Herm EdwardsRegular Season: 54-71 Postseason: 2-4 Experience: 6 Career record: 56-75 Pro Career: Herm Edwards was hired as the 10th head coach in Chiefs franchise history on Jan. 9, 2006. He enters his sixth year as an NFL head coach and his 27th season in the league as either a player, a scout, or coach. He began his pro coaching career as a participant in the NFL's Minority Coaching Fellowship program with Kansas City in 1989 and is the first graduate of the program to go on to become the head coach of the franchise for which he served his fellowship. He rejoins the Chiefs after spending six seasons with Kansas City as a scout (1990-91), defensive backs coach (1992-94) and pro personnel scout (1995). During his tenure as Kansas City's defensive backs coach, Edwards oversaw a Chiefs secondary that helped the club force a league-high 115 turnovers from 1992-94. Edwards joined Tony Dungy's staff in Tampa Bay as assistant head coach/defensive backs coach, spending five seasons (1996-2000) in that capacity. Edwards then enjoyed a five-year stint as the head coach of the N.Y. Jets (2001-05). He led the Jets to 41 wins, equalling the third-highest victory total in that franchise's history. He was on the sideline for a Jets-best five postseason games. Edwards originally entered the NFL as a rookie free agent with Philadelphia in 1977 and went on to start 135 consecutive regular season contests at cornerback, producing a franchise-record 38 combined interceptions in regular and postseason action. He also played in Super Bowl XV. He concluded his career with the L.A. Rams and Atlanta in 1986. Career record: 41-44. Background: Edwards played cornerback collegiately for California (1972, 1974), Monterey Peninsula (Calif.) J.C. (1973), and San Diego State (1976). He played 10 NFL seasons with Philadelphia (1977-85), the L.A. Rams (1986) and Atlanta Falcons (1986). Collegiately, he was the defensive backs coach at San Jose State (1987-89).
