PSP's WipEout Pure has one fault: bad AI, but that can be forgiven since the game pretty much excels in all other areas. WipEout Pure is, as the name suggests, a return to the roots of the series and this has been a excellent design choice. The game’s fast and smooth featuring great visual design and also the best use of the PSP’s wireless functionality. Users can download loads of new tracks, craft and skins to expand the game experience. WipEout Pure is the perfect Zen practice. [Sept 2005, p.54]

The whole package is a little overwhelming. The sleek lines of the PSP, the drop dead gorgeous visuals and the control.....ah, the control. While the analog stick placement is a little low for my liking, once you get used to it - and I mean, entirely for every game - the PSP handles like a Dual Shock with a screen.

It was a little heartbreaking to notice that Pure's controls were stiffer than XL; the aircrafts aren't quite as floaty and they don't respond as instantly either. So once again, those who were wishing for an XL-feeling WipeOut are left out in the dark.

Visually, stylistically and technically, Pure is nothing short of breathtaking. If the guy sat behind you on the bus doesn't peer over your shoulder in a slightly creepy manner while you’re tearing through the skies of Sol 2, you can pretty much assume he’s blind - that kind of breathtaking. There lies the juxtaposition within Wipeout Pure: on the one hand, it's fan service of the highest order, returning to the roots that helped them fall in love with the series in the first place, while also suffering from rife conservatism intent on keeping the structure and handling of the play predictable.

That’s the thing about Pure, once you get going and start hitting all the turbo zips, it is one hell of a fast and exhilarating experience. However, the moment you tap a wall, your machine slows to a crawl. This took me a while to overcome.

Bruce C. gave it a10:
I've played a couple of the previous versions of WipeOut and have always been impressed by this series, but the latest version for PSP is exceptional! The handling of the car is terrific; you can use the D-pad or analog stick for subtle taps, and the shoulder triggers work airbrakes for harder, tighter steering. The graphics look beautiful, almost jewel-like, and the selection of music works well with this face-paced game. You know a racing game is great when you find yourself leaning your body left and right as you swoop through the curves. The only caveat I've found is that apparently there are online downloads (extra courses, cars, etc.) available at the developer's web-site, but when I try on numerous occasions to download it times out. I suspect it's because the downloads are only available to certain countries, and my country is not one. All in all, I rate WipeOut Pure a 9.5 out of 10. Fantastic!

Impulse Payne gave it a9:
This game is almost perfect. Its fun and exciting and the racing crafts are awsome!!! screw what some critics said its a good game. Take this from a kid who's played the game instead of listening to these up tight critics who find every little mistake or glitch there is. Buy this gameand you won't be dissapointed.

Kewlkat gave it a10:
I'd have a reason on why this is the greatest psp game if I actually REMEMBERED what that reason was before I fainted from playing it. Is it possible for a game to be that intense? I don't think I'll EVER know the answer to that without dodging a couple of bombs, weaving through a few mines, outrunning a missle that's quicker than me, and trying to escape that inevitable EARTHF#CKINQUAKE that's in my rear-view mirror, all in the first lap WITHOUT passing out.

Zem Z. gave it a5:
Wipout pure for a launch title is a fbulous game. however the PSP has been lauched a long time & wipout has stopped shining. it's a fun enogh game but the boring tracks are much too limited in number, the techno tunes get old fast (& i like techno) & there is no scence of speed, when i'm going 150 i shouldn't feel like i'm going 75. stil visually impresive, raceing fanatics will find fun here but casuall racers would be better off with midnightclub3 or NFS.

Jeen LR gave it an8:
Pretty damn awesome, for a PSP launch title... Awesome graphics (especially the environment), good gameplay, and very well put together. Also: love the downloads! Some weapons from previous titles are missing (e.g. the Forcewall from Wipeout 3), and the AI is superhuman (but, weirdly, too easy to beat), but all in all, solidly deserving it's Metascore.

Assimov gave it a9:
A racing game, with good control in PSP. Addictive and entertaining. Graphics are nice (except ships, a little simple). Downloadble content is good. Now it's at low price so it's a very good buy.

Nick B. gave it an8:
Easily one of the best racing games ever made. Also one of the best looking games on the PSP, and a premiere title.
