Adventures
of Pinocchio
Walkthrough
(IBM,
1996) |
Well, here's an unusual
and little known title based on the film Adventures of Pinocchio
starring Martin Landau, Genevieve Bujold, and a host of Jim Henson's
Creature Shop creatures. The movie was, apparently, universally panned
by the critics, so this does not bode well for a computer game based
on it. The game is an interactive movie of sorts with puzzles and
storyline forks that make it easily replayable. Interestingly, this
game had some footage from the film involving Rob Schneider, and this
game reminds me quite heavily of his experimental adventure game called
A Fork in the Tale. Even the locations were similar. So,
how does this game stack up? Well, as was the big thing in 1996, this
game is a monster on 4 CDs ("The Village", "The Forest",
"The Sea", and "Terra Magica") because of the
FMV, each disk representing a different world to explore for Pinocchio.
The game mirrors the movie's plot. The FMV fills a little under half
the screen (a way of decreasing the size of FMV) but this is somewhat
blocky, though I have to admit if I wasn't used to 2002 technology
for videos, I probably wouldn't have mentioned it. The videos are
quite clear enough to enjoy, but my faster CD-ROM player experienced
slowdowns as it was spinning up (this is pretty common with older
games which relied on CD-ROM for streaming). The game itself stars
Martin Landau and features a special appearance by Jonathan Taylor-Thomas
(reprising their roles from the film). The game is driven by plot
choices and puzzles that are made by clicking on the interface around
the FMV or on the FMV itself. The game allows for microphone input
also through voice recognition technology (I didn't test it but I
wonder how reliable it could be from 1996) that allows the user to
control the events on the screen through voice alone. Unfortunately,
this game only has one save game (you enter your name and it stores
everything you do under your "log on" name). Unlike other
games, though, this is VERY reliable. I had a game crash that did
not affect my save game at all. I just rebooted and continued where
I left off. I was very impressed (and relieved) because I have a fear
of losing everything with one save games. It has happened to me before!
Another unfortunate piece of programming was the requirement that
disk one must be inserted every time-more annoying than anything else.
There are two settings: Junior and Expert. If you are an adult, please
play on Expert. The hints in Junior take away any cerebral nature
of the tasks otherwise. Strangely, I experienced a memory error every
time I tried anything involving disk access (exiting or starting a
new game). The error read "MMSYTEM007 error" and told me
I didn't have enough memory, yet allowed me to continue without any
problems (I suspect this may relate to changes to WIN 98 code from
that in WIN 3.1 or WIN 95). The thing that most impressed me about
this game related to the collection of six passwords. Each of these
passwords reflected a lesson that Pinocchio learns. Involving a morality
of sorts makes this quite different to any other game I've played.
The game is chock full of different things to do in addition to the
quest element and every player's game will be a unique experience.
This is truly a game that can be recommended for the whole family.
NOTE: There are many paths
to the end solution. Although the key puzzles to receive the passwords
must be completed the same way, the rest of the game is a multitude
of possibilities. Don't be limited by my experience. Some puzzles
are random so you may need to find a different order to the solution
than what I have listed.
INTRODUCTION
You are met by Pugnacio Elocuzio P. Elegante, or Pepe for short, a
cricket that is the narrator and sometime hint-giver. Enter your name
to register your save game. You enter a movie theater showing Pinocchio.
THEATER
As you sit to watch, a girl character on the screen, Lumina, starts
to talk to you and jumps out of the movie into the theater. She is
joined shortly afterwards by a boy called Candlewick. Candlewick and
Lumina have different perspectives and outlooks. During the game you
will need to select them at different times to solve problems you
encounter. They ask you to select one of them at this point. Choose
Candlewick. You jump into the movie. Watch some scene-setting cutscenes:
Pinocchio has been kidnapped by Lorenzini and you must find him. You
end up on a country road.
ROAD
Lorenzini's coach suddenly turns up. Hide with Candlewick. Luckily,
you evaded Lorenzini. You depart for Gepetto's workshop.
WORKSHOP
You meet up with Lumina again and are introduced to Gepetto, Pinocchio's
father. He fills you in on recent events: Pinocchio was originally
made of wood, but turned into a real boy. Lorenzini kidnapped him
and turned him back into a puppet! He doesn't know where Pinocchio
went and advises you to talk with the puppets. They give you three
clues, but you have to construct the clue by putting what they say
in order:
· Clue one: 4
2 3 1. "You need six passwords."
· Clue two: 4 6 5 1 3 2. "Find the old man in the whale."
· Clue three: 2 6 5 4 3 1". "Look for a miracle
on a tree."
Exit through the left window
when Lorenzini turn up. You fall down and land in the theater.
THEATER
The theater is the place where you decide which world to visit next.
Select the image of Pinocchio dragging a rowboat into the sea. You
will be prompted to insert the SEA disk.
SEA
You land in the sea. Some pirates row past. Tell them that Pinocchio
was heading out to sea. You soon wash onto the beach.
BEACH
Elect to go with Lumina. Go up the beach. You now must select a type
of creature to become. Choose puppet. Start looking for a boat at
the right. You find the pirates buried up to their necks in sand.
Rescue them by digging them out. They are true to their nature and
take you prisoner. They throw you overboard and you are swallowed
by a whale.
WHALE
Lumina and Candlewick turn up shortly after you arrive in the belly
of the whale. Go straight ahead. You meet an old man. He tells you
a story about his father. Don't go to look outside. If you stay, he
will give you a password: ALBATROSS. The albatross at top of your
interface screen is now highlighted, showing that you have this password.
Candlewick returns and tells you that Lorenzini's men are outside.
How to get out? The old man tells you to tickle by jumping on the
fleshy, which will play a tune. He whistles the tune you need to play.
Counterclockwise from top left, click on 1 2 3 4 5. You are ejected
from the whale, to be promptly caught in a fisherman's net. You will
return to the beach. Elect to become a fish. Swim under the water.
UNDER THE SEA
Go left. You get the second password and the dolphin at the top of
the screen is highlighted. When you return to the beach, become a
bird and you'll return to the theater.
THEATER
This time select Pinocchio in the forest. You will be prompted for
the FOREST disk.
FOREST
Go with Candlewick. When prompted, become a puppet. Go to left. Enter
the monastery/church. Don't take the money given to the church. You
will find a gold coin. When the dodgy man suggests you plant it, don't!
You meet up with Lumina. Find the woodcutters by heading as far as
you can in any direction. You must respond truthfully to each of the
three woodcutter's questions. They will show you the way out. You
see a heart carved into a tree. This is the third password. The heart
on the tree icon is highlighted. You are caught by pirates but change
into a bird to escape. Fly west until you get shot at. Descend at
this point and you will return to the theater.
THEATER
Choose the red roofed village. You will be prompted for the VILLAGE
disk.
VILLAGE
You arrive in a less than comfortable jail cell.
CELL
Choose the puppet option when able. The jailer advises you not to
try to escape. Shortly afterward, Gepetto is put in jail too. He gives
you a key. Candlewick and Lumina call down to you from the window
above with plans. Choose Lumina's plan. Talk to the jailer to try
to build rapport. He refuses to let you out. He leaves to collect
the judge's verdict about your sentence. While he is gone, select
Candlewick's plan. Start telling lies to make your nose grow until
you hook the keys. Tell the truth to get your nose to return to normal
size with the keys. For telling the truth, you are given the fourth
password, TRUTH, and the lock is highlighted. You return to the theater.
THEATER
The next place to go is the image of the roller coaster. This will
prompt you for the TERRA MAGICA disk.
TERRA MAGICA
Strangely, on arrival Candlewick and Lumina's roles are reversed.
Go with Lumina. Aha, she was pretending! This place is anarchy. There
are no rules. Children are allowed to do whatever they want. Go to
the shooting gallery. Lorenzini's vases have been mixed in the town's.
Be sure to shoot only the vases with a piece of rope around the neck.
When complete, your deed is revealed. Well done-a blow against Lorenzini!
Go right. Click on the sign-it changes into the word FOLLOW, and the
flag icon is highlighted (password five). Go to the rollercoaster.
You are sent on a compulsory roller coaster ride.
ROLLERCOASTER
As you travel down the rollercoaster, pick up all the keys that fly
in front of you. Once you have all six, you arrive in a stable.
STABLE
You've been turned into jackasses! The only way out is a door locked
with locks of geometric shapes. Drag your keys you've collected to
the appropriate locks. When you've done all four, the door opens and
the final password is presented to you: HEART. The heart icon is highlighted.
You return to Terra Magica.
TERRA MAGICA
A woman appears and asks for the two passwords you collected here.
Click on the heart and sign. She tells you that you have followed
your heart and are ready to rescue Pinocchio. You return to the theater.
THEATER
Choose the castle image.
CASTLE
You meet a knight in the castle. She prompts you for the six passwords.
Each opens a successive door. When you have opened the last door,
you rescue Pinocchio. You row back to Gepetto. The game concludes
and you return to the theater.
THEATER
You watch the ending of the movie. Pinocchio becomes a boy again!
As the movie ends, you leave the theater and are greeted and congratulated
by the press. Outside the theater, you look back to see your name
in lights in the marquee as the star of the Pinocchio movie.
