The six-day exhibition of period furniture by Antiquity at the Vimonisha Gallery in the city reinvents the grandeur of a bygone era.

BE IT French Regency, Chippendale, Victorian or Oriental... the display of period furniture by Antiquity, which is on between 10.00 a.m. and 8.00 p.m., till September 14, at Vimonisha, 12, Khader Nawaz Khan Road in the city, showcases craftsmanship that bespeaks finesse. Antiquity is the result of Baseera Ahmed's love for creativity and her desire to design furniture of a rare grandeur.
Among the highlights of the exhibition-cum-sale, Antiquity's seventh in Chennai, are the pieces in mahogany. Baseera, who has carved a niche for herself as an expert in antique furniture, has explored the ancient Bengali art of chiselled work - "Batali." Though the possibilities of teak or rosewood have not been glossed over, Baseera prefers mahogany as it lends itself to "Batali."
The display, this time, is also a blend of east and west, traditional and contemporary, at the same time, preserving the grace and splendour of the past. The pieces have been carefully designed, moulding themselves to a modern lifestyle. The design aesthetics have been consciously preserved even in the upholstery, polish and the grain of wood. Priced Rs. 2500 upwards, the collection targets the discerning clientele of Chennai, especially those who respond to the magic of the past. The array includes the Gondola, George Jacob, Philadelphia Chippendale, English-French Hepplewhite and Peters chairs, consoles, Gothic and Louis XV tables, Georgian gilt wood chaise lounge and salon sofas. The Chippendale and Hepplewhite chairs are particularly eye-catching. So, for all those who wish to ensconce themselves in comfort, create a graceful ambience, or relive the past, the Antiquity sale is worth a visit. Each piece is sure to become a prized possession in the home it adorns.
