Book Review
Whatever the value of the product I find the extract from the
license that I quote at the end completely unacceptable. I do not understand
what purpose it is intended to serve. As I understand it I violate the
license if I change my monitor. Worse than that, if I am using a dual
monitor system (as is not uncommon in development environments) I must ensure
that the copyright material is always displayed on the same monitor. Of
course most purchasers will simply ignore the copyright restriction but such
stupid, draconian restrictions only bring the whole issue of copyright into
disrepute. In the current environment where many individuals run more than
one computer any reasonable license should be tied to the person not an
aspect of the hardware. There is also the question of what is meant by using
software on a screen. If I never display it but simply let the compiler use
it? What if the compiler then elects to display it because of an error in
the software? No the whole issue is too stupid to get involved with. Users
should refuse to buy items with this kind of restriction.
Under this shrinkwrap license, our software is licensed by the
screen, not by the CPU. You must have a separate license (or unit of a
multiple unit license) for each physical screen on which our software is
actually used. A workstation screen, an X-terminal, a PC or Macintosh screen,
or an ascii terminal each count as a single screen. You must decide which
physical single screen this license applies to, and you must identify that
screen to us, on request, by a serial number or other unique identifier.
(This is not a "floating" license.) You may transfer this license from one
screen to another, but only after notifying us, by regular mail in writing,
of your intent to do so.
