(02-03) 20:53 PST -- Rain is coming this week but not a whole lot of it, and not nearly enough to begin to bail out the Bay Area from the specter of the D word.

As much as half an inch of rain could fall in the Bay Area on Thursday and Friday, according to National Weather Service forecaster Diana Henderson.

"It's not going to be a huge soaker," she said. "Whatever's coming is not going to get us out of the deficit we're in."

So far this season, which runs from July 1 to June 30, only 6.39 inches of rain has fallen in San Francisco. The average-to-date amount is 13.13 inches. The coming rain is expected to have little effect on the predictions of a drought and water rationing.

Clouds are supposed to start rolling in this afternoon. In the meantime, stagnant air led the Bay Area Air Quality Management District to declare a Spare the Air alert, banning wood burning indoors and out until noon today.

The ban covers San Francisco, Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Mateo, Santa Clara, southern Sonoma and southwestern Solano counties.
