Lawyers like fuel levy hike

Feb 12 2009 20:12

Johannesburg - The Johannesburg Attorneys Association (JAA) has welcomed the 17.5c increase in Road Accident Fund (RAF) contributions, per litre of petrol sold.

The association's Michael de Broglio says that the increase should contribute significantly to the claimed deficit that has allegedly kept the fund in the red for several years.

However, De Broglio comments that while the increase may serve to push the fund back into the black, there is much irony in the fact that the biggest hike ever occurred shortly after a dramatic reduction in victim benefits.

"We remain sceptical about the so called deficit claimed by the RAF, like clockwork, annually. Deficit estimations are based on actuarial guesstimates which assume risks based on immediate claim payouts. In practicality, this is unrealistic and the JAA will continue to reject these claims."

De Broglio also points out that the RAF have previously adjusted estimations downward thus placing the accuracy of its methodology in continual doubt.

"Perhaps," he says, "the increased cost to the consumer will alert, again, South Africans of the continued benefit contraction while the RAF continues to fleece our pockets."

Litigation challenging the Act will shortly be launched.

Time to get rid of the RAF and have people buy their own insurance coverage. Am sure that would work in Africa......hahaha!

I'm sure given all these intelligent comments, you all realise that you will be paying 17.5 cents more per liter for a benefit than given the new legislation, you will never be able to claim against, unless you are almost dead!

This may well be a portion of the lawyers that are intent on being involved in criminal activities. This is a nice easy way to syphon money from a fat cash flush system that can be manipulated by unscrupulous and clever lawyers. A small minority really mess it up for the majority that need it.

its just a pity that most of the money for the victims dont get to the victims!!!!!!!!! also people with whiplash should not claim, it not justified, those people with REAL claims should be allowed to claim and only them, every Tom Dick and Harry is claiming and MVA "specialist" make the injuries sound worse than what they really are. I worked in the industry for 1 year and realised they are all scum bags the lot of them. Give the money to those that really need it
