  • NERT - Neighborhood Emergency Response Team - The San Francisco Fire Department provides free training in disaster and emergency response, teaching San Francisco residents to be self sufficient in a major disaster. You'll learn hands-on disaster skills that will you as a member of an emergency response team.

SEISMIC INSURANCE AND RISK ASSESSMENTS

  • Insure.com California Earthquake Authority's rate finder gives CA consumers basic earthquake coverage rates for homeowners, renters and condo owners.
  • Homerisk.com; Web site run by EQE International, a San Francisco risk management company, provides information about earthquake risks in your neighborhood and for your type of home.

MAPS

  • Association of Bay Area Governments publishes an earthquake guide titled "On Shaky Ground," as well as detailed maps of individual Bay Area cities showing predicted intensities of ground shaking. Some versions of the maps are available on the ABAG site or you can purchase hard copies for $7-$18. Maps are available through ABAG, P.O. Box 2050, Oakland, CA 94604; (510) 464-7900. Enclose a self-addressed, stamped envelope requesting an order form or view the maps in the association's library at 101 Eighth St., Oakland, or at its Web site.
  • U.S. Geological Survey in Menlo Park has many maps. Call the Earth Science Information Center for availability; (650) 329-4309.
  • California Department of Conservation/Division of Mines and Geology is working on a series called Seismic Hazard Zone Maps. A new map for San Francisco showing newly discovered areas of liquefaction was released recently. Maps are available through BPS Reprographic, 149 Second St., San Francisco; (415) 512-6550.
