TXU: THE REAL TALK OF THE STREETS
How do you get your music?
Mike Skinner
The Streets made no 2 in a test
The first official download chart launches today on our sister station Radio 1.
It gives you the rundown of the 20 most downloaded tracks from sites like iTunes, OD2, mycokemusic.com and Napster.

What do you reckon the first number one is gonna be?
Do you download tracks already? Will the new chart change the way you get your music?

djandrewmartin
In a way its great! I think it will show the industry just what music is listened to more. i think it is also a great chance for unsigned talent to get releases, cos, you will have the big dominators doing they're thing, and you will have unsigned people finally getting an investment in music cos it doesnt cost anythin to put the music out.

Sekkle.
in a way its good coz u dont have to catch bus to go virgin n buy d ting but stil. its kinda bate dat you can get the same tunes for free. i thinkn they should create a method dat you can get the tune on your hard drive but u arent able to put it on cd get me. so u stil have to buy the ting any way and man like Double Titch JME Kano n Wiley will get the paper they deserve blud GET MEEE! emtie . blessy

R
The download chart will be ignored by real music fans and the fact that Westlife topped it shows how out of touch the this chart is with the listening public.

Matthew Darling, pass me a cup of tea!
the charts are meaningless anyway. It's really a list of which record producer is raking it in at the time. Real music lies outside this marketed rubbish.

Greg
I have paid to download tracks in the past, I dont mind paying if Im getting a track early and if the price is sensible. What I'd like to see is more download sites where you can purchase tracks by smaller artists, like all the UK hip hop, garage etc, which sometimes has such limited distribution a lot of people never get to hear quailty stuff. I dont want to see download charts getting bigger than the real thing - its still all about buying real albums, even if it does cost a few quid more.

charlotte
i think that its bad in a way because soon the normal charts are going to disappear which have been part of our history for a number of years now and they will be taken over by downloaded music which I think in a way is sad. although i do think that cd's in general are far too much money today and so peple will look for cheaper alternatives for downloading music, so in a way its the companies who produce the cd's fault in the first place. if they reduce the price of cd's then people may be more willing to buy rather than download....

Keith
I think this chart is more volitile and more accurate than sales of cds and singles. You notice a trend on download services. I use iTunes and tend to purchase something when I hear it, be that in a commercial, a shop or wherever. I am not restricted by sales, stock and marketing. I think more people react this way.

Tim
I'm old; nothing beats going to record shops and coming out holding the purchase and anxiously hurrying home to listen to it. Downloads?....far too lazy and cold~~

silver dolla
bob the builder needs 2 hush! hip hop and rnb are dominating the charts not 2 mention influencing other genres of music

Nickolai
The chart is pointless. most people download songs they cant buy anymore like in the 10 hour takeover and most people wont bother paying - why if u can get it for free?

Bigger
Times have changed. Tapedecks, LP players, CD players and now it's all about what you got on your hard drive. the download chart will definitely change the way the consumers get their music. i download and it's convenient for me to do that. why spend money on an album that i know i wont like most of the tracks? just spend the same money on getting the tracks i want from the net.

Ali Raza
It will be a good way for promoting artists who do not get a lot of play on the most popular radio stations

Kip
Like other music charts, this one will be a sham. It's not based on what people really listen to; it's based on highly marketed music that people are downloading from highly marketed sources. Music today is a business. The fact that the industry can actually plan for a "musician" to be number 1 in the charts just goes to show how much of a joke the whole thing really is. And a download chart won't be any different if it's based on sources like itunes and Napster.

PoNeigh
Will this expand to include other independent mp3 download sits such as bleep.com ??? There are many great artists on this site such as Bjork, Franz Ferdinand, Four tet, Sons and Daughters to name but a few... Sure we have to cover all download sites to show a true specturm of music in the uk?

Basil Rush
Surely having two charts risks devaluing the sales chart? The interesting thing is the most popular tune of the moment not the most popular tune obtained by a particular method ... surely?

Ian
Within 5 years people won't even remember the normal chart. Hopefully it won't be dominated by the R&B tripe Radio 1 peddle endlessly towards us from America - take a look at what kinds of music people chose in the 10 Hour Takeover to see what we really want to listen to.

Uk_h
Its a good move and will reflect the way the majority of people will purchase music in the future.

Peat
Sounds dumb to me.... a UK download chart? Only really makes sense if its a global download chart. What about all the other non-UK download sites that people use. (ie not the expensive ones like iTunes/Napster.)

Bob the builder
get real, hip hop and RnB are rubbish! we need more REAL bands

John
what's the point in this new chart? why not just combine it with the main chart? are we going to get a cassette, vinyl and CD chart too? besides, iTunes already have a live top 10 on their music store and, given that they are by far the biggest, what's the point in yest another chart?

Simon
The chart won't make any difference to my buying habits. I downlod from iTunes now but still buy a pile of CD's too. I still use P2P to investigate new stuff too.

nick pierce
if this means i can get more, UK hip hop and RnB without waitng for a us release in the States, than hell yea!!
