advise this course of action .

You clearly speak only on behalf of one, maybe two agencies, in South Africa. Not the rest! I am a client who deals with the local SA Google team and I have met extensively with Stafford. What he has done now is honorable and hopefully he does get to sort out his family and give them the attention needed. Stafford established a very strong footprint, his team has been unbelievable for us (we've kicked out our agency since working with them). Google could not have had a better man at the helm!

The writing is on the wall. Recall that deficit that was spoken about a few days ago; when dividends are paid to investors OUTSIDE of ZA, it costs the economy more. That just by the way is where the normal person on the street becomes important. The banks get those profits (dividends) from bank charges ect, hence it IS a good investment for investors outside of ZA. Thats because they cant rip there own people off, so they invest here, where banks have legal capacity to rip off clients; hence those normal people are now important.

Zimbabwe is on the brink of collapse. If Zimbabwe completely fails, the crises will be felt throughout the most prosperous part of Sub-Saharan Africa. If you think there is a lot of Zimbabweans in South Africa now, you don’t want to know how many there will be after a complete collapse of Zimbabwe. This would create a ripple effect of instability and insecurity that will affect the entire continent. We cannot allow this to happen. Give the MDC (who control the finance ministry) a chance, see what they can do. Or risk the alternatives which could end up costing a lot more than $2 billion.

I believe Mothlanthe should explain to his electorate how much is spent on Zimbabwe, Zimbabwean refugees and illegal immigrants from Zimbabwe. Charity begins at home. What guarantee do we South Africans have that money lent to Zim will not go the same way as the R300 Million which was supposed to be for seed and agricultural assistance, but ended up in the pockets of a few. If that money had been given to the long suffering South African farmers it could have improved our own food security. When will our goverment realise that it is not the ANC's money they are throwing around; but the South African Taxpayer's.

Only Trevor Manuel & cabinet really believe these figures.(and we ARE not heading for a recession).
The unemployment in this country is very close to 50% (vast majority black) and millions of kids still go to bed hungry at night after almost 15 years after democrasy.
Wake up Trevor & friends BEFORE you unemplyed as well!!

What I do not see is one consumer feeling sorry for the car industry or the parts Naamsa and Naacam? Do you get the message? Your after-sales service is pathetic and has been for years. Your standard car locally VW differs from what you exported out of the same factory and then you expect empathy. Where is the apology that you have ripped us off (e.g. VW Chico). This exactly what happened in America. How do you excuse the SEAT debacle? Of course it will not be management losing their jobs?

The focus of land reform is skewed. Land reform can effect around 300 000 black people, at huge cost. Also focus on the transfer of communal land to the occupants. 22m people live on communal land (half the population!) If the land is transferred on a reasoble basis and with training, it forms an asset, one can borrow against it, or, on sell to form a bigger concern. The land is there, it is free, it only needs to be surveyed. Millions of people's lives can be effected. What about state land?

The perfect storm was bound to happen. Car prices are ridicously high, interest rates and the New Credit Act. It was bound to happen and it serves the industry right. Now they have to deal with a sypmtom, because it is to late to remove the cause. No bail out plan will bring this back to the original status. It is a case of from borrowing from Paul to pay back Peter.

I kind of look at this differently. A GDP of about 5% is needed in SA to make any dent in the unemployment figures, and even then about 6% is needed to accommodate new graduates and matrics...so is a 1% GDP not "technically" a recession? Maybe so, but man, it is not any good, is it?

I am surprised that Sean really believes that the white SAcans want to see RSA go down the tubes. The whites built this country up to what it was before 1994. Until then everything's going downthe tube and apartheid gets blamed and the whites get blamed. who is running RSA currently? Does the government act on good advice - be it from white or blacks? -No - It's too thickheaded to respond to positive cretique. Well, at least Nedbank is worth buying, Old Mutual is not...so either HSBC or Standard Charter will score, me thinks...I'll like HSBC buying it and opening normal retail banking in SA...that will make things much easier for this expat...
