Steelers No. 1 in this era, but Packers still all-time best

Steelers greatest? Doyel | Freeman | Judge

It's hard to argue with the Pittsburgh Steelers as the greatest franchise ever, but I'll call them the greatest in the Super Bowl era.

The greatest franchise has to be the Green Bay Packers.

Why? Scoreboard.

The Packers have 12 championships, including three Super Bowl victories. The Steelers have six Super Bowl titles. That's impressive, but not as impressive as what the Packers accomplished.

Green Bay won titles in the 1920s, the 1930s, the 1940s, the 1960s and 1996.

That's really impressive.

The Steelers didn't win their first title until a Super Bowl in 1974. They went 25 years, from 1947 to 1972, without making the playoffs. They were losers for years.

But the Steelers are definitely the best franchise since the AFL-NFL merger. With six Super Bowl titles, including Sunday's 27-23 victory over the Arizona Cardinals, they now have more Lombardi Trophies than any other franchise.

During the 1970s, they were a dynasty.

Winning two Super Bowls in the past four years in a system with free agency and the salary cap might be just as impressive.

The Steelers get it.

They know drafting is the way to success. That's how you sustain good football teams that will compete for titles.

Green Bay is the best franchise ever.

But it's hard to argue with the Steelers as the best of the modern era.

These are all great points to who could be the best franchise ever and I am a Packers Fan but when answering this question you can't really just pick one franchise because some franchises are better in the playoffs and super bowls than they are in the regular season its just hard to pick one team so I think the Packers ...(more)

You can't add the before merger teams. The player pool was mostly white, like every other sport, and there wasn't alot of teams. Here's the painful part... the Dallas Cowboys are the best team the NFL has produced. Thanks mostly to Landry though and not the rich doorknob running it now. Although Jones has won Super Bowls, mostly beca ...(more)

The Packers were and still are great as a franchise,  one thing to ponder is pro football in the 20's, 30's, and 40's at times may not have been as good as some of the elite college teams - ND, Army, Michigan and a few others.  During the war years Army had all the players.  That was the priority and men would rather serve ...(more)

You are comparing an era when they did not even where face masks ...as well as being a "WHITE's ONLY" SPORT ....A league that supported no more than 22 teams duringits initial  a 20 year span.....the 20 teams that folded during that time period.....Teams that paid no more than $500.00 to get a franchise back in the day... A league of a 10 game schedule??you are really trying ...(more)

I mean the ownership is stable, they dont make frantic decisions, they respect the players...at the same time the Steelers dont over-pay for players a la a Joey Porter, Randle El, Plaxico.....Look at these guys and their careers have headed in the wrong direction since ...(more)

I guess that means that Harvard and Yale are the best college football teams since they dominated the sport so much before other teams actually started to play.

Your saying that the Packers winning when there was just a fraction of the number of teams competeing, not nearly the same amount of publicity, and nowhere near the number ...(more)

Most writers think the modern era is anything after the merger and Superbowls were the ultimate Football Prize.  I tend to disagree.  I think football has to be broken down into 3 seperate classes.

1.  Pre-Superbowl Era

2. Superbowl Era (BF) - Before Free Agency of 1993/1994

3. Superbowl Era (SC) - Salary Cap football.

I think the yo ...(more)

So, Matt Millen shouldn't have been allowed in the same state as the Superbowl, much less at the game, giving us his opinion on what it might take to win.  The fact is that aside from getting there as a player, he is a COMPLETE failure.  He obviously has no idea what it takes to get a team to the Superbowl, so why does his opinion matter to anyone, outside of maybe his child ...(more)

I completely respect what the Packers did 40 years ago.  But that was 40 years ago.  Over the last 40 years, the Steelers have consistently put together a competitive team.  Since 1970, Pittsburgh has had 9 seasons with a record below .500, with 24 playoff appearance ...(more)

Yup, you heard me right.

When you are talking about "franchises" and with the teams mentioned in this article, it is only fair to compare them from the point in time that all of the teams were playing. I believe that would be 1960, when the Cowboys came in (I don't believe that the Dallas ...(more)

Obviously this debate has drawn quite a few people, and I've read a good portion of the posts.  Pittsburgh, Green Bay, Dallas, San Fran, Cleveland, Chicago.  All were, are, or always have been great franchises, depending on the time-span your looking at.

I also agree that one of the key ingredients in what makes you the 'best' franchise is Championships.  Be it in the 192 ...(more)
