Then just as the first breezes of summer start to blow, these musical accompaniments fade away. handa dashi festival Handa Spring Festivals 〔Kura〕 The stately presence of traditional buildings reminds us of the passing of time and the importance of using kura wisely and skillfully. Due to the favorable natural environment, brewing has flourished as an industry in the Handa area since the Edo period. The sea transport facilities that have been developed here since ancient times allowed the products of the Chita peninsula. such as sake(ricewine).vinegar and cotton,to be carried to the markets of Edo(old name of Tokyo)and O-saka. Lines of traditional kura(storehouses)can be seen along the Handa canal. These are used by manufacturers(most typically for warehousing brewery products)and are still actively used. in addition, the city is dotted with various other kinds of kura, such as kura attached to the old residents of merchants, kura attached to ordinary houses, and kura used to store festival floats. All of these are made using a black timber that is unique to this area. The presence of these storehouses adds great charm to the landscape. kura Mitsukan Museum of Vinegar This is the only comprehensive museum on vinegar in Japan, lt shows visitors all about the past and present of vinegar making, and conveys the spirit and technology of this industry, which has flourished continuously in the Handa area for almost 200 years.
