ack in November we brought you news of Red Eagle Games’ plans to bring the high-fantasy Wheel of Time franchise to gamers worldwide. The news had fans excited and cautious at once, as very little information about Red Eagle Games and their umbrella company Red Eagle Entertainment is available.
Red Eagle disclosed in their initial announcement that they have big plans for the lifetime works of author Robert Jordan. Not only do they plan to craft an MMORPG, but will develop a line of stand-alone Wheel of Time titles slated to release on consoles, personal computers, handheld systems and wireless devices. Red Eagle Entertainment also has a movie adaptation in the works.
While fans of any property are always hesitant to see work translated to a different medium, we can’t fault them this time. Robert Jordan’s books usually total well over 700 pages, with his last expected to be broken down into two installments due to its overwhelming length. For this reason, Jordan – who recently passed away – had been vocal in the past about not wanting his properties to be watered down for film or for video games. He believed that only an ongoing television series would do the property justice. Undoubtedly the announcement that Red Eagle intends on translating the property to every platform imaginable – including mobile phones – has fans on edge. It may take proof for them to believe Red Eagle has intentions other than to milk the lucrative franchise.
But on to the new news. Just today more Wheel of Time information became available, as Red Eagle announced that they have partnered with Electronic Arts as publisher on the future Wheel of Time projects.
“EA Partners is excited to team up with Red Eagle as their global distribution partner for games based on The Wheel of Time series,” said David DeMartini, senior vice president and general manager of EA Partners. “The Wheel of Time series has a massive worldwide following and we’re excited to help give Red Eagle Games’ interactive products a blockbuster launch on the global stage.”
So does the partnership help qualm fears? Perhaps a tad, but we still wonder how Red Eagle plans to distill such epic works of literature.
