f anything can be said about the PlayStation 2, it’s that longevity is in its genes. Why? Because well into the lifecycle of its successor, PlayStation 2 sales are still going strong. According to the official PlayStation Blog, this past December the PS2 broke the 50 million units sold mark, becoming the first video-game console in history to do so.
The 50 million hardware units are complemented by over 500 million software unit sales. For this reason Sony argues that the PS2 remains the most-played console to date. We won’t argue with them – we still use our PS2 all the time. Primarily because our PS3 isn’t backwards compatible. Ugh.
In it’s ninth year, the PlayStation 2 continues to sell at retail, is being bundled with newly released games, and remains a viable platform for developers. That is what we call validation.
