The 'other' antivirus apps

It's true. Some security apps get more fame and recognition than others. Why is Spybot Search & Destroy cited more often than BitDefender Free Edition, or McAfee's online virus scan better known than Trend Micro HouseCall, a tool that also removes what it detects?

In a stab at fairness, we've picked out five of the more overshadowed, but still reliable, antivirus software titles and highlighted their main points. Give them a whirl and let us know in the comments why you can't live without your favorite undersung security app.

these programs aren't used often because they _suck_

a better queston would have been "why is AVG cited at all?"

ok, i read the two paragraphs, was intrigued by the title, watched the slide show, yet I dont see any reason to try these. I kinda expected a write-up on each one, even a small one comparing it to something else...

I had a netsky virus and probably others that had almost entirely locked up my computer. I couldn't use many programs and it wouldn't let me download stopzilla or other big anti-virus wares (adaware, mcafee couldn't get of it either) I was able to download superantispyware (free edition) and it was able to fix all my lockups and popup messages and so far I haven't had any problems. I am very happy with it!

i just switched from kaspersky's to esets smart security. it's a big difference in performance. i tried threatfire, it slowed me down. i've always used house calls, i log in once a month for a scan. superantispyware is one of the better free spyware removers. i'd use it before adaware, spybot, etc. the article would be better if you had comparisons to all the over hyped products pushed off to people as "good because its free" or because they're a sponsor on the site. but that's how advertising works i guess and people fall for it

seriously people dont understand how ESET NOD32 works... you only need to scan once just after you install... then it scans every thing downloaded or copied to your compy,,, also scans every .exe file you execute, if its a virus it gets deleted.. i think why people dont like NOD32 is because it does everything for you,,, you dont need to interact with it... haha suits me just fine

I have being using AVG Free edition plus spybot, adware 2007, zone alarm firewall free for while whitout any complaints, a few weeks ago i decide to try other options just to see how reliable where those ones so i switch to Avira Antivir, comodo firewall, spyware terminator and spyware blaster, when run them in safe mode i was happy that they didn't find any threats. I move back to my first combo of softwares just because i was more comfortable with them. One particular software A-square free i install it in my other laptop just to test it and it works great is an excellent tool it detects many rootkits and some other minor threats that other similar softwares let it pass, I'm even considering using it in my main laptop. I will like to see some charts on how different softwares or combination of them works on a particular system configuration, because is hard to recommend softwares without being completed sure how they will affect others system performance.

Ive been fixing windows pc's for alot of years for ppl, I know what works and what doesn't. I know there is a place for AVG Free in this world, but i dont trust it on my own pc, so i wouldnt tell others to trust it either. I know that theres not one McAfee product out there i would spend one red cent on. It doesn't work, and it doesn't play well with windows.
I like running freeware as long as i know it does what it says it does. One in particular is spybot S&D. I does what it says it does, not to say others dont do well. I do use combinations when need be to get rid of threats not easily removed by one peice of software. I also try new ones that have been referred on forums. I think ppl try something and dont know what they are doing and then they tell ppl it didnt work.

I feel the need to weigh in here. I tried SuperAntiSpyware, and after running it for several weeks on 3 different PCs, all running XP, I found that it slowed my system down, and my kids hated the constant pop-ups to approve performing various tasks. The process of getting uninstalled from the various system was also an arduous process, I would think it was gone then I'd see it in the taskbar again and have to go search out remaining traces. Definitely can't recommend it.

I tried Bitdefender.... The OTHER kind of virus ware: Romanian Vampireware!!!

I am not completely naive: I checked it out a little and found several different complemenatry reviews on different sites. (I didn't check CNET.) I may have been a little too trusting. It seems Bitdefender has waged a internet forum and ad compaign that snowed me anyway. I went looking for trial ware and ended up with BitDefender free edition thinking I had trialware. Then I got a virus that was recognized but couldn't be removed no matter what I tried, including booting in safe mode. I realized that the spyware tab was greyed out like it wasn't a functioning part of the software leading to a belief that a upgrade was in order. I was upset because I thought I had fully functioning trialware software. I emailed sales and they sent me some download links. I realized that BitDefender misrepresented things and actually had NO TRIAL VERSION and I would have to buy first if I wanted an "upgrade". I felt misled and was angry and mistrustful and with the problems on my computer I couldn't continue to surf the web safely so I had to walk into a brick and mortar store and buy Virus ware. I got Spysweeper. It told me I had like SIX viruses on my system and removed them all except the one BitDefender recognized but could not remove either. The one BitDefender had recognized as a mildly dangerous virus and not removed Spysweeper recognized as a highly dangerous virus and could not remove.. I had to do a complete reinstall which happily went well (even though I downloaded every night for almost a week to get my service pak 2 and 3 and other upgrades and downloads. I have dial up)

I have had Norton Symantec for years and never had a virus once except for a few cookies. I got tired of the rising price and the slowed performance. I had to upgrade my old Dell to one gig memory just to surf the internet. Spysweeper isn't as idiot proof as Symantec but scans and downloads are much quicker in Spysweeper.
