Art of Thewa
HIS MODESTY moves you, while his artistic abilities amaze you. Jagadish Lal Soni is a Thewa mastercraftsman. "In Rajasthani, silver and gold foil are referred to as `therna' while the process of giving shape to them is called `vaada'. So, Thewa is a combination of the two," explains Soni.
He has come all the way from Partapgarh (Rajasthan) for the CCI exhibition to showcase his creations and share his knowledge. "I have inherited this 500-year-old family heritage." Basically created on coloured glass, it is given a gold or silver covering depicting pictures of gods or royal scenes. Floral patterns are the latest craze, says Soni.
Winner of the 1977 National and the 2002 Shilpguru Award, he says it's the recognition by foreign tourists that has kept him going against all odds.
