Roethlisberger to Letterman: 'I thought it was intercepted'

NEW YORK -- When he threw the pass that won the Super Bowl, Ben Roethlisberger thought he had blown the game for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Steelers quarterback went on the Late Show with David Letterman Monday night and told the host his pass to Santonio Holmes with 35 seconds to play Sunday night was his third read, and he thought a defensive back would intercept it.

"I was getting ready to start running and then I saw about five guys closing on me, I knew my life was about to end," Roethlisberger told Letterman.

"I saw Santonio in the corner and as soon as I let go of it, I saw the defensive back going to get it, and I thought it was intercepted. I thought the game was over. I thought I blew it. And, you know what? He made a heck of a catch -- he really did."

Letterman also thanked Roethlisberger for appearing on the show after a night celebrating Pittsburgh's 27-23 victory against the Arizona Cardinals.

"Long night -- but what better way to celebrate the next day than to be here with you?" Roethlisberger said.

"Oh, what a guy, what a guy," Letterman said, applauding.

Big Ben came into the game thinking he had something to prove...and he proved it.

Roethlisberger is just coming into his prime which means Pittsburgh fans will have quite a bit of enjoyment over the next few years.

I maintain that the difference between a good QB and a great QB is the offensive line.  Ben is proving it is possible to be a great QB wit ...(more)

Yeah, I was hoping for the Cardinals to win. but, not to take anything away from that cacth; it was brilliant, but, that throw by Ben sure did thread the needle.  Luck, maybe, but the Cardinal defender in front just missed it as the toss was over his head.  The other two Birds never had a chance.

When Ben Roethlisberger threw the pass to Santonio Holmes, I was hoping one of the Cardinals would pick it off.  But they didn't, and the ...(more)

All those Steeler haters out there - I love it. Your jealousy of a team that didn't cheat, employ a Ray Lewis, TO, Deion, Pacman, Chad J, or Has been QB is great for a true team. The future is bright for the Steelers with our young stars in Ike, Holmes, Woodley &a; ...(more)

Sometimes it pays to be lucky, but honestly, for those calling this a "great pass" they need to watch the game again.  I watched the end again from my DVR, and it was clearly a BAD PASS.

He freely admits he threw it into triple coverage and he thought it was picked.  And it should have been.  The Cardinal defenders just blew it.  Two ran into each other, th ...(more)

Fatty will go down as the worst QB to ever win 2 rings. Listening to Espn made me sick today. They act like Big Slug Ben is in the ranks of Tom Brady. ARE YOU KIDDING ME?? He's played a career with a great Steeler D. That's why he has two Super Bowl rings. Warner is the one who tore up the best D in the league while fatty had ...(more)

Big Ben exudes confidence.  He doesn't need his ego stroked like other NFL'ers.  He doesn't care if he throws 20 or 40 passes.  He understands it's all about the W.

He is the kind of guy it feels good to root for.

Take #6 and shove it up your ass.  All this bullshit about Ben and Steelers is absolutely rediculous.  If the Cards had won Ben would be a bum and not a word would have spoken about the refs and horrible they were, but because the best team won, all you haters have to come up with something to make your sorry asses feel be ...(more)

Big Ben has saved the Steelers' asses so many times this year, 6, to be exact, and came closer in a few other games. Also, while he may not be a legendary completer and td passer like Peyton Manning, he is a game-changer, and when he is on, watch out, Ds, because nob ...(more)
