In Resident Evil 4 players are reacquainted with Leon S. Kennedy, Raccoon City Police Department's idealistic rookie cop from "Resident Evil 2." It has been six years since the destruction of Raccoon City and in that time, the U.S. government has been able to destroy the nefarious Umbrella Corporation. Fast forward to 2004 and players rejoin Leon, who is now a U.S. agent with a top-secret mission. He has been tasked to look into the abduction of the President's daughter and his investigation has led him to a mysterious location in Europe. As Leon encounters unimaginable horrors, he must find out who or what is behind everything. Unsurpassed visuals - Resident Evil 4 utilizes the GameCube's technological powers to the fullest, creating breathtaking 3D graphics and effects. Behind the camera view - Camera follows the player from behind and allows for intuitive movement. New never before seen enemies - You'll be wishing for the usual Resident Evil zombies! Advanced AI - Enemies are now smarter than ever and use their cunning abilities to attack the player. Enhanced features - Conversations and monologues can be heard in real time. Action button - Pressing the "A" button allows players to perform various actions. Aim and shoot - Ability to zero in on enemies with weapons. [Capcom]

Magnificent. It's a terrific, if tardy, showcase for the GameCube, and it's every bit as worthy as the Halos, the GTAs, and the MGSes of this generation. This is a stunning return to form. (Happy Trails, GMR staff!) [Feb 2005]

While RE4 has a spectacular opening, the game's plot is at times as boring as a shambling zombie, and while the developers did a marvelous job with the game's graphics, its memorable boss battles, and some of the gameplay mechanics, the emphasis on action somewhat demeans the overall experience, leaving me to conclude that while Resident Evil 4 is one of the greatest games ever made it's by no means a perfect one.

I hate survival horror games. I’ve found them to be tedious and unnerving. However, there’s something about Resident Evil 4 that draws me back again and again. As good as it is though, it isn't perfect, which shows that the whole concept of a wholly linear 3rd person “horror” shooter wasn't all that great to begin with. I put horror in quotes because the game never actually scared me once, but if you're a squeamish pre-teen who can't watch Jurassic Park without wetting the bed this might not be an experience you'll enjoy.

a much needed shot in the arm for the resident evil series this is one of the best games ever made period. its not very scary and most resident evil purists will hate it but the fact remains resident evil 4 is a must own game

Mike W. gave it a10:
RE4 is an incredible game on either the Gamecube or the PS2 but the Gamecube version wins out with overall better graphics and spot on gameplay with better hit detection. This game STILL looks great even when compared to the latest PS3 and Xbox360 games and it plays even better.

Alex A. gave it a10:
I would like to start by saying that all the other people who say the story is amazing are wrong. For me the story was awful and extremely repetitive, guy saves girl, guy attempts to return girl to her father, girl gets captured, guy saves girl etc. The reason i like this game is because the gameplay is amazing the controls are so simple a monkey could play it. I don't see anything wrong with repetitive gameplay as long as its good gameplay. The boss battles are awesome, its not like most other games when you die you get pissed but in RE 4 if you die your like you son of a bitch and then you want to go back and beat it. The weapon upgrades were also a nice touch in most other games you can just by new better weapons rather than upgrading the ones you already have. All in all this is (despite it's annoying story line) one of the best games i have ever played.

Dave C. gave it a10:
Resident Evil 4 is THE best game i have played for any system yet. Although i dont have an xbox 360, PS3 or Wii yet. I am sure Resident Evil 4 will always be regarded as the game that gave life back to the series. If you played a Resident Evil in the past and didnt like it try out this game. It WILL change your views on the series. I can't stop playing it! From the amazing graphics and sounds to the story. Play the greatest survival horror game of all time and the one that re-invented them forever.

Bryan S. gave it a9:
Sexy, secret, female agents. More blood than an abattoir. Absurd dialogue. Glaring cultural inaccuracies. Leon's funny hair-cut. Parasites that somehow find their hosts in empty suits of armor. Outrageous storyline. Absurd impracticalities like a GIANT animated statue of Salazar that can run and crush buildings. Every one of these excesses does nothing but enhance the experience that is Resident Evil 4. Truly an awesome game. I smiled the entire time.

Adam D. gave it a10:
This is easily the best survival horror game of all time. Never has action, suspense, great storytelling, gorgeous graphics, and innovation been so cleverly wound together into a single game. The PS2 version is just as good and provides enough extra content to make it worthwhile even if you've played the GameCube version.

David V. gave it a10:
By far the best video game for Gamecube I've played. It was exciting, addictive, and extremely fun.
