Mystery Case Files Evolving Out Of The Core Spotlight
11/26/2008 7:17:00 AM
Since 2005, Big Fish Games has forged a lucrative niche in the casual-games marketplace with a series of successful hidden-object games. In the beginning, with Mystery Case Files: Huntsville, players were tasked with finding lists of doodads tucked away in a crammed scene. There were a few puzzle elements back then, but the games were essentially computerized versions of the I Spy books.

Teamwork: Top Teams In Gaming History
11/25/2008 4:06:00 PM
Mario and Luigi are so cliché, although we admit that when you think of the top teams in gaming history, the plumber partners pop up first. But trust us, when it comes to the most dynamic, engaging, humorous or bizarre teams in gaming history, we hold high standards. Whether the teams below are bonded by a joint goal, for tactical purposes or in friendship, the games they inhabit wouldn’t be the same without the pairing or group of individuals.

Citing ESRB ratings policies (and enforcement), Dr. David Walsh, the president and founder of the organization, was positively gushing over the progress that’s been made over the past few years. As part of that success, the group is spending more of its attention on parental responsibilities, which it hopes to help with continued education and information on what types of games are available and which are suitable for children.

Today an update to version 2.52 is now available, which adds one little feature that a few users will probably love. Now, the in-game Web browser allows PS3 users to view Flash content in a full-screen mode. Sure, it’s not exactly a groundbreaking update, but 1) full screen is good, especially if you plan on watching a lot of videos and 2) it’s free.

Super Hyper Weekly Roundup Turbo Edition HD Megamix 11/24
11/24/2008 10:56:00 AM
One of this week's standout releases is the downloadable HD remake of Street Fighter II Turbo--and not just because the rest of the landscape is a little barren. PlayStation 3 owners even get it a day earlier than their 360-backing counterparts, thanks to the switch from this week's store update to Tuesday rather than the traditional Thursday (thank Thanksgiving!). Another thing worth noting this week is the pair of competing DLC packs featuring the band the Killers. Both Guitar Hero World Tour and Rock Band have three-track packs available for download, with one song, Mr. Brightside, appearing in both bundles. This kind of overlapping content is only going to force people who have invested in both games into making some tough decisions. Hooray.

When you finish the swim, you feel good about yourself, and you carry on the rest of your life, perhaps swimming every so often for leisure. That’s what most people would do, anyway.

Square Enix Counting Down To New Bahamut Lagoon?
11/12/2008 1:00:00 PM

Square Enix has put up another one of their countdown websites. This time it features a very cool looking piece of art with one of our favorite dragons. It also features a mysterious colossus at the bottom (see below). Could this be a new Bahamut Lagoon title? The first was a beloved Super Nintendo Tactical RPG. There’s some speculation on the internet that this is not a new Bahamut game but something Final Fantasy related. But we’re still leaning Bahamut because of a subtle clue on the website. The favicon, the icon used for bookmarks, shows a 16-bit image of what could be Byuu, the original game’s young hero. Since all we have to go on is art, we’ll keep you posted if more details pop-up soon.

Update: According to Japan's Jump Magazine, the game is indeed a new Bahamut. It's a DS game that's being called Blood of Bahamut, and it appears to feature 2D sprite characters in 3D environments.

But the truth is – whether many of us are aware or not – that games are not only changing the entertainment industry but the business world as well.

Sega Brings Over Forty Genesis Games In One
11/7/2008 1:45:00 PM

Sega Corporation today announced Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection developed by Backbone Entertainment for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The over-40-game compilation will feature some of the most widely regarded first-party games from Sega’s 16-bit Genesis as well as bonus content from its 8-bit Master System and 1980’s arcade games library, all in 720p for HD televisions.

“Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection is a must-have for any diehard Sega fan,” says Sean Ratcliffe, Vice President of marketing for Sega of America, Inc.  “Fans have been chomping at the bit to get a chance to relive fond memories from these classic games, that time has come and it’s being presented this time in HD.”

Featured games include Sonic the Hedgehog 1, 2, and 3, Ecco the Dolphin, Shinobi III, and Streets of Rage.

Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection is scheduled for release in Spring 2009.  But why no release on Wii? Perhaps because some of the more highly acclaimed games already exist on Nintendo’s Virtual Console. Still, over 40 games on one disc in HD is pretty sweet.

Citing sources “close to the Canadian developer,” Eurogamer is reporting that Capcom has tapped the Vancouver-based company and that “there is something amazing being built here at Blue Castle behind locked doors.”

Capcom isn’t officially commenting on the existence of such a project at this time. It shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone if it turns out to be true, however, seeing that the first one was one of the earliest hits for the Xbox 360 and Capcom.

Atari Pulls Ghostbusters Out Of Limbo
11/7/2008 10:42:00 AM
Ghostbusters seemed like a sure thing for Sierra Vivendi when it was announced it last year. Ghostbusters: The Video Game featured the writing and voice talents from most of the original film’s cast, with Dan Akyroyd calling it an unofficial Ghostbusters 3. Unfortunately, it was one of the casualties from the Activision Blizzard acquisition, and its future became hazy.

Well, Atari has come to save the day. The company announced today that it will be publishing Ghostbusters, which is on schedule for a 2009 release. That’s a bit later than its original Halloween 2008 date, but it coincides with the 25th anniversary of the first flick. Has it really been that long? Ouch.

Bethesda Softworks today announced that it’s shipped more than 4.7 million copies of Fallout 3 worldwide since the game launched last week. Of course, there’s a difference between shipping games to retailers and moving those games into customers’ hands, but it’s probably a safe bet to assume that people are buying it, too. We’ll just have to wait a bit to learn exactly how many.

11/4/2008 5:24:00 PM

Electronic Arts announced today that the open beta for the Phenomic developed BattleForge on PC will begin on November 7. Gamers can register for the open beta at www.battleforgecardhunt.com. In North America, those who’ve pre-ordered the real-time strategy game from participating retail partners are guaranteed access into the beta.

In BattleForge, players use virtual trading cards to assemble armies, lay buildings, and cast spells to destroy enemies. The unique card system gameplay enables you to combine and customize army factions to your liking, and gone from most RTS’s is base building and production queues, which is sure to make this one of the faster paced games in its genre.

BattleForge also features a slew of online features, including 12 player wars and cooperative missions. BattleForge will ship in early 2009, and after three years in development, it should be worth a look.

Microsoft Unveils Boku, A Tool To Create Games
11/4/2008 5:22:00 PM

According to Gamasutra, this week at its Professional Developers Conference in Los Angeles, Microsoft Research revealed Boku, a PC and Xbox 360 tool that lets users create their own games using only an Xbox 360 controller.

The “visual programming language…is designed to be accessible for children and enjoyable for anyone,” Microsoft Research states on its website. “Boku can express advanced game design concepts in a simple, direct, and intuitive manner.”

The tool appears to be even simpler than XNA, a toolset provided by Microsoft that already facilitates computer game development and management. In fact, Boku was created using XNA.

The programming language is entirely icon-based, and programs are expressed in physical terms, such as vision, hearing, and time. It features a terrain editor, path builder, 20 different characters with different abilities, and a built-in user sharing and rating system.

Although it has not been announced how the project will be delivered to users, Microsoft has announced Boku will have some form of trial in 2009. Some already dubbed it the “Little Big Planet Killer.” Until more is known, that may be jumping the gun.

Curt Schilling added former Electronic Arts audio composer Aubrey Hodges and Blizzard Entertainment’s user-interface designer Irena Pereira to 38 Studios, a development studio the pitching ace created in 2006.

Aubrey Hodges is credited as among the first to use MIDI in a videogame. His work has spanned a number of games, including Doom, Quake, King’s Quest, NFL Blitz, and Madden NFL. Irena Pereira worked on the interface design and development for World of Warcraft and its expansions The Burning Crusade and Wrath of the Lich King.

38 Studios is currently developing a MMORPG under the name Copernicus. And if Schilling’s studio continues to draft as well as they have so far, the game could be an All Star itself.
