I've had 5 miscarriages and 2 healthy children after 9 1/2 years of fertility issues that ran the gamut. My heart truly goes out to you. It will get better, I promise. Be good to yourself and let yourself feel whatever you may feel. Don't pretend, just go with the flow :)
[ Reply | Options ]02.15.09, 05:21 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]thanks. i'm really lucky b/c i had healthy kids before the miscarriages. which i think makes it easier for me philosophically. but it's so hard to have it snatched away. trying to readjust all my thinking, all my plans, etc. and the anxiety. this feeling of instability b/c you start realizing anything can happen and it can happen to you, not just to other people.
[ Reply | Options ]02.15.09, 05:24 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]What the miscarriages and fertility have given me is perspective. When I'm exhausted (which is a lot these days), I remember how sad and hopeless I felt without my kids. Be grateful, which I know you already are, so push through this. I know that having a plan is comforting, but life gives us what we want and don't want. Do something special for yourself this week (eat a brownie, go a for a walk, get a massage, read a junky magazine...something!)

I was watching Dateline with Octupussy last night. She has 3 kids with various soecial needs (autism, speech delay/"tiny amount of autism", & I can't remember). They said she receives $ for their disabilities. Does that mean she gets money to pay for their services, while here in NYC we just get services either in or out of school? Financial payment doesn't strike me as a good way of doing it. Anyone know? I have heard that NYC has a much better quality than most states including CA.
13 replies [ Reply | Watch | Options ]02.14.09, 04:33 AM [ Flag ]NY does have top-notch services. I didn't see the Dateline, but I know my sil is a speech pathologist, and she says NY has some of the best services in the country (and that the test to be certified in the state of NY was much harder than in other states). When our ds was in Early Intervention for speech in NJ, we had to pay on a sliding scale. But, I hear in NY, EI is free.
[ Reply | Options ]02.14.09, 04:45 AM [ Flag | link to this post ]yes, I have heard NYC is great comparatively from many people in the biz. But why would CA just give $? There must be some rules about how you use it as otherwise a mom could spent on whatever, right?
[ Reply | Options ]02.14.09, 05:51 AM [ Flag | link to this post ]That's true. MANY poor people move to NY state with their kids who need services--even if they're broke enough to be homeless (because NY state also guarantees shelter for families).

Don't know, but I hope they're not just sending her a check. You KNOW she's spending it on acrylic nails and plastic surgery. And exactly how does a woman with six kids get enough time/rest to recover from PS? This woman is a scammer extraodinaire!
[ Reply | Options ]02.14.09, 06:51 AM [ Flag | link to this post ]np: how did she get $ for ivf? isn't that hella expensive? and does she have any help w/ her kids?? i can barely take care of two kids by myself. go figure 6 or 8 or 14!!
[ Reply | Options ]02.14.09, 06:53 AM [ Flag | link to this post ]
The check is for the child. She has put the child on disibility, it's supposed to be life long. I think the check is federal. so she's getting three disability checks per month. The state or city she lives in also provides services and schooling.
[ Reply | Options ]02.14.09, 07:30 AM [ Flag | link to this post ]So does it go into a trust? Is it supposed to used for food/shelter? My kid can't work either, but we still shell out for food/shelter ourselves.
[ Reply | Options ]02.14.09, 10:37 AM [ Flag | link to this post ]No the mother can spend every dime anyway they want. There are many cases of fraud, kids on disibility when there's nothing wrong with them. Mothers can get doctors to fill out paperwork by claiming they've seen child have seizure... things like that.

For IVF'ers - did you do anything to mentally/physically "prepare" for the first cycle, and did it help? Doing acupuncture and trying to eat heathily, but that's about it.

[ Reply | Options ]02.12.09, 01:27 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]Ideally she likes to start 6 months before the procedure but she felt 3 months would be enough time for me to get the benefits from the acupuncture and herbs. I think part of the reason she put me on the herbs was because I was working with a 3-month timeframe. I went to her in June, July and part of August and found out I was pregnant in August. My second IVF was to start the first week of September. Was on the schedule and everything at NYU. LOL. She's Victoria Koos at Yin & Tonic.

[ Reply | Options ]02.11.09, 06:13 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]I think it should be noted that weird as we may think it - we was just "using up" the embryos from past IVF attempts. Apparently she had used 6 embryos on each of her past attempts and all but one had resulted in a single live birth (one set of twins) so it was not off the mark for her to expect one child out of this.
[ Reply | Options ]02.11.09, 06:27 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]Only a quack of an MD would go along with that request. In any case, given that she's poor with no income, one would *think* six kids would be more than enough.

But fertility treatments are so unregulated in this country, it's pretty much a free-for-all.

[ Reply | Options ]02.11.09, 05:50 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]np from above: other than financially, she was managing the other kids just fine. that's not easy. i think her desire and decisions to do so many ivf's with so many embryos is alarming, to say the least. but so many of her other comments made a lot of sense to me. and again, her kids certainly seem happy.
[ Reply | Options ]02.11.09, 05:55 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]am convinced you are stupid. she is not managing her other kids. they live with her mom. her mom is paying for everything, plus food stamps, plus disability pay. Secret I will keep to death: Could have done selective reduction with my twins. Dh wanted to abort both b/c didn't know was an option b/c he was freaked out b/c we already had one kid. I have no regrets about not telling him.

I went through a period where I had some regret b/c my family had offered to help me out both financially & with the kids & that never really happened & DH is very bitter. My mother begged me to keep them while DH's parents pressured to abort & try for one kid a year later.

I'm surprised doctors would do selective reduction with twins -- I would imagine that the risk associated with aborting just one is higher than the risk associated with carrying twins. I thought the only reason they do selective reduction with high-risk, high-multiple pregnancies.

It's a CHOICE. I have friends that reduced triplets to twins and friends that reduced twins to a single. It's what was right for their families at the time. You know, if society is going to accept IVF and other extreme fertility treatments, it only makes sense to accept selective reduction to avoid the myriad problems that can happen in multiple pregnancies and births (yes, even twins).

Survey: Petite moms -- did you go into labor before or after your due date? How much before or after? I'm small (5'2" 100lbs pre-pregnancy) and 35 wks preggo and just wondering if being petite makes a difference. Like, doesn't the baby run out of room!?
4 replies [ Reply | Watch | Options ]02.11.09, 09:31 AM [ Flag ]Nope, I'm almost identical in size to you and was one week late with #1 and induced on due date with #2 (did not go into labor early). Both dbs were 8lbs 9oz, so apparently they had room to grow! I believe size isn't as important as genetic predisposition -- did your mom go into labor early or late?

She disgusts me but I have to say I feel even more anger toward the doctor who implanted the embryos. I think fertility specialists like to claim that they are objectively treating the disease of fertility (supports their argument to get insurance and state funding for their work) but they're clearly able to see the results of their actions. This insane woman created life she can't support, but the dr. was presumably sane and equally complicite. I think the dr. should pay instead of me as a CA tax-payer.

My boss today asked me if I was pregnant, so I lied and said no when in fact I am 10-weeks. She's only asking because she knew I was trying and was about to start the IVF process. I stopped talking about it when she said to me, "You know, when you start taking the drugs you have to tell us because we have a right to know if you're going to be moody!" At which point, I stopped answering all her intrusive questions about my life. Now it's going to be truly awkward when I do tell them. Her feelings will be very hurt. By the way, it's a small family company. My DH thinks that it would be best for the relationship for me to tell them sooner rather than later, whereas I want to wait until as late as possible because I hate all of the intrusive questions. WDYT?

How did you decide whether to have a second child? So confused. Can't decide and running out of time. I'm almost 40, dh is 53 and our dd is 14mo (and she is awesome, but definitely not an easy-going child.) I am sahm right now & our hhi is around 220K. Any advice please??!!

[ Reply | Options ]02.10.09, 06:58 AM [ Flag | link to this post ]OP: I think my main reason for having #2 is for #1 to have a sibling. I can't imagine not having my sisters. All I can say is that I had a dear friend in the same position and she went for it and never said, I wish I never had number 2! Sounds like income should not be an issue at 220K, although many on this board would disagree.

We were younger than you and your DH when we were wondering this (35 and 36), but we had a second. Now we're in the same debate (or, I am) about having #3. For us, the idea of going back to sleepless nights and nursing every 2-3 hours was a short term sacrifice for the longer term gain of not having another. I suspect you'll never regret having another; you may regret not having another. Also, it's a pretty extraordinary gift to give your child a sibling. There are times I worry that I have more "healthy" years behnd me than possibly ahead of me, and that I won't likely meet or see my grandchildren grow up and this is sad. I've also just lost my father, and it sucks, and I worry that having a child at 40 increases the chances that they too will be young-ish (relatively speaking) when they may lose a parent. But the parental pull/urge is pretty strong. I'm lucky to have an incredibly hands on DH. That's a "pro". And I am continually amazed at my two DC and how extraordinary children are. I love that they have each other. I love the idea of giving them another sibling.

8 replies [ Reply | Watch | Options ]02.09.09, 02:20 PM [ Flag ]Oh, well. She should mind her own business if she doesn't want her feeling hurt. I never understand bosses asking intrusive questions, whether it's a big company or 4-man shop. But you may have invited the questions by being a bit too open about getting pregnant. And the moody thing was so out of line.
[ Reply | Options ]02.09.09, 02:30 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]It is perfectly reasonable when you do tell her to say (if you feel the need to!) that you are sorry you couldn't tell anyone when she asked before but it was so early on you hadn't told anyone in case things didn't work out. Maybe you shouldn't have been discussing the fact that you were trying to get pg if you didn't want her to discuss it with you.
[ Reply | Options ]02.09.09, 02:32 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]I know, I probably shouldn't have but if you've ever gone through any sort of fertility process, you know there are lots of doctor appts associated with it. So she was in the know during the IUI's we were attempting, bu then I stopped talking about it completely after the "moody" comment. She would still inquire and I would blow her off or one time I actually told her that I didn't want to discuss it any further since it was too "painful" (which is isn't for me) and so she didn't inquire for a whole 24-hours maybe and asked again the day after!
[ Reply | Options ]02.09.09, 02:43 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]
You realize you opened the door when you talked to her about TTC. Lesson learned. But otherwise I would say what the poster above suggested - that you didn't want to say anything until you knew the baby was healthy.
[ Reply | Options ]02.09.09, 02:39 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]Also you don't have to tell her how far along you are and if you do, keep it real vague like instead of saying weeks or months, say trimester instead.
[ Reply | Options ]02.09.09, 02:40 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]Ideally I hold off telling them until it gets obvious, which for my first child (conceived naturally) was around 6-months. I don't know if I'll be able to pull that off this time. Part of me wonders if it would lessen the hurt for her if I did tell her after 12-weeks, but then I'll be asked intrusive questions every day for the next 6-months!
[ Reply | Options ]02.09.09, 02:46 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]See if you can hold out beyond 12 weeks. Maybe some clever dressing when going to work. LOL. But once you make the announcement say your are so thrilled to be pregnant and will not discuss any details of the conception because your future is so bright. You may have to repeat yourself before she gets the hint.
[ Reply | Options ]02.09.09, 02:51 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]Yes, I will definitely have to convey to her that it's not something I want to discuss at length.

I tried for five years to get pregnant and at 38 years old I looked into IVF. I now have a son who will be 7 years old. At 41 years old, I wanted another child and decided to try naturally before looking into IVF. I purchased "answer" followed the directions and at almost 42 years had a girl naturally who is going to be 4 years old. Yes, IVF is hard on the body but after 35 years the risk factors start to go up. After 40 years you will have a battery of tests. It is possible to have children after 40 but how long to conceive is the question?

[ Reply | Options ]02.09.09, 07:09 AM [ Flag | link to this post ]I don't understand your point. Many people get pregnant naturally after 40. In fact, so frequent is this occurence that NO ONE on this board would ever advise someone at age 43 or 44 to stop birth control because the likelihood of pregnancy is so small. I know, I've posted that question and all the responses were stories of "accidents" at mid to late '40s. Of course it is harder to get pregnant the older you are, but do you have another point?
