NCAA Football 2010 Wishlist

December 3, 2008 3:50 pm - Author: Community Writer

LucianoJ has taken a break from his regular FIFA articles to share his NCAA 2010 wishlist. SportsGamer will be releasing their weekly War Room discussion featuring wishes from participants later this week. What are some of your wishes? Share them in our forum.

Each year this series is one of my favorites. But like the BCS system, EA Sports re-creation of the college football experience is far too flawed to be perfect. It has all of the qualities of a spectacle: good graphics, good audio, and enough of the on-campus atmosphere to draw you in. I like the work Tiburon does, but I am not satisfied with the finished product, and find NCAA Football 09 to be a bit of a disappointment. I hope EA will make the necessary upgrades and tweaks to give it Last Gen playability, fully harness the power of Next Gen hardware, and bring it up to the gameplay level of NHL and FIFA. An drastic overhaul like for Madden 09 isn’t what I am asking for, leave much of the surface of the game alone. Tiburon needs to do arthroscopic surgery on the NCAA franchise.

Improve the pass rush: sacks in NCAA Football 09 were few and far between. How often can you remember seeing your defensive linemen flipped like gymnasts by overpowering CPU O-Linemen? Blitzing doesn’t help, and changing the number of men up front doesn’t help, either.

Balance out the turnovers: this year there have been too many interceptions and not enough fumbles. NCAA 09 has more pick sixes than the Illinois Lottery. Granted, some of the previous versions I played have been fumble fests. When you got ahead, you had to cringe when your best runner or receiver would cough up the ball and the momentum would shift. Turnovers should increase and dropped passes should be more likely in bad weather. Let QBs fumble a snap every once in a while.

End the Robo QB: Quarterbacks are far too accurate. Only the best should go 16-for-20. The ratings and overall quality of the QB should factor into the passer rating. Make a QB more inaccurate on his next couple of passes if he took a shot while running the option. On 3rd downs the CPU was certain to convert because of this pinpoint accuracy. Teams with bad or jittery receivers should drop a few passes to drive down the completion percentage.

Improve the CPU play calling: Throwing with a 7-3 lead with 32 seconds in a game is not smart. Whereas previous CPU QBs would throw deep with to a devastating degree, this year’s opposing AI throws short too much, in my opinion. Running excessive zone reads instead of using a feature back is a mistake. When do you ever see a CPU draw? CPU play-action? Making CPU running backs better on simple run plays could be the counter-balance to killing off the Robo QB.

Fix the option: the mechanics are off, the pitches and catches by the running backs are awkward looking, and the QB practically jogs. The option is a thing of beauty when run correctly. Offensive football is more than the passing game.

Fix the sprinting: the animation is choppy, and the difference in speed between defenders and offensive players is ridiculous. Even in pursuit the offensive players chasing someone down who is on the way to yet another Pick Six are too slow. Give them a sense of urgency to run down that DB headed for the house.

Bring back Create-A-Playbook: Allow us to select a dozen formations, then check off the specific plays from that set. Previous versions of Madden had it.

Allow for Create-A-School, with FCS School uniform templates: While there are some out there who want to play with Appalachian State, EA was lazy about updating the old D1-AA rosters from year to year. Give us this option to build a program from the ground up, but cap player ratings to keep us from having FCS schools with players rated in the 90’s as well. In Create-A-School, you could have players on existing teams transfer to your program, as well.

Bring back refs, chain gang, and coaches on the sidelines: While this year’s players standing along the sidelines looked ok, not having coaches hassling refs, or some player-coach interaction doesn’t look authentic. Can’t someone at EA do motion capture of someone getting a Gatorade bath? Should there be an official spotting the ball, instead of just giving the signal for penalties?

Another improvement to the presentation could be making better use of the ESPN license. Does that last sentence sound familiar? Keep the announcing team, but don’t worry about the goofy-looking, pre-game Corso picks. New warmup video during pre-game would be good. Give us more school-specific opening material, other than the blimp shot of the stadium. Why not have a sideline reporter, like Erin Andrews or Lisa Salters, open up the second half or end the first half with comments on her interviews with the coaches? This interview could essentially be gameplay hints to gamers. This would also serve the same purpose as those coaching pop-ups in NCAA Basketball.

Don't forget the special teams! Bring back blocked kicks. Allow for bad snaps on punts and field goals. Bring back reverses on returns.

And finally, a special request. Please let us create a conference. This could be like taking online dynasties one step further. For example, let’s say you decide to create a conference of only Texas schools. Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, TCU, SMU, Rice, North Texas, Houston, Baylor would play a round robin schedule. You could set this up as online with eight other friends, or play it offline against the CPU. You could create a conference of up to thirteen teams. If you wanted to check off an option of having a season-ending conference championship, you could.

I would love to see improved support with the Madden franchise in imported college drafts. Scale it so the best in college don't come out in the NFL with overall ratings in the high 90s.

Those impact caliber players should be limited to the top 5-7 players. They need to coordinate better so you can have guys that play good in college and struggle in the NFL, as it happens in real life.

This needs to happen

Make the running game easier. Not tooooooo easy, but a little easier.

Make the offenses realistic-TTU, UT, and OU have good deep passing games, but the reason their QB's complete so many passes is because of the quick six-yard passes and some of the times the receivers or tailbacks will take the ball fifty-sixty yards up the field after a two-yard pass.

I agree with sniperhare. when i played through 4 years as a scrambling QB with University of Oregon, i came into Madden with 91 throw power 91 accuracy and 99 speed. my smart QB rating was 75...

i mean i am not complaining or anything because its a blast dominating in superstar mode, but its just unrealistic. plus, when i went to start the superstar mode over because i didnt like my team, my ratings were drastically lower. and i tested this, and each time i reloaded the imported my superstar, the ratings kept fluxuating.

I want realistic playbooks (and realistic gameplay mechanics for those playbooks), damn it.

I found that connector you were looking for
Cindy, is this the thing you were looking for?
www.liangdianup.com/computeraccessories_1.htm
It's on the list of computer accessories and parts. They have the DVI video thing to convert that jap monitor to work with your other computer. Just about any other kind of wire adaptor, usb connectors, monitor extension wires, ps2 extention wires, and all kinds of female and male swap connectors and things that I think would help your shop. If that above link don't work then goto www.lducompany.com and click on computer accessories. Let me know if that is what you need and give me your email address again.

I agree with everything you have on there. Since the move to the current gen of consoles, EA sports has really skimped on features. The last few years they have struggled with getting the correct medium on things like turnovers and other realistic parts of the game. I'd like them to also add some stuff to add more realism to Dynasty mode. I remember in some older NCAA Football games sometimes one of your players would break rule or not keep up with his grades, and you would choose whether or not to suspend him, how long to suspend him, and if you didn't ever suspend players you could get in trouble with the NCAA. Dynasty mode needs as much realism as possible. If that means they need to drop Campus Legend, so be it. But if they aren't going to make some significant changes to Campus Legend, they might as well leave it out of the game. It was good on the old consoles, but since the move to the current gen Campus Legend (and Superstar on Madden) have been pretty terrible.

I would like to see more detail on the players such as a larger selection of cages and hip towels that you see players wear
Posted by: slycooper21 on December 9, 2008, 3:10 pm
This is a great list, if these things happen for next year, this could be one of the greatest sports games ever made. Like you said, a big thing for me is the college atmosphere. For example, The University of Clemson's players always touch Howard's Rock and run down the big hill. And everybody knows about the University of Michigan's tradition of touching the Go Blue banner before running on the field. I would love to see some authenticity. 09 was very good and I still play it today, but 2010 needs to feel like you are watching a college game on TV or actually being at one.

Make the game more realestic
Posted by: GeorgiaQb7 on December 16, 2008, 8:14 am
I have 3 improvements that should be added to NCAA football 2010.First scrambling quaterbacks have two much of an advantage people hike the bal and immediately scramble to the sideline to throw a paa to get a better angle that is completelu unrealistic. I feel when people do that icons should dissappear to make it fair for the defense.Second we need the real plays in the game.Certain teams have speccial plays that make their playbook unique(Floria,Ole Miss,Georgia Tech). In this case EA whoever does the plays have them watch the Sec Championship between florida and alabama, watch the the game betwwen lsu and arkansas a year ago were #1 lsu was upset, watch the georgia vs geogia tech game this year becase in these three game those 3 team i named used all their special plays and used their whole arsen of plays.most people are specific want to see the right linemen pull or block on certain plays.we need to bring the qb avoidance back ,when getting blitzed ur only option is to throw a pick get sacked or throw intentional grounding.Last teams with super speed such as florida on offense or florida state on defense needs to be countered because im sick of crossing routes or screens going for 70 yards.
Posted by: BuckNut11 on December 20, 2008, 8:15 pm
One thing that I would love to see is the historic teams. They were on the 06 version and it was fun to play with them. I would love to be able to play with the 1993 Seminoles or anyone of those teams in next gen. Another thing on that, if it happened, would be getting the uniforms to be authentic like pre-50's with leather helmets and what not, 70's and 80's baggy jerseys, 90's those jerseys that were real small and exposed the lower body. Also some minor things, to get back eye black and nose strips would be nice. Back plates that you have the option to have tucked or exposed, mouthpieces, short sleeve under armor. And more facemasks, for revos, there is a different sort of robot facemask that is common in real life but is not in the game, also the visors do not fit the revo helmets. I like the idea of better pre-game, seeing Script Ohio, Tommy Trojan, Chief Osceola from FSU, Notre Dame hitting the sign, The Sooner Schooner, stuff like that would be awesome. Create a School would be good but only if it were highly detailed, not just basic uniforms and helmet designs, you should be able to find any picture online and somehow get the system to read it and be able to duplicate it and be able to do that with logos instead of getting stuck with generic letters or awful pictures like thunder and wildcats. Formation subs. More in depth stats for dynasty, so you would be able to look back on any game you played no matter how long ago you played it. Maybe better kept history of who you have beaten and the scores. Maybe like a hall of fame kinda deal for great players, where you can place their jersey in the shrine. One other thing that would probably have to be part of 2011 is Create a Rivlary, pick teams to form a new rivalry and possibly create a trophy for the winner. A coaching mode where you start at a "bad" school and have to work your way up to a good one. Create a Playbook which was earlier mentioned would be great too. Snow and rain accumulation for bad weather games would be good, like the Gators were vd Florida State this year, Tebow's jersey was brown. Saving a dynasty or game at the pause menu during a game would be nice. faster movement through stats and rosters like it used to be. Better animations(probably the biggest gripe.) After winning a rivalry game or a bowl game, some kind of celebration with a trophy raising by the players, especially bcs bowl games, some kind of recognition other than "congratulations on being national championship champions"(yeah it says that but it doesn't make sense.)

I think you should rely consider adding more types of helmets and different types of face mask that brings a lot to the game play and it makes the game more appealing. You should also create more types of running styles and and make the fast guys more quick and real to how fast the real game play is.I really agree with bringing back the create a team mode where you can make your own jersey and stadium even down to what you are sponsored by.
Posted by: GeorgiaQb7 on December 22, 2008, 1:41 pm
This is my second post and i was just thinking one thing that is vewry unrealistic is running styles. The players run really gay.Like when running the option players run straight up and just pretty much whenever running the players are straight up.In NBA 2k9 each player has their own distinguished style.well the same should be for NCAA 2010.Maybe you can use NFl players as base running styles. For example Reggie Bush has his own style of running and Lesean Mcoy definetly runs like reggie Bush and even Joe Mknight does a little bit but definetly Lesean.Adrian Peterson also has a distinguised running style and i think Knowshon Moreno runs like Adrian Peterson as far as style is concerned.IF ea noticed the overall game is pretty good its the little things that people complain about because those little thinkgs make the really real or unreal when playing against superb teams. The juke system nedds to be remodeled its like the jukes work against the cpu but when playing against someone else they know when your going to juke and pretty much which way so i think a reggie bush type of juke needs to be added where the juke is quick multiplication of two or three moves maybe a stutter step and then somekind of juke that really has ur oppenet think u will juke that way.

I'm a USC alumnus and fan. I also am a sucker and have bought this game as a collectible for the past six years. Some of this is to get the cover of the USC players like Bush or Palmer.

So, here's my list of needed corrections for 2010.

1. I agree with the post about the running styles. There was some sort of change in the style running this year and the players (on my XBOX 360) appear to be moonwalking or taking extra steps at times.

2. The celebration videos are not taking advantage of the download capability at XBOX Live. The added storage capacity means that gamers with bias towards certain teams should be able to automatically share the (1) roster corrections, (2) adds for correct post-score crowd animations, (3) photos on the title screens need to be more varied, and (4) custom stadium sounds.

3. Custom Stadium Sounds need more opportunities to customize.
I purchased the Trojan Marching Band CD and uploaded to my XBox, then set as Custom Stadium Sounds. However, there are several situations where the sounds are not quite matching. I'd like to applaud the development team though. This CSS feature really adds to the realism of the game. Some missing customized sounds are pre game cadence, half-time band work, post-game Conquest and Alma Mater. Still, CSS is great and really added to the realism after customized. Please provide an upgrade path in 2010 so I do not need to reload all the sounds again!

4. Missing some key USC elements:

A. Song Leaders are in white uniforms, not cardinal. They are placed at the Peristyle end of the field. The USC Yell Leaders are placed around the perimeter of the field and are in cardinal. The team animations sometimes are incongruous with the way the college actually presents itself.

B. Trojan Marching Band is not in the stands at the peristyle end of the field. TMB is also missing from the opening sequence and the half time game is missing. I know this is Football, not Band 101, but if it's in the stadium, it should be in the game.

C. Missing Tommy Trojan and Traveller as celebratory videos. Traveller gallops with Tommy Trojan on his back from the tunnel, along the end zone perimeter, down the USC team sideline and back after each touchdown. This video gets repeated each and every time USC scores. We do not get tired, but the horse does. It would be hilarious if you had the video of the horse galloping quickly in Quarter 1, but if the horse has to go out more than 5 times, then Traveller gets a little slower but still enjoys the crowd. The horse always has fun in the stadium and seems to really enjoy the roar of the crowd and the excitement of the game.

D. Missing the Coliseum torch lighting ceremony at the end of the 3rd Quarter and before the 4th Quarter. Torch must be lit and burning during 4th Quarter.

E. At end of the game, the video cameras run out on the field for post-game, on-field interviews with some of the players. This media attention builds as the team does better and better. If the team loses and falls out of top 10 ranking, then the media attention is conspicuously absent.
Posted by: khayashida on December 25, 2008, 3:51 pm
Another poster remarked on the college atmosphere. The overhead pre-game shot of the stadium is with the stadium full.

I've enjoyed when EA Sports has the crowd size begin to thin out as the game moves through the 4th quarter and is a blowout.

I've tried to get blowouts early on just in order to see the crowd thin out but can not really understand when the crowd stays in their seats. There have been games where USC is visiting and blowing out the opponent, yet the stadium remains full.

I'd like to see some better reaction shots also. Since the game is going for the ESPN/ABC look, the game designers should notice the "reaction shots" that the ESPN-CF directors get.

You can summarize some of these shots as follows:
1. Tight crowd shot of a celebration after touchdown. You guys tried this during other iterations of the game with some limited impact.
2. Tight crowd shot of people being stunned or quiet after their team gets scored on in game changing moment.
3. Coach reaction on side line.
4. Coordinator reactions up in the booth
5. Announcers in booth

Toggle these things in a Picture-In-Picture box.

The only thing id like to see added on to this would be more custumization options. i mean adding more facemasks and helmets, dreads, hip towels....u stuff like that. i dont think thats to much to ask. but they realllly need to bring back the old gen features like create a school, pre game presentation.

Can the NCAA Football 2010, on editing a player, can they make it that you can choose what color shoes and socks you want. And update the newest facemask products.

IVY LEAGUE schools!

In fact, they should include the Championship Subdivision teams, but at a minimum they should bring back the Ivies.

It would be nice that there wasnt such a disadvantage for the defensive awareness as i read an article before 09 came out saying there trying to appeal the "casual" market aka sell more copies and make money. i play online thats all i do and im tired of rookies throwing for 300yrds and scoring 45 points a game on even though i win. last yr was much better. i dont care about the "casual" market forget them if they suck at playin online thats there problem go to practice mode but online isnt for everyone dont penalize us the good players that like competition by making it easy to score and pass all over us good players just to make it fun for the "casual" player so theyll buy a copy STUPID. LAST i think they drastically enhanced the mismatch of a tall WR such as 6'4" and up over a smaller corner like 5'11" or less i know that tall WR are good in real life but how many can you name outside of Gregg Carr for FSU that dominate there corner no matter how short they are????? online if your USC you can do deep slants like a inside post route and push up on the left analog to throw it high and they will jump up and catch it EVERY SINGLE TIME no matter what you do. they need to demerit the taller WR a little bit to make it realistic and just base the catching ability and play ability based on the athlete in general not the height. so if you wanna score at will online this year just use a team with just a decent QB and really tall WR and throw it high and you will march downt he field all day long on every single drive this years game is disappointing to say the least who cares about the "casual" players let them play a dynasty against the computer let us die hard college football fans enjoy the competative best man wins online play which is what online was designed for not the "casual" players.

Alot of these features are great but i would also like for EA to bring back the global play books like they use to have in 99 u could use the global play book and that would make your offense that much deadlier and about the blocked kicks and lower the interception rate and add more fumbles this is what they really should do. At least do a % of fumbles, int, blocks, fumbled snaps, and lost fumbles. the fumbled snaps consists of all snaps so bottom line a percentage should be done to fix these problems. come on lets be real there are some games that have no turn overs and then there is game with 6 turn overs if you turn the ball over more than twice that will destroy your teams momentum

I think you should make your superstar lift rather than going to the menu and say lift, and it just says speed(+1) and all that. You should also get to have two superstars play together on the same team, because if you have a buddy that wants to play when you do you should be able to have him on your team as well. Also make the playbooks more realistic. Don't have a throwing team run alot.

I really like all of those ideas. especially in create-a-school ones. i often create schools in NCAA and i feel ur idea on the tranfers would make it better
Posted by: clemsonfan11 on January 1, 2009, 2:51 pm
I just recently played ESPN football and all the animations, the coaches, chain gang, sideline reporters, crowd improvements, etc. are all in it. Maybe EA shuld take a look at it
Posted by: atlraiders on January 1, 2009, 9:58 pm
I agree 100%, ea should definately bring back the create a school, and maybe have some superstars of college football like reggie bush, vince young, matt leinart, etc.,that have already graduated, and have them available on create a team,as well as transfer students from different schools.ea obviously needs to add the little things like different facemasks, mouth pieces, etc., and i liked the superstar mode better when it was in third-person view in the previous games, just my opinion.
and PurplePride28 had it right, every time i enter my draft class into madden,i'll have half of the class rated above 90%.i even had pat white rated as a 91% QB!!lmao.and i used to love seeing corso's pregame predictions by putting on the mascots helmet.BOOMER SOONER!!!
Posted by: vipcorey on January 3, 2009, 4:52 pm
Um yall need like a online virsion of superstar or whatever...like u as the running back and other ppl as whatever their postions are u could either make a league like fanisy football.....or u could do it like halo with a red and blue team and it matches random ppl together....and like a person from head coach or somthing coaching the game or a computer one......or somthing like that god I can't believe yall haven't thaught of that yet.....im sure yall can make that work out if so that would be a huge hit......tell the makers of madden too

Another thing Ncaa needs is chaingangs because if a team go's for it on fourth down and throw the ball to the reciever and they are short but they say they get the first down but you know they didnt get it and when you challenge it they is know first down line so you cant tell. Let the crowd run on the field when you make a big upset like Texas tech and Texas. Make the running style better and faster like they do in real life. Give us More acessories like Qb towels, hand warmers, underarmors that come half way down the arm like player way them in real life, put the newer helmets on there. When you edit your player let us put dreads (the real looking dreads not the one's that in poney tails and long hair on the players like do in real life maybe more people would buy the games and yal will make more money. put all of the mascots on there like usc trojan man and the texas longhorns bull and oklahoma when boomer and sooner in the wagon. Put halftimes shows, pregame shows, puts d2 schools on there and one more thing Please put the band back on there like they where on ncaa 07. Please EA PLEASE PLEASE put all this stuff on there i bet you more people would buy Ncaa... People who never played ncaa probably would buy it.
Posted by: legal24 on January 11, 2009, 9:19 pm
Also When Players get hit to hard let helmets come off.

Campus Legend:

Let us pick the color of our high School team and let put logos on the helmets (put alots of differents variety of logos to choose from) let us have a season on there with our high School team.

If a team is sorry that year let there not be as much fans in the stadium, let there be fans with there shirt off with there bodies painted
Posted by: Stallion33765 on January 13, 2009, 8:09 pm
A few things need to be addressed on the online dynasty 1. Need to be able to set up custom conferences 2. possibly be able to add more than 12 people 3. Add a message board for commish to set up rules and advancing dates 4. commish needs to be able to know when user/user teams are playing their games and user/cpu games are played somewwhere on the lockers 5. It would be nice for other players to be able to actually see the games in progress. Just a few things to consider for 2010 online dynasty
Posted by: Stallion33765 on January 13, 2009, 8:12 pm
Oh and 1 other thing: It would be nice to see the field being tore up and the players getting dirty on grassy fields
Posted by: Stallion33765 on January 13, 2009, 8:14 pm
Oh and another thing lol, It would be nice to have people come running out on the field after a huge upset-----that maybe hard to do, but maybe for future games
Posted by: Stallion33765 on January 13, 2009, 8:17 pm
The last thing lol: It would be nice to be able to link 2 or more dynasty's together so that online leagues can be strickly 1 conference and 2 or more leagues would be able to play each other during regular season and in bowl games
Posted by: reginald_rush on January 18, 2009, 6:37 pm
I think that either there should not be a cap on how many impact players a team has or they should eliminate impact players all together. Also, impact players should be 90 overall players.
Posted by: reginald_rush on January 18, 2009, 6:40 pm
I think that substitutions should be shown on the screen, have players run on and off the field.
Posted by: jerikokai on January 20, 2009, 2:19 pm
I love the shaking routes for teams away from home. but what about camera shake? BRING THAT BACK. camera shake plus route comfusion...thing of beauty!
Posted by: TL8706 on January 21, 2009, 1:06 pm
If coaches are added to the sideline (they are the stars of college football) how about being able to transfer coaches between NCAA and Madden?
Posted by: TL8706 on January 21, 2009, 1:07 pm
They also need to get the uniform colors right this year around. (who screws up the Iowa home jerseys?)
