Motorists to fork out more

Feb 11 2009 14:29 Marc Hasenfuss

Cape Town - Motorists will fork out more for a tank of petrol from April this year.

Finance Minister Trevor Manuel said as road-users South Africans had gained some advantage since mid-2008 from lower international oil prices.

"As road-users we also know that there is a substantial increase in spending on maintenance and construction under way, and we still face a heavy burden of road accidents and associated compensation claims."

Outlining the rationale for increased levies on petrol and diesel, Sars' tax proposal booklet noted the importance of maintaining a strong price signal "to limit fuel consumption, road congestion and environmental impact.

He explained that these costs had to be covered, necessitating increases in the fuel levies on 1 April this year of 23c and 24c respectively for general petrol and diesel levies, and 17.5c in the road accident fund levy.

As indicated last year, Manuel said it was proposed that the general fuel levy should form part of a new municipal revenue arrangement to replace the former Regional Service Council levies.

He said that in 2009/10, 23% of the general fuel levy will be earmarked for metropolitan municipalities to support expenditure on roads and transportation infrastructure.

Nice one .. all this is is another hidden tax for the rich... Also, how are people supposed to use less petrol if the public transport system is in a shambles ( busses not getting paid, Spoornet not working etc etc etc ) THey should not make banal statements without looking at a holistic solution !!!

Make the people that are living off social grants start working for their living instead of living off the tax payers hard earned cash. If poeple keep getting everything they need for free they will never work. Fcuk social spending on those that do not contribute positively to society, cut the number of meals to inmates, hell shoot the repeat offenders to save taxes instead of giving them everything for free and increasing and raping the honest mans tax's

I would rather pay more tax on fuel than pay more tax on my salary. If the tax scales on PAYE are increased, only the aleady burdened salary earners pay up. The fuel tax way even the taxi drivers and businesses pay up. The additional tax needed to fix the country has to come from somewhere, in fuel tax everybody pay up. Sounds more fair to me as a salary earner.

Unfortunately I've always had the stupid idea that it is right to pay taxes, VAT etc...From this year, things will change. Cash is King, show a little, hide alot I say...just don't keep giving the Dog a dry bone...This government does not deserve OUR money, they steal from us, we should minimise the amount they steal.
