Music Server Set-Up

by thennig - 12/31/08 7:51 AM

I would like to know if anyone created a music server system and how you did it. I use iTunes as my software and my media pc (not really a media pc, but it’s hooked up to the TV…. it's very old) as the music server. I have the pc hooked up to my surround sound receiver (Yamaha THX). I ripped all my CDs lossless (best sound available). I did buy a digital sound card for my pc so I can run a digital cable from the pc to the receiver. One other note… I use a master iTunes index file and replace that file on all my computers so it’s playing the same music list and accessing the music server.

Only as a test.

It was too much work and the latency issues that happen make this a dead end. Those that haven't done this will have to try it before it all becomes clear.

How did we do it? We used VLC (VLC media player - the cross-platform media player and streaming server) and that was that.

Fast forward to today and we just pop the content onto an iPod and place that in the dock.
