Battlefield Vietnam

(PC)
Publisher: EA Games
Developer: Digital Illusions
What's amazing about the soundtrack to Battlefield Vietnam is that while you can instantly recognize many of the classic tunes in the game, odds are you haven't really heard them before. Ironically, many of the famous antiwar anthems from that era are now mainly heard as audio snippets in commercials, movies, and television shows. As a result, it's almost weird to actually hear these songs in their entirety.

Of course, you'll get plenty of time to hear them, as they're used to help pass the long load times at the beginning of each battle. But Battlefield Vietnam also incorporates the music brilliantly into the gameplay itself. When you jump into any vehicle, you have the option of switching on the radio and blaring the tune of your choice for all the world to hear. It's almost surreal to be caught in an intense firefight and then hear Edwin Starr's famous "War" approaching from the distance. Even better, jump aboard a Huey and relive the thrilling air assault in Apocalypse Now by pumping out Wagner's "Flight of the Valkyries" while skimming the jungle at treetop level. It's both a visual and auditory thrill.

Battlefield Vietnam features an excellent collection of songs that you've always probably associated with your parents. But you'll gain a new appreciation for these famous anthems, even while you're busy fighting and dying and fighting again in the jungles and cities of Vietnam.
