Saints Row 2 is set years after the original Saints Row in a Stilwater both familiar and strange. The explosive conclusion to Saints Row has left the player wounded, betrayed and thirsty for revenge, and now it's time to take back the city that has forgotten him. A sequel to the first open-world title on next-generation consoles, Saints Row 2 features all new customization options, including gender, age, voice, crib and gang customization. The sandbox just got larger with a totally transformed and expanded city of Stilwater, offering all new locations to explore with new vehicles, including motorcycles, boats, helicopters and planes. Saints Row 2 is playable online in 2-player co-op through the entire single-player campaign or in the all new open-world competitive multiplayer mode never before seen in the genre. [THQ]

Game Informer
While – both graphically and in gameplay – Saints Row feels behind the standards set by GTA IV, it has an ace up its sleeve in the online arena: true online co-op. And it works. [Dec 2008, p.105]

A real challenge to... you know, that other sandbox game... Saints Row 2 expands on the original with a dizzying level of complexity. Stilwater is back and bigger than ever - there's so much to see and do you'll be entertained for hours.

IGN AU
On the surface, Saints Row is an easy game to hate. Actually, I have a feeling that a lot of players and reviewers will write this game off for the sheer stupidity at play at all times. But to do so would be a big disservice to a game that tries hard to do a lot of things and show you a good time. Did we have a good time? Definitely.

This game is little more than a lowbrow, yet humorous, thug-life simulator.

PC Gamer
Though not particularly memorable, Saints Row 2's huge volume of quests and goofy side missions make it one of the better open-world crime games available, but the PC port's technical scars drag it down. [Mar 2009, p.70]

This is a title that could have been unforgettable if it would have achieved more solid values in its irregular sections and specially in its technical side. Despite these flaws Saints Row 2 is still a very funny game with great highlights inside, but its console counterparts are more recommendable than this clumsy PC port.

LEVEL (Czech Republic)
This is pure anarchy. The city is full of freaks and the player is the freakiest of them all. If you like absolute freedom you will love this game. And don’t forget to check their website for the game producer Tera Patrick. [Issue#174, Jan 2009]

I maintain that Saints Row 2 is still a damn fun game and really not bad on a super-fast PC, but it's not going to be worth the effort for most.

We loved it, but if you're someone who takes games very seriously and are looking for a nigh-on carbon copy of GTA 4 this won't be for you.

And that's the Saints Row 2 PC experience neatly encapsulated: a great - and often underrated - game, but one that is rendered significantly less appealing than in its original console incarnation.

Technical problems mar this delightfully crass, immature, and over-the-top sandbox game.

There's enough crazy-insane tomfoolery to keep a machete in the hands of even the most straight-laced citizens, you'll just need a super-computer to even think about running it.

Volition did a great job with Saints Row 2, so it's a shame that the PC gaming segment won't be able to experience the game at it was meant to be played.

Kyle W. gave it a9:
Saints Row 2 can be best described as a game that knows its copying another game but also knows that it’s doing a better job of it. The PC version of this game has in no way gotten the recognition it deserves. If you like completely emo cousins calling you and asking to go get drunk this is not the game for you. If you like a sand box game that doest slap you across the face and call you a moron for killing mindlessly and instead appreciates what you have done and then rewards you with points and other bonuses this is for you, And a mention to the individual that has said this game has a boring story line, your wrong. The story line is no Oscar winning emotionally gripping tale that shakes you around before slamming you straight into the ground. Instead it’s a story that will have you laughing hysterically and at many times just plain wondering what will happen next. The game itself does have a few bugs, like its inability to keep up with itself when you begin to drive but some people have taken this to a drastic level and said it’s not worth it. It really is worth it, not to mention that the game will be patched, you just must have a realistic outlook on how long it takes to develop a patch. If you don’t buy this now wait until the patch, if you don’t mind sitting through some occasional performance lag, at $40 you can’t go wrong with this good time. I rate the game a 8.5 - 9 because unlike many people, i understand that some games need a little polishing after they come out.

Danny G gave it a4:
I played SR2 for a while shortly after buying it off of steam and came across 3 problems. Problem 1: The game does not like my Saitek keyboard. This is the only application I have run across that thinks that one of my keys is stuck. The menu looked like a slot machine cycling over and over again and my character had the sudden urge to run off once I got started. After unplugging the usb connection and reconnecting it a few times I can occasionally get it to work. Vista and Fallout 3 don't share the same issues. Problem 2: The game lag. Running on an AMD Turion 64 at 2.21 ghz with a gForce Go 7600 and 4 gigs of ram is defiantly not enough for all that is going on in the game. Even after all of the effects are off and lowest settings are chosen, game play is very jumpy. Don't plan on buying it unless you have a very good graphics card with DX10 to fully benefit. Problem 3: Keyboard driving. If you like the mouse and keyboard setup, don't bother. Tapping the directional driving key to go left makes you veer out of your lane, across the opposing lane and right onto the side walk. This affect is increased as speed is increased. I'm guessing Violation didn't test this thoroughly but there are reports that there are plans to fix this issue in the future with patches. Other thoughts: The over all story seems interesting and the fact you can do basically whatever without the game telling you "NO!" and swatting you with a news paper is quite refreshing. There is even the possibility for a cross dressing gangster nitch if you see fit. I'm hoping with future patches and fixes this game will meet my initial expectations before playing.

Ben S. gave it a4:
A cheap thrill with a story line more boring than flabby boobs. This game literally tried to sell Eazy E in order push their product. Don't confuse your love for Eazy E with this complete failure.
