A Listmania! list by Eagle Vision(Southeastern United States)
The list author says: "Golf GPS devices and laser rangefinders speed up game of play. Other golf GPS units allow you to keep track of statistics, your golf score, and your golf performance (Sureshot GPS and Sonocaddie V300).
Laser Rangefinders have improved recently with Pinseeker technology, whereby a steady hand is not as necessary. Laser Rangefinders also can include the slope (elevation of your target) but are not approved for tournament play.
There is great debate regarding rangefinders versus GPS units. The biggest factor is that rangefinders do not need memberships. Some GPS units utilize annual fees (Skycaddie) whereas some have one-time fees (Sonocaddie). Some are mapped by satellite images (Sureshot) whereas some are mapped by satellite with technicians also walking/plotting the course (Skycaddie). Only you can decide for yourself. However, before you buy a GPS, make sure the manufacturer has your golf club in the cache of mapped courses. Some companies will map courses by request (Sureshot) and others will map for a fee.
Here is a site that compares the features of the GPS systems: http://www.digicaddie.wlb1.com/gps_comparative_table.html
Rangefinders require a steady hand but Pinseeker technology greatly eliminates that need. Just keep in mind that slope is not USGA legal as of this writing.
Do yourself, or the golfer in your life, a favor and get one of these units."
"This does statistical tracking and keeps your score. You can track the green like Skycaddie. Has a one time lifetime fee option for US or US+World. This is my pick."
"This has a video preview of the hole, like they show on TV. There is a True Point feature where you can determine the distance from one spot to another on this unit.
It is not water resistant, however.
No annual fee but you pay credits for courses. $$$$"
