There's a certain point in gaming where you just stop thinking about semantics of criticism and let a moment take you. It's probably after Nightmare scrapes his hulking sword across a castle wall with sparks nipping at Talim's feet as she runs up the wall ready to slice back at her aggressor. No two-digit number can validate the pure exhilaration of that moment.

There is no word to express how fantastic this game is. It combines outstanding graphics with loads of modes and characters, a good soundtrack, and brilliant, brilliant gameplay. Not only that, but the amount of stuff to unlock is unbelievably huge, and the game is also extremely addictive.

Though the controls are a bit goofy at first, the graphics and sound make the game highly palatable. The addition of Link, while wholly out of place, was a good choice, as he is an excellent character to practice, learn with and master.

Surprising the controller was really easily to use in this game, and not a hamper like in other fighting games. I am not big on using the analog control stick for fighting games, but Namco did a great job because every move performed worked flawlessly!

Bigger and prettier than its predecessor, but it really doesn’t do much to move the series forward. Everything that made the original great is still here and improved, but there is very little that is new to the series, and even the things that are new seem more toned down than perhaps they should be.

A great game. It's got all the goods you'd expect, from solid gameplay to smooth presentation. But where the game comes up short is giving you things you don't expect, and considering that the series is in many ways unchanged since it first hit the PSX back in 1997, that’s a shame.

I had my doubts as to how he would fit into the fold; but after putting this game through its paces, Link is now - far and away - my favorite character on the SC II roster. In my humble opinion, he's reason enough to invest in the GameCube version. [Oct 2003, p.126]

The Gamecube controller is not well suited for a game like Soul Calibur 2. While it has the four buttons necessary to play the game, the sliding grip on the shoulder buttons makes for poor controls of a special attack bound to one of those controls.

Soul Calibur II won't impress you as much as its predecessor, since you've seen most of these characters, their weapons, and their moves before, and the available gameplay modes are nothing out of the ordinary. Nevertheless, on its own terms, Soul Calibur II is by all means a great fighting game.

With 200 items to unlock, eight different modes, and Link as a playable character, Namco has certainly delivered an impressive package for fighting game fans. Yet if players look closely, they’ll see the package is wrapped using recycled paper tied together with frayed twine that has a few too many loose ends for such an important sequel.

Unfortunately the GameCube is my least favorite in terms of control, with the PS2 being the most comfortable controller to use... The GC D-Pad is entirely to small and finicky, the Xbox D-Pad is too rounded and sloppy but the PS2 D-Pad....it's just right.

I love what namco did by having Link in the game it makes the experience better by playing as a great long loved Nintendo character in a awesome fighting game. This game is awesome every one should get a taste of the game!

Benjamin B. gave it a9:
Best beat'em up for the gamecube.

Andrew C. gave it an8:
Soul Calibur II is a well-made fighter that has wonderful multiplayer and deep combat. The character models are breathtaking, and there's loads of unlockable weapons and other stuff. The only problem is that the computer players tend to be rather stupid, and the Weapon Master mode (SCII's story mode) is too long-winded and repetitive. But as far as two player duels go, it doesn't get better than this.

Patrick A. gave it a10:
I think the game is aswome, the graphics are fine. The most astonishing part was all of the levels. I love games like this with tons of level beacuse you dont have to get board of beating it in two weeks. This game is da' bomb!

M. S. gave it a9:
This is a positively incredible gaming experience. To be honest I could care less about the first SC because from what I've heard it's pretty much the same as this. So on that note...Let's begin shall we? The graphics. Yes these graphics are wonderfully detailed and brilliently rendered, only Tekken 5 has looked better than this. The character models are splendidly detailed, the animations run smooth as hell, and to top it off the environments look fantastic. The sound. Yes well I felt some of the voice actors and actresses were really execllent...but some of them were either overly zealous or irritating beyond belief. The best of the lot were those of Raphael, Cervantes, Ivy, Kilik, Taki, Yoshimitsu (Hilarious), and Mitsurugi. The music is terrific and suits the epic feel of the game's combat quite well. The gameplay. The gameplay is perfect...enough said. The value. There is simply a ton to do in this game and even after you unlock everything you get rewarded with more modes and characters to extend the play time double. So unlcoking is not the only reason to keep playing. It's what happens WHEN you unlock stuff. If I have one reason to score this lower than the xbox version it's this. Link was terribly executed and a joke to look at and to hear. Not at all fun to play as. But everything else is near flawless.

Tony G. gave it a10:
how did they fit all that on 1 little disc??? tremendously huge. this is why i play video games. thank the video game god this is a greatest hit title ... even though i would definitly pay $50 for it. worth what ever penny you pay. truly outstanding all around. greatest fighter of all time. perfect!

Sarah E. gave it a10:
While playing the game, I noticed how well executed the fighting moves are. I was also amazed at how realistic the very posture and conduct of each character is. I think the storyline was good but had some errors in it. Also, I was a bit baffled that the good sword, Soul Calibur, was almost just as demonic looking and ugly as Soul Edge. Overall, the game is great and the graphics are superior.

Eduardo R. gave it a10:
I used to think Mortal Kombat Deception was the best fighting game for GC. I was wrong. Besides, you can play as LINK. It makes all the diference.
