The City of Sao Paulo, through initiatives of both the Executive and Legislative powers, has already established 40 Sister City agreements. Among those, the oldest and one of the most successful ones, is that established with Milan in 1962 by Mayor Prestes Maia.
As diplomatic instruments, the Sister City agreements may provide exchange of knowledge on public policies and also on projects in different areas, such as health programs, AIDS prevention, against racial discrimination, cultural policies, among other possible collaboration. Most importantly, those agreements represent a formal base to facilitate agreements and exchange programs concerning development, public policies and services.
