Best Shooter

The Best Shooter Award is given to the best game in the shooter genre--that is, the games in which shooting is the primary game mechanic. This includes first-person shooters, third-person shooters, and the increasingly rare arcade-style top-down and side-scrolling shooters. The award is given to the shooter that is the best game of the bunch, overall. And what a bunch it was this year. Here are the finalists:

Half-Life 2

(PC)
Publisher: VU Games
Developer: Valve Software
"Half-Life 2 is a very impressive and engaging shooter, and a faithful follow-up to one of the greatest PC games of all time." - Jason Ocampo, from GameSpot's Full Review

Halo 2

Publisher: Microsoft
Developer: Bungie Software
"Despite a rather short campaign and a disappointing storyline, Halo 2 is an exceptional shooter that frequently delivers thrilling, memorable, and unique moments in its online, co-op, and single-player modes." - Greg Kasavin, from GameSpot's Full Review

Far Cry

(PC)
Publisher: Ubisoft
Developer: Crytek
"Far Cry isn't just a stunning technical accomplishment. It's quite possibly the best single-player first-person shooter experience for the PC since Half-Life." - Jason Ocampo, from GameSpot's Full Review

Painkiller

(PC)
"Painkiller is a simple first-person shooter at heart, but it's very well-put-together and does what it does exceedingly well." - Greg Kasavin, from GameSpot's Full Review

Unreal Tournament 2004

(PC)
Publisher: Atari
Developer: Epic Games
"No other multiplayer-focused action game has this much to offer." - Sam Parker, from GameSpot's Full Review
