Miley Knows Best

Between sold-out concerts, multi-platinum records, and a hit TV series, Hannah Montana star Miley Cyrus has some serious business riding on her 15-year-old shoulders—not to mention paparazzi on her tail and tabloid editors praying for her to pull a Britney. So how’d she get so (relatively) normal? Bruce Handy journeys to deepest Toluca Lake to find out.

Miley01Miley Cyrus and her father, Billy Ray Cyrus, photographed in Calabasas, California. Their easy on-screen rapport is a key part of Hannah Montana’s success. Photographs by Annie Leibovitz.

It’s my favorite show! I love it!” says 15-year-old Miley Cyrus, speaking of Sex and the City over spinach-artichoke dip in a dingy Toluca Lake restaurant that for some reason, possibly native to the San Fernando Valley, is divided between cheerful families enjoying Saturday lunches and a glum row of barflies passing time by watching I-don’t-know-what on ESPN Classic. The restaurant was Cyrus’s choice. She loves the dip and the turkey-melt sandwich. She’s here with her mother, Tish, her eight-year-old sister, Noah, and somewhere between a dozen and two dozen paparazzi, who followed the Cyruses from their nearby home and are now waiting for Miley in the restaurant’s parking lot. Noah, curiously, looks like Dakota Fanning.

But back to Sex and the City. Miley says her Disney Channel sitcom, Hannah Montana, in which she plays a schoolgirl with a secret life as a rock star, is patterned in part after the former HBO series about women looking for love and hookups in Manhattan. “Obviously not the scenarios,” she explains quickly. “But if you watch Sex and the City, like the way the friends are, the way that it’s dry and they all have distinct characters—that’s a thing we try to do on our show.”

She’s earnest and sincere about her work—distinct characters are a good thing—and it’s always nice to see a young star give a shout-out to her forebears. (She’s also an I Love Lucy fan.) That said, I can’t imagine that her minders at the Walt Disney Company want to see Miley Cyrus’s name anywhere near the word “sex,” not in an era when every under-age actress in Hollywood is stalked by the Ghost of Britney Future. And not when so much money is riding on this one’s continued public innocence. Condé Nast Portfolio magazine recently estimated that Cyrus is “on track” to be worth $1 billion by the time she’s 18. I’m guessing that seriously overestimates her personal cut of the Hannah Montana pie. Still, she might very well be the biggest child star since Shirley Temple, give or take a couple of Macaulay Culkin movies, or an Olsen twin. Certainly she’s the biggest since Lindsay Lohan earned the right to vote and go to war.

Twelve-year-old Abigail Breslin might have an Oscar nomination, but Cyrus has stats. Hannah Montana is the Disney Channel’s current crown jewel: its ratings for its target audience, kids ages 6 to 14, are second only to American Idol’s. Cyrus also has two multi-platinum records to her name (well, one to Hannah’s name and one, a double album, co-credited to Hannah and Miley) and is the youngest performer to have two No. 1 albums within 12 months. Her recent concert tour sold out 70 dates across North America and caused an uproar when tickets started being scalped for thousands of dollars, in some cases. (Try getting that for your spare High School Musical: The Ice Tour ticket.) The subsequent cash-in film, Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert, released in 3-D, set several records, including highest-grossing release on a Super Bowl weekend ($31.1 million) and highest per-screen average ever ($45,561); those numbers are either because of or despite the fact that tickets to Cyrus’s film were sold at the inflated price of $15, on average.

Oh, and you can also buy Hannah Montana sheets and MP3 players and all kinds of junk.

Her success isn’t a fluke. Cyrus is cute, but not too cute, and she sings with more character than most pop stars her age—you could imagine her voice, with its natural husk and its twang from her native Tennessee, turning into Lucinda Williams’s someday, if she plays her cards right. (Maybe.) And thanks to her comic timing and easy rapport with her dad, the country-music star Billy Ray Cyrus, who plays her father on TV, Hannah Montana is on occasion actually kind of funny, at least in comparison with That’s So Raven or The Suite Life of Zack & Cody. Or The Brady Bunch, for that matter.

The series premiered in March 2006, was an instant hit, and what with everything else going on, Cyrus says, she hasn’t had more than a day off since Christmas 2006 and doesn’t expect to get another break until at least this Christmas. She hasn’t been in regular school since the sixth grade; she’s in 10th grade now, tutored on set or on the road for three hours a day. At least she doesn’t have homework. (And come to think of it, if you add time spent on homework, my grade-school kids slog through longer days than the maximum eight hours of work and school that tween performers are allotted by state law in California.) Cyrus says she loves what she does, but there are drawbacks. “I miss the social part, for sure,” she says of traditional brick-and-mortar schooling. She makes friends at her dance classes.

Today she’s wearing a pale-yellow, vaguely peasant-y T-shirt blouse, a pair of expensive-looking jeans, and chipped black nail polish. She talks fast and efficiently, like Rosalind Russell in His Girl Friday; maybe this is a by-product of growing up around agents. (Cyrus has been acting professionally since the age of eight, when she talked her way into a recurring part on Doc, an earlier show of her father’s.) And yet her appeal as Hannah Montana, and as Hannah’s alter ego on the show, Miley Stewart, is that she presents as a grounded, relatively normal kid; show business hasn’t turned Miley Stewart’s head, made her into a diva—it’s more like a kick, another fun thing for a kid to do after school, like being good at soccer or art, but much cooler. Cyrus projects that unaffectedness in real life as well. She also seems to have very clear ideas about things. In fact, her focus and self-possession can be a bit scary. Are 15-year-olds supposed to feel comfortable in their own skin?

I ask a dumb question—I’m sorry, it’s hard to interview a teenager; they’re intimidating—about whose career trajectory she’d like to follow. Her answer is a deft amalgam of showbiz savvy and girl-power mantra: “Before, I’d say like Hilary Duff”—the star of Disney’s Lizzie McGuire—“or this person or that person. But there can’t be a thousand Hilary Duffs. Then that doesn’t make Hilary special. And there can’t be a thousand Miley Cyruses, or that doesn’t make me special. That’s what a star is: they’re different. A celebrity is different. So, no, mostly I want to make my own path.”

Miley02Um, was Cyrus—or Disney—at all anxious about this shot? “No, I mean I had a big blanket on. And I thought, This looks pretty, and really natural. I think it’s really artsy.”

It was the frenzy surrounding the concert tour last fall and winter that brought her to adult consciousness. The frenzy also brought increased media attention, and the paparazzi camped out round the clock in front of the Cyrus family’s gated home. “Sometimes there’ll be like 40,” Miley says. “Sometimes 20, sometimes 30. Sometimes two. I’ll stop and I’ll do the picture. It’s really funny. They’ll buy our dinner and whatever. We’ve become friends.” Still, it can’t be easy to be under constant scrutiny at an age when most kids have a hard enough time dealing with mirrors, but Cyrus shrugs it off.

“The good thing about Miley is just last week the paparazzi shot her scarfing down French fries and they had that in every magazine, and she’s really great about that,” her mom calls out from a nearby table, where she and Noah are cooling their heels. (It’s as if they’ve dropped Miley off for soccer practice.) “She just laughs about it,” Tish continues.

“I like French fries,” says Miley.

Before I met Cyrus, an editor at a tabloid told me that all the celebrity weeklies have been ratcheting up their focus on her. With Lindsay Lohan rehabbed and Britney Spears under psychiatric care, the tabs are looking to Cyrus to flame out, or at least do something mildly outrageous. In December, some pictures made it onto the Net showing Cyrus and a girlfriend sharing what looks like a Twizzler and almost kissing, prompting a brief, halfhearted spate of “lezzie” rumors. Silly. But still, I ask, did she feel betrayed that someone, presumably a friend, had posted the pictures?

“It was me,” she says, “on my MySpace. For me, I was like, That’s two girls—it’s not a big deal. But they got spread around. Like someone copied and pasted and said, Omigod, look at this, and blah blah blah. I was just like it didn’t affect me. Everyone’s like, Maybe she’ll learn her lesson this time. Nope.” If she had been chewing gum, this could have been nicely underscored with a snap.

But doesn’t she ever feel enormous pressure, what with a supposedly billion-dollar business resting on her shoulders? And, come on, it’s Disney. Doesn’t she have to watch herself constantly?

“Not really. That’s what my parents are for. They’re there to take care of that, and I can just do what I love.”

But what if she wants to get shitfaced sometime, or pregnant? Actually, I don’t ask that. But I do ask if the “people around you” worry about the Spears-Lohan precedent.

“No, cuz I mean—everyone has their time. And I think most 21- to 25-year-olds go through this kind of thing. It’s just not on a platform—you know what I mean? Basically, they’re being normal 21-year-olds, especially Lindsay. I mean, most of that’s pretty normal. If you went to most high schools, I could point out Britneys and Lindsays.” She could point out the real ones too: she knows both and says they talk from time to time, which is another thing that I can’t imagine her minders at Disney want to hear. “Yeah,” she continues. “I guess that’s why I’m so adamant about the Britneys and Lindsays and whatever, because I know those people and I know they have good hearts and they’re struggling.”

You seem so well adjusted, I say, which is probably the worst thing an adult can tell a 15-year-old.

“That’s just my personality. I don’t get shaken or stirred up over anything. Which can be a problem sometimes. I’m just, like, so no emotions. I just don’t let things faze me. I’m very much like my dad. My dad’s like this.” True, it must be useful to have a father who weathered ridicule for both “Achy Breaky Heart,” his 1992 hit, and his mullet haircut of the same period.

The real question is: How do you grow up in public, both as a person and as a commodity? For every Jodie Foster or Brooke Shields there are a dozen Gary Colemans. Michael Jackson’s face speaks volumes. So did Judy Garland’s medicine cabinet. In Cyrus’s case, there has been a concerted effort, on the commodity side, to slowly draw her out from under Hannah’s shadow. A full Miley album will be released this summer and a Hannah Montana feature film, to be shot in Nashville, will mostly focus on “the Miley side of life,” as she puts it. And though the pose was Annie Leibovitz’s idea, the topless but demure portrait accompanying this article could be seen as another baby step, as it were, toward a more mature profile. “I think it’s really artsy,” Cyrus says. “It wasn’t in a skanky way.… And you can’t say no to Annie. She’s so cute. She gets this puppy-dog look and you’re like, O.K.

It’s time to go. A couple of creeps have materialized at the back of the restaurant with a stack of glossy photos they want Cyrus to sign, presumably destined for eBay, but she grants them several swipes of a proffered pen. Outside, in the parking lot, the paparazzi start snapping away. Cyrus strikes a few poses, flashing a peace sign, obliging someone else with an over-the-shoulder smile. Suddenly, in the glare of both sun and flash, she doesn’t look at all like a kid but rather a well-drilled pro hitting her marks, which, obviously, is what she is.

The Cyruses get into their S.U.V. and drive away, headed to a recording studio. The paparazzi pile into their cars for the chase. I ask one how great a meal ticket Miley is, really.

“She’s not Britney,” he says, “but she’s up there.”

I can't believe her parents are on the set and allowing these pictures. You wouldn't even know that's of her and her Dad,disgusting. So,they let her photograph naked with a sheet, what's next,Playboy?Pics like that are considered child pornography on the internet. She's suppose to be a role model for young girls???

Posted 04/28/2008 by winterroses2

Well, I hope Miley doesn't go the way of Lindsay Lohan. I was shocked to see Lohan's "truly" topless (with nipples and all showing) in the recent issue. What is Hollywood coming to? These magazines are available to anyone, especially teens, who start to think this is all fine! Most adults don't even "know" about the Lohan photos; I only saw it while waiting at the beauty shop! Where are the parents, I ask sadly? Lohan's have surely failed her. I truly pray Billy hasn't failed Miley.

Posted 04/28/2008 by Carol1

Her choices seem reflect those of someone who is surrounded by older individuals who encourage her to do what she wants. She is in between the Disney age and MTV and she is obviously wanting to grow up. Someone needs to remind her of the line NOT to cross and help her to keep herself on track. Annie should be ashamed of herself for the pictures, she took advantage of a situation and she should have known better. You too Billy Ray!!! God Bless you Miley !!!

Posted 04/28/2008 by SharoneLea

I agree, it is a good picture of Miley, but do you think there was any hint of you possibly posting this picture and trying to take advantage of her in any way... taint her name at all and say she is just like the rest??? Why can't people leave well enough alone and let a good kid BE a good kid...

Posted 04/28/2008 by pamcrt

I really think people are overreacting. She is not naked, she is not even showing that much. It is art people! What is the difference between this photo and a young lady wearing a backless prom dress? You can see worse than this at any museum or art fair in the United States.

Happy 5th Birthday Adyson Lea (Houston, Tx) , a very BIG Miley Cyrus fan. Remember these children look up to you, keep it real for the little ones who admire you.

Miley look like a vampire here not 15 year old. Red lipstick, bare back dark eyeshadow? What is the message here? The photos of her and her dad are un-natural. I would never, at 15, be hanging out with my dad like that, weird. Another exploited teen getting used by parents not thinking straight.

Posted 04/28/2008 by roxcheyenne

Yeah! I'm tired of women expressing themselves! Only men should be able to get away with this. I'm going to complain about this to encourage women to feel insecure and to stop conveying passion or personality. That way the double standard shall remain intact. Now I will insinuate that she is going downhill and make her feel even more embarrassed about this. I have so much spare time. I love being misogynist.

I think the photo of Miley is beautiful and no one would be upset if she had a bathing suit on that showed her off her back. It seems as if Mily has a great head on her shoulders and parents that love her, guide her and don't use her for personal gain. I think people should get their heads out of the gutter and see the photo for the beautiful piece of art that it is meant to reflect.

Lets get real, Vanity Fair is know for their sexy photo. The Olsen twins came out in Vanity fair with secy photos as well, at least they were older... I agree this boarders child ponography, it is soft porn no matter how you look at it. Cyrus is a role model weather its what she wants or not. My 14 year old daughter and I were watching our local morning news program and there were the pictures, my daughter was very upset that Cyrus didnt live up to "Christian" spoutings, she thought Cyrus was different from te others. I guess there is a price for everything even your 15 year old virtue. Sorry Billy Ray but this was a very bad decision and I dont beleive anyone is any the sorrier for having Miley get all this publicity, like they say even bad publicity still keeps here in the publics eye.

As a parent of an 11 year old girl who is all into Miley and the Hanna Montana show, I can say that I knew this was going to come sooner then later. I had mentioned to my daughter this morning that "I was right" when I told her that Miley was not going to stay innocent as she portrays. You see my daughter is all about Miley, just as she was with Hilary Duff and so on, but nope she doubted mothers instict. So here we find yet another naked tean posing. Lindsey was one, Vanessa Hudgins and her full body naked pictures, Britney and the list goes one. We have not only Hollywood to blame but the parents also. My daughter too works in the entertainment business, recently filmed a movie with Eva Longoria, but NEVER would I allow someone, let alone the Hollywood what's in crowd to sway my child to pose naked, half, full or what ever. Shame on Billy, his wife and the photographer. It's not easy to sway the wrong way, but tuff parents, like myself don't allow b.s. like this. I am truly disappointed in Miley

Isn't there other things to worry about out there than a 15 yr old getting a glamour shot? Like maybe the environment or how the economy is these days and how soldiers are dying to help protect us everyday? Yeah, Miley is a role model but what 6-14 yr old kid looks at Vanity Fair? Are you the parent going to go out and buy the magazine and show your kids? Miley shouldn't have to apologize for getting pictures taken. I think most young girls her age would love to pose for professional pictures. Maybe these pictures and the article would inspire young kids that they can reach to stars and can do anything in life. I think some people should just calm down and worry about other things that would effect your life and your childrens than a 15 yr old successful girl who has done nothing wrong....

Posted 04/28/2008 by messedup500

How AWFUL. I do NOT want my daughter to see these pics. This young girl, notice I said "girl" not "woman"... has so many young fans, she should know better than to pose like this. Shame on her parents for allowing this, they should ALL feel ashamed.I will be de-mileying my household as of now.

Vanity Fair is exploiting a minor. I am an art photographer who takes artistic nude and semi-nude photographs. All my subjects are at least 18 years of age, have presented me with a photo id and signed a model release. I have NEVER taken or have even thought about taking an exploitive photograph of a child in my over 20 year career. I have been shooting for over 20 years and have respected the photography of Annie Leibovitz as long as I can remember, but I think her notoriety has affected her judgment. This photograph of Miley Cyrus is in very poor taste because of the child's age. If any other photographer would have photographed a 15 year old in this manner they would be out of business in minutes and probably brought up on child pornography charges. But since she is the photographer to the stars she can get away with this. I do believe the image is artistic in nature but it is lacking any good judgment. Both Leibovitz and Vanity Fair are exploiting this young girl for money pure and simple. To say that it was shot digital and her handlers were on the set is their way of saying, she could have said No. But if you say no to Vanity Fair or Annie Leibovitz, you better kiss your career goodbye. I am ashamed that they stooped as low as this and hope the young lady's reputation isn't ruined because of a photographer's ego.

Posted 04/28/2008 by baronephotoart

It's really sad that you can't find a decent role model for your little girl anymore. They've all been exploited by fame & fortune. All I can say is that my daughter will no longer be watching/reading/anything Miley anymore. There's no room for compromise in this world. If you don't protect your children, this world will chew them up and spit them out.

Posted 04/28/2008 by mattchristina

What kind of parents are this? "The best of both worlds" can end up worse than Britney. They are comparing sweet Hannah with Britney. "She is not there yet". What a exploitation! Why in the world they let manipulate this young girl to get naked photos? This is chile abuse!! com'on! What are these american parents thinking? This is disgusting, outrageous! You name it! I won't let my child watch her show anymore. She is going to think is 'okay' to be naked and show her body publicly, but because my daughter has parents who knows where is the line between decency and undecency. Well, I forgot that Hannah and her parents only wants more money! That is right! Exploit your child, keep doing it until you will ruin her own life for her own parents wrong decision!

The pictures of Billy Rae and Miley are on the verge of incestual. I never would have posed with my father like that. What is happening to our youth and why are they not happy staying the age they are and in the sexual realm that they belong? Shame on Billy Rae and Miley's mom - - what were you thinking?

Posted 04/28/2008 by sandy

I can't believe how the magazine manipulated a 15 year old girl. Annie Leibovitz, who is suppose to be the " IT " photographer is old enough to know better that the pic is NOT appropiate but she manipulated the poor girl telling her that it would be an artistic photo. Now everyone wants to judge a 15 year old girl for trusting the well know photographer. I for one will NEVER buy another Vanity Fair magazine because this goes to show they have NO morals. Another thing is people have to stop putting so much pressure on these teen stars to be a perfect role model. Parents need to take responsability and be the role model in their childs life. No one is perfect ! The problem is everyone wants to focus on every mistake These teen stars make but you never hear about all the positive things they do. Miley, I think you are so sweet and down to earth. Keep on smiling!!

If My daughter was a actreess, I dont' care if she poses like that because it makes her more famous, that is why her parents are not stoping nothing, that is why they are letting her daughter pose whatever she wants because of the money

Posted 04/28/2008 by latinagirl

I think she is beautiful. Because she has the allure (look) in the picture is why it seems more x-rated then G-rated. She looks like a sensual and strong woman. The picture does not define who she is. The public does not define her!!!!!! Only she defines herself. I ask the public to not turn her into another Brittney allow her to love herself and her beauty GIVE THE GIRL HER SPACE. she is not raising your kids thats your job you don't like then don't look.

Posted 04/28/2008 by kymmcghee

First and foremost does anyone know what the nave of this magazine is? Last time I checked it was not Teen Beat or something that has teens in mind. This is a FASHION magazine. Let me repeat myself FASHION. Yes she may be only 15 but trust me in this day an age 15 year olds have seen and done worse. She is not nude any way. She has a blanket over. These pictures are for people who read and are into fashion not for people who are in need of a role model for their children. Wake up America and stop trying to force other people to be your childrens role model. The only people your kids should be looking up to are the people they call MOMMY and DADDY!

Posted 04/28/2008 by JAYHAWK1976

All the responsibility should be placed on her parents. She is a 15-year-old CHILD. Her parents claim to be Christian and should have, from the start, said no to any photos without clothing. In this day and age everyone automatically implies sexual thoughts and ideas when someone is photographed without clothes even if it is done in the name of "art." If Miley is to remain the role model she is and wants to be, her parents must be a strong guiding force in her life.

Posted 04/28/2008 by DariaDoll

With all due respect to the people that think a bar back is way to sexual....get a life. I think the picture is very artistic. If you read the caption, she said she was enrobed; not naked. Only imagination is making her nude!!

I have to wonder how many of the comments above are from regular Vanity Fair readers- they seem awfully puritanical.

Yes Miley is a role model for teens and younger kids. But how many teens & younger kids read Vanity Fair? I can assure you that my 6 & 8 year old daughters know who Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus is - but have never even heard of the magazine. (No offense intended to VF.) Its the parents who are making a big deal out of this, and if Miley's parents were ok with the shoot - then what does it matter what anyone else thinks?

Posted 04/28/2008 by Staci

Pfffft .... who frickin cares? I hope she shows more skin in the next photo shoot. Kidding, but seriously, if parents are up in arms about this, how do they get their children though day to day American life? I believe she is still just as innocent as a "normal" attractive 15 yr old woman can be. No harm done here...and how dare people criticize the way she poses with her father! Who are the sick ones here???

This is disgusting. Vanity Fair has just lowered themselves to one step up from child porn. They should be ashamed of themselves and I will never look at them in the same light. This is a 15 year old girl, not an adult and the fact that you abused her like this is gross. No, the PARENTS should not have allowed this either but the magazine and photographer were the ones who set it up and are ultimately to blame. Leibovitz's photography reputation does not give her permission to start shooting child porn. The editors who allowed this should be ashamed. What a bunch of nice adults that undressed a young girl and took half naked pictures of her! Yeah, sure, that's art.

Posted 04/28/2008 by tjunot

I cannot believe the press this has gotten. I am a parent, and I do not see this as verging on porn in any way. I wouldn't have let my daughter do something like that, but my daughter is not on television and we're not living off her income either. Annie L. is as professional as they come. She doesn't need to exploit a child for money. I don't believe for one second that she was "tricked" into this. Her parents were there. It's ony because of the ridiculous amount of controversy this is getting that they're feeling the need to pass the buck. She's their meal ticket, they're not going to throw her or themselves under the buck by supporting them if her fans are threatening to turn their backs on Miley. Heaven forbid! However, I don't really see the parents acting much different than the parents in my own neighborhood. You know, the ones that allow their daughters to leave the house with skin tight jeans, padded bras, and slogans written across their butts. The only difference is that they're letting their daughters advertise their "goods" for free.

I feel Miley and her family have made a bad choice. She is seen by so many young boys and girls. It is not wise of her to be showing herself in this way. I would not let my children look at these photos. And yes, most children do not read Vanity Fair but, they will not have any problem seeing these photos splashed all over the TV. If she wanted to do this kind of photo she should of waited until she was off the Disney channel and at least 18 years old. I wonder what will happen to her career now?

I have a daughter older than her, Miley, and I have to say that the pictures I have seen are in good taste and all the uproom is because she is today's Hot thing going in the entertainment industry. It is nothing different than going to Glamour Shots for some "make the young girl look older". Miley, do not listen to all this stuff, people will forget this by next week. And people get off your "High Horse" and live your own life.

Posted 04/28/2008 by DodgeCharger2561

I agree that these photographs are not a big deal. A 15 year old's back is nothing to get upset about. Neither are nipples (see comment above about Lohan). We all have them. If you don't want your children seeing such things, isn't it easy enough to control what the minor in your house sees and does not see? In general it is a good thing to protect one's child from some of the harsh realities of the world, like murder, rape, abuse, starvation, etc. But I guarantee that more damage/exposure will come from leaving on the evening news, than running across a "racy" photo of a 15 yr old pop star. Maybe if all this energy was spent explaining to our children how 25,000 die from starvation every day (according to the UN) and what small things we (even kids!) can do to help, rather than protesting inconsequential matters such as Miley Cyrus and her skin exposure, we could do something productive in this country. Let's educate our children so they can do a better job in this world than we did!

Speaking of role models: perhaps if the puritanical posters on this message board would learn proper grammar and spelling, their children might have a chance of doing the same.

I think the picture of her with her back showing is just beautiful. I am sorry she feels ashamed of it (per CNN.com article today) - it is artistic and lovely. I hope she is proud of it 15 years from now. I much rather have my 15yo photographed like that than in a tiny bikini which shows far more. I will say though, the photo of her and her dad - it's a bit odd. I'm surprised that one isn't creating all the fuss.

Posted 04/28/2008 by laragc

I think everyone should just chill, Miley did the pictures in good taste, like someone else said it is like wearing a backless dress. More people show more skin when they are even wearing swim suits.

I think this is insane! Everyone has had high hopes for Miley to be different. The difference between her and Lindsey is Lindsey is 22! Miley is 15! I coach girls of this age and this what I try to teach them not to do! I am very angry at everyone that let this happen. The adults are completely at fault here so is vanity fair! What were you guys thinking?? Everyone has lost their minds. I would have a problem if it was a 15 yr old in an art museum to or if she had been in her swim suit. In response to the prom dress the ones who are allowed to go to prom are at least 17 big difference in age! Let her be a kid because that is exaclty what she is!

Everyone, please read the comment by the Barone Art Photographer who says his company would never take any such photographs of a child of 15, parental or no parental approval. He also says the photographer should be arrested, take note, Miss Liebovitz. And I hope all of you who are referring to the photos see ALL of them, not just the one.

You know what? I'm going to send an email to the California Attorney General to ask them to look into filing charges against VAnity Fair for fraud, and child exploitation. Hope this doesn't put a dent in Vanity Fair's upcoming new revenue stream: NUDE TEENAGERS!! COME SEE THE NUDE TEENAGERS!!! STEP RIGHT UP, FOR THE PRICE OF A MAGAZINE THEY WILL PHOTOGRAPH NUDE TEENS!!! PLANNING ON GOING TO FULL FRONTAL NUDITY SOON!!! NAKED TEENS! SEE THEM HERE!!!

Posted 04/28/2008 by justaguy

I'm sorry. I don't see the photo of her wrapped in a blanket as being risque or negative. She's covered more in this than in a swimsuit, and had they published photos of her in a swimsuit, nobody would have thought anything of it. Yes, I see it as artistic and I have no problem with it. It's not as if she was in a provocative pose. I don't see this as any more sexual in nature than the naked newborn asleep on dad's arm portraits that are popular and considered "oh so sweet." Now, the one of her and her dad is a little creepy. I understand she may very well be "daddy's little girl." That's fine and there's nothing wrong with them being photographed together, but at least make it clear that they are father/daughter. Someone looking at this photo of the two of them together who did not know they were father/daughter could easily think there was a more mature relationship between the two.

all of you a*holes who say miley and her father look more like lovers need to take a step back and think about what your saying, she made mistake okay like no one ever has before??? yea right, listen miley lesson learned right? just remember your only young once you'll have plenty of time to do racy photos when your older. you have to think about your younger audience. these photos are only going to make boys and men think you want something you don't. just be more careful, you have millions of eyes on you. love ya girl -kay from pk ny

Posted 04/28/2008 by kaylak19

Miley, you have nothing to be embarrassed of...you are beautiful and the photos are also beautiful. I love the ones of you and your father. Don't listen to the press and ignorant people who are jealous and have nothing better to do in their lives than to be negative and nasty.....hang in there you are cool and Annie is a great photographer with excellant taste & talent, I would love to be photographed by her, she's the best! Good Luck & God Bless

Posted 04/28/2008 by elaine82

Ok people lets calm down! True, Miley's photo is rather racy when looked at within the context of her overly innocent, squeaky clean and repressed Disney channel image. But I would hardly go as far as to call this photograph pornography! Miley has had the misfortune of being dubbed Hollywood's good girl. She alone bears the weight of making up for the mistakes and behavior of Britney spears and Lindsay Lohan. Let's remember that young women in Hollywood have to grow up fast, no matter how their parents treat them, and by all accounts Miley's father seems to be one of the good ones. Let's also remember that Miley is a young woman just beginning to come into her own; come into her own body, and come into her own sexuality. That is not something easily done with much grace when you are in the public eye. But Miley's photo is beautiful and demure, not tacky or pornographic as so many of you are fond of saying! There is no reason for Miley to be ashamed, on the contrary I think she should be proud of the graceful and positive way she is portraying herself as a young woman growing up.

Hey kaylak19, you are right, but the important thing to learn here is that Molly got manipulated by someone to put on makeup, take her clothes off and pose for photos in bed. Don't let anyone trick you into doing the same thing, even if your parents say it is okay. Don't let people tell you that you have to pose without your clothes, ever. Okay?

Posted 04/28/2008 by justaguy

Hey Bchatt, you don't need to be posting encouragement about a 15 year old girl coming into her own sexuality on here, you freak.

Posted 04/28/2008 by justaguy

So, the big supporters of these nude photos here are "trooperduper", "dodgecharger", and "bchatt"...and they all want to talk explicitly about child anatomy and sexuality, like it is no big deal. I rest my case about pedophiles being everywhere.

Posted 04/28/2008 by justaguy

I'm amazed that Miley would come out now and say that she's "embarassed".... did she not realize that she was being photographed? She should have known then that the images could have been embarassing and "just said no". At the end of the day, this is press for her, and I'm sad for Vanity Fair that they are being made out as the bad guy here... come on, if you're going to play in an adult world, play like an adult. What's next - she gets drunk at a party before turning 21 and then says that's embarassing too??

I think this is stupid. She is old enough to do what she wants. i dnt see anything sexy about miley cyrus in this pictures. If you have the mind set to see these as sexy i think you are a sick person. its called art ppl. What in here face or facial expression says sex? not a dang thing to me. She is coverd and nothing private is showing. I see half the 6-14 year old walking around in alot less than that all day everyday.Yet because she is famous she gets the bad end of the deal. Get over it ppl. Im sure your child has a skirt or two that i wouldnt approve of.

Posted 04/28/2008 by kimberly55

I think she's great. She's being a normal human being. I get annoyed at all you people. Trying to say she's 'too sexy'. No... It's more like... Hey I'm 15, this is a fun photo shoot, i must look really pretty here. I don't give a shit what assholes (like these leaving rude comments) will think. I support this girl all the way. She's your girl next door. Go Miley Go!!

For the clueless people here saying "My young child doesn't read vanity fair", let me tell you that YouTube currently has THIRTY SEVEN VIDEOS titled "Miley Cyrus topless Vanity Fair". This is the Internet Age people. Information, ESPECIALLY A PHOTO, does not stay 'inside' a magazine. Currently, every 10 to 15 year old in the country is looking at this photo shoot and deciding how THEY TOO can get a MILLION VIDEO VIEWS by posting a similar video. I kid you not.

Posted 04/28/2008 by justaguy

OMG people get a life! Who cares that she took some professional photos that you don't think are appropriate? So, then don't show your kids...but don't knock her down for it. All you haters are the reason she is going to get sick of this and will stop doing what she does. Then, your kids can blame you for being a prude and for being the reason they don't get to see her anymore. Grow up!! Also, some of you "perfect" moms are only on here to brag about your kid and how they were recently in a stupid movie with Eva Longoria or got picked to do a solo dance...who cares?

Posted 04/28/2008 by whocares

I have to say that the blanket shot is a little much for a 15 year old and the shot with her dad is unnatural. I don't know any kid that would have a pic with her dad like that. That is more of a husband and wife picture. Vanity Fair is known for racy photos. We are all aware of that. But the photographer is also known for her controversal photo's. She is the same one who asked the queen of englad to take of her crown for a more natural approach to the photo. Miley and her parents made the decision to have these photos done. So how about the world stop critizing everything she does. She is a human like everyone else. Lets give her a little bit of a break.

Posted 04/28/2008 by Bustersp

Justaguy you need to give it up. Nothing you are saying makes sense wghen you look at the photos. Nothing in the picture says sex. If you find that sexy you need to get glasses. She is 15. If you have the mental ability to see it that way then i think you are sick. Nobody says a thing when you see the art pics that are almost the exact same thing. Cheerleaders in public high schools that are 10, 12. 15 wear way less than in these pics.Ive seen kids in bikinis that show more. Ive never in my life seen such a stupid bash. My daughter is going into dance and the ballerines wear less than that. Ive seen pics of them modeling too. Its simply called art. I cant expect hillbilly ppl with no sense of style that dnt know art.

Posted 04/28/2008 by kimberly55

Okay, here we have a 15 year old girl that is beautiful and talented that is role model for a varity of young girls, including my 5 year old daughter. Although the photos may be innocent they are not portrayed that way, she's 15, come on, we are letting our "kids" grow up too fast! She seems to eb a sweet kid who was talked into these photos and is stuck between teenager and adulthood. Even her pics with her dad are a bit too suggestive, I mean if you didnt know that was his father ( and I am a fan) you would think they were a couple!! Lets just please keep our kids as innocent as we can for as long as we can, and their role models should help!!

Posted 04/28/2008 by ddantonio

Don't you folks have a life?

Posted 04/28/2008 by getalieyall

Also, for you idiots who are looking at the 'behind the scenes' photos that Vanity Fair has hastily thrown on this site to make it look more innocent, be aware that none of that BS is in the magazine. The magazine only shows nude Miley Cyrus, with tossled hair, heavy makeup, wrapped by a sheet, looking for all the world like a child prostitute waking up from a night with a John. Don't be (further) suckered by Vanity Fair. They knew what they were doing when they manipulated a 15 year old girl and her parents into posing for nude photos, and they knew that putting her in heavy makeup, tossling her hair, and having her pose in a sheet would be a heavily sexual picture. Vanity Fair does this for a living, people. You can see how manipulative they are by the spread they've posted here, that doesn't appear in the magazine. They are weasels, and they are (now) child pornographers. And, there are currently (right this moment, but increasing) 37 YOUTUBE Videos entitled "Miley Cyress Topless VAnity Fair", and every 10 to 15 year old in the country is trying to figure out how to post a SIMILAR topless photo shoot to get a million views. I kid you not. Vanity Fair, you truly suck.

Posted 04/28/2008 by justaguy

It wasn't until someone told her parents these pictures were about sex that they had second thoughts. I dare say that her parents didn't see them as sexual. All they saw was their beautiful daughter. It's sad that we couldn't see it that way as well. Personally, I don't think printing those type of shots is very wise. Obviously, people are not ready to see the beauty in these pictures and many narrow minded sex crazed or sex starved adults cannot help but see these as some sort of sexual photographs. Clearly, the unsophisticated and gutter minded audience will be distracted by the sexual aspect of these photos. Vanity Fair probably should have seen this coming. I don't blame her parents because they don't think of their 15 year old as a sexual being. Nor should they. Nor should we. I wonder about people who look at photos and all they see is sex and then get angry because their children may see it the same way they do. They see sex. Consider that seeing sex in everything maybe wrong. Maybe, you should get your head out of the gutter. You can't seem to keep your minds off of sex. Is that what really scares you? My goodness she's fifteen. Are we now supposed to ban from children running around in bathing suits because they show too much? Or do we just don't see them in that way. Another thing, the law in all 50 states is very clear. A parent or guardian must be on set with a minor and they have right of refusal no matter what any contract says. She is a minor they had to approve there is no way to sign away that right as a parent... not in the United States of America. This makes one wonder if these obviously wonderful parents didn't see the sexual as many prurient minded 'adults' do. In Great Britain and in many European countries, breasts, nipples, foul language and sexual situations have seen easily by children for 75 years. Their teen pregnancy rates, per capita, are no where near what they are in the USA. Promiscuity and sexually transmitted diseases are no where near as prolific. No where near! One study suggests that children in GB are less likely to be talked into situations to be molested. They seem to have a better idea of what is inappropriate and do not associate their bodies with shame and our quicker to report advances. It is much easier, therefore to make the case that our restrictions promote teen pregnancy, promiscuity and our shame may aid in child molestation. Scary? We cannot keep our minds off of sex. We constantly are on the lookout for it either to condemn it or to revel in it. I say, that both sides of this issue are emotionally motivated by the obsession we have in this country with sex. Yes, the conservatives are just as caught up in it. They're often ashamed of it. The liberals are just as caught up in it. They often don't know when to be ashamed. There is a line between obscenity and artful taste. It's not a fine line yet we don't have a very good idea of where it is. We never allow the display of it anywhere so there is no frame of reference. We think all and any exposure and discussion is bad. This breeds bad body image and shame which leads to clandestine forays into sexual experience, hidden and not discussed. Our kids are taught to be afraid to talk about it. Our kids are confused because we think NOT talking about something somehow educates. These photos of Miley could have been seen as harmless beautiful moments but not by the sex crazed, starved and obsessed. Which we condemn ourselves to become by not educating and taking the mystery out of something that should not be mysterious.

I think people are overreacting to these photos. I also think it's very rude for people to be "assuming" Miley is a bad kid because she has a photo with her back showing. Get over it people, it's not like she's showing private parts. And as for the "Christian" way, people who say she's not keeping the Christian way have no right to be judging her, only themselves for judging someone else. How dare you be such pricks and call her bad and just like all the others. I don't see your ass out on the scene so you have no place to talk. Her photos are art, in France and Greece people have their body parts hanging out all over the place, because guess what, every other human on the planet has genitals, it's not a secret anyway. For people who think this is risque, never travel somewhere exotic!

Posted 04/28/2008 by avalon1388

I think that in the context that was implied to the Cyrus's, those photos would have been beautiful and "artsy" but in the context of that condescending article, they were cheepened. Shame on Vanity Fair for misrepresenting their true intentions.

Posted 04/28/2008 by me09

I dunno. The picture looks very modern artsy to me. You'd be suprised, some of our most famous paintings and sculptures of girls naked were much younger than Miley. It's really none of our business what Miley and her family does. Same goes for all "celebrities". You, the viewers, chose to look at these pictures. Who are we to judge what other people do?

Posted 04/28/2008 by tori0323

Tis true Avalon1388. When the wardrobe malfunction by Janet Jackson was huge in the news a child of a friend made a great point. He said, "Who cares. I have nipples." He didn't see it as bad or sexual until someone told him they were bad. To him nipples had nothing to do with sex. However, those who saw Janet and reacted are the ones with sex on the brain. During the halftime show he was watching and he didn't react until he went to school and the teachers were "trying to help the kids recover." People make these things important and this has impact on children. The incidents and pictures are secondary and the reactions are seminal. Yes, to Blel as well.

Posted 04/28/2008 by andrefont

SHAME ON YOU VANITY FAIR!!! It shouldn't matter if she saw it or not, for you to publish such a picture tells me you have no standards. She is a little girl and that alone should keep you from taking such a shot. Somewhere, someone has to draw a line!!! As soon as she showed a desire to not have it printed you should have pulled it!

Posted 04/28/2008 by BJBenson

She's a littl whore. I mean, what 15 year old poses with just a sheet? What kind of parents would let their kid do something like that anyway?

Posted 04/28/2008 by bunniegurl123

This photographer KNEW exactly what she was doing! Miley is 15 and more than likely had her mind in a much more inocent place than this child pornograher did.

i dont know what's it's so ashamed of. she was not naked that people think that's disgusting...she was in the blanket for God sakes. whats so disgusting about? people should chill and start thinking that it's just a photo shoot not a porn. it's so ridicilous how they post stupid comments like that. I think Miley looks very beautiful.

Posted 04/28/2008 by joshi81

What is the problem exactly? This is the art of a persons body. We weren't born with clothes on and being naked or even showing skin doesn't make someone crude or a bad person. It doesn't make it porn. And who's to say that just because she did it means that your "moral" children will get naked and expose theirselves? (They do it whether or not they see it being done by their favorite popstar)

I mean ambercrombie kids has thongs. thats whats gross. not an innocent picture off a 15 year old. The dad pisc is not sick either. He is holding her hand and she is laying in his lap. You mean to tell me you never held ur dads hand. Come on the do a show together, they r famous together. Th ats the piont of that pic. Not what you sick minded freaks think. You should be ashamed for even thinking that way. Sicko pervs is all you r.

Posted 04/28/2008 by kimberly55

I am extremly disappointed that her dad let her do that and that even she would consider doing that. Supposivly she is a role model for young kids. Not by doing that. I have nieces and nephews who watch her tv show. I am 18 years old and i love her myself. But i couldnt believe my eyes when i seen that picture. Seriously, she looks dead sitting there. Not very mature.

Posted 04/28/2008 by BrideToBe18

I don't think the photo is that scandalous. I've seen a lot more flesh on the beach, street, or high school. I also don't think its that beautiful. She looks a bit of heroine chic but with the chubby face of a child. Its not flattering to her. I'm a VERY modest person...my morals would seem laughable on any TV sitcom or movie now. I'm the kind who was mocked during the 60s, who was dumped multiple times because I didn't put out. Janice Joplin would hate me. Yet, I'm not upset by this photo. I even find it odd that she apologized. Would I let my 15-year-old pose for it? No. But I also don't encourange my children to be loved in Hollywood.

Posted 04/28/2008 by ericaj

People are over-reacting about these photos. What's the real issue here? Are people just not ready to see the girl grow up? She's a young woman, and the photos are tasteful. It's not like she's naked, and she isn't even completely naked under the sheet. And if her parents, and other family members are completely supportive of her, why put her down for artistic photos? They are not racy, explicit or revealing what so ever. And for those people talking about "their children not having a good role model to look up to anymore;" grow up, be an adult, why is your child looking at the pictures anyway? Do you really honestly think that a young say, eight year old fan is going to go into the store and look through a Vanity Fair magazine to see their "idol" Miley Cyrus, who is a role model to many others besides young people, including older teens and even young adults into their twenties, and say that they don't still love Hannah [Montana]? Please, I think that the real mistake with these photos being taken was Miley apologizing for them. They are beautiful, decent, artistic photos that show off Miley's more mature side and if people aren't accepting of her, then don't say anything. If you hate the pictures so much, then why bother making a fuss about it? Just leave her alone to enjoy her success. If everyone is downing her now for these tasteful photos, just think of what could happen if they keep downing her, another Lindsay? Britney? I think not, I believe that Miley needs the chance to express herself, and this is one of the ways she will be doing it. So everyone needs to accept it.

You, americans... Your kids are falling apart all around you and you??re so BLIND! You are responsible for your children and not some pictures on a magazine, or the bloody Internet or even school. Open up your eyes before it??s too late. Love, respect, discipline and limits. Try some at home. Besides, there are so much to worry about in the world, don??t let Miley??s attempt to be grow-up and hot (come on, it's just dress-up and play sexy, who haven??t?) to spoil your sacred homes. And try to see what is really there, only gorgeous pictures and a nice essay. Don??t apologize, Hanna Montana, I am perfectly able to explain your pictures to my child. And she will love you the most for been so brave and lovely. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and so is nastiness, narrow-mindness and envy.

Miley should not apologize ANNIA L is a bitch and should be ashamed of herself, she is no different than a child predator, PEDIFILE! She makesme sicxk. She is not as hot as she thinks. And is not a genius in photography, she is a nasty, untalented picture taker.

Posted 04/28/2008 by xxvivalajuicyxx

By the way this is NOT art!!This is an exploitation of a minor by a magazine that wants to fill their coffers. At one time Vanity Fair was just that, Fair. Now,it has succumbed to the degradation of a young starlet with titillating photos. Miss Leibowitz is a great photographer, no doubt about that, maybe she sees the world through artistic eyes as she should, unfortunately not everyone shares her vision. Miss Cyrus is a 15 year old young lady, she would be a woman if she lived in a third world country. Our children grow up too fast as it is, they never really have a chance to enjoy childhood. They literary go from bottle to another kind of bottle. Then we ask ourselves, when the proverbial shit hits the fan: What happened? Parents need to take a proactive roll in raising their children. It is up to the Cyrus Family what to do in raising Miley. She will be fine, given her success and the monetary compasation she has amassed. So, she might spent hundreds of thousands of dollars for a good Hollywood therapist and that won't bother us because our children will have forgotten her by that time and that is very sad. We are after all a very fickle society. The tussled hair, the smeared lipstick and being wrapped in a sheet is no way to interpreter this young lady. We as parents should dictate what goes on in our children's lives, not the other way around.

Miley 15 years old - nude, wearing heavy makeup and highly tossled hair, looks like a child prostitute that has just spent a night in bed with a John. 1. Vanity Fair has used some extremely experienced personnel to manipulate a 15 year old girl and her parents into taking photos of her nude, wearing heavy makeup, with tossled hair, appearing to be in bed, wearing only a sheet. The parents never got to approve the proofs, and HER PARENTS WERE NOT THERE when Miley was being talked into doing a nude shoot, nor when the nude shoot took place. The magazine waited until they left the set to talk Miley into this. They've manipulated the order of theses photos to make it look like the parents were there BUT THEY WERE NOT!!! They should be SOOOOO SUED!!!! They will pull this again, because they've certainly done it before. 2. Vanity Fair was clearly aware that using heavy makeup and posing nude (yes, they had her take off her shirt, she was topless. The photos posted hide that fact, but the text tells it) is an overtly sexual picture, since Vanity Fair has been in the business of selling magazines based on photos for many, many, many years. They, and A. Leibowitz, knew EXACTLY what they were doing. 3. Vanity Fair knows that Miley (was) a healthy role-model and icon for young children and teenage girls, and that these kids often emulate their icons. 4. Vanity Fair cared not one iota about its manipulation, and the damaging effect that this has on child fans everywhere (not to mention the boon it will be to pedophiles who want to convince children to pose nude, in bed, wearing makeup). 5. Vanity Fair did this to make money. They should be sued, and they should be criminally investigated for manipulating the Cyruses. Also? The current number of YouTube videos entitled "Miley Cyrus Topless Vanity Fair" which (already) have hundreds of thousands of views and comments by 10 to 15 year olds? Current count = 63 videos. Number of kids who will be posting topless photo shoots by next week= a Bunch. Amount of money made by Vanity Fair through this manipulation? Also a bunch. The Cyruses should sue VF for a fortune...this is just completely out of line.

i think all those who disagree with her photos are ridiculous... what the hell does it matter if she poses in a magazine with her FATHER. Her pose is very artisiic and young in my opinion. What is wrong with her raising the standards on herself to show that yes she maybe young but she is a young woman. She is in the spotlight and has a responsibilty to keep fans interested and open to see her growth as a very mature person. Parents need to stop being so concerned about her picture in Vanity Fair in which your young kids should not be looking in anyway. Her tv show is still classy and young her music still reflects maturity but a person coming into her own. this does not mean she is like Lindsay Lohan, people just want something to talk about and because Miley has a good rep people just want to find a reason to ruin it. Let that girl be, she has done nothing to hurt anyone. If your kid has a two peice bathing suit that she wears to the pool its the same thing but you let them do it for free. tight little skirts with halters parents say its so cute, your the same as miley's dad except mileys dad understands that in this industry you must adjust. And they are classy with it. Let her grow up and stop being judgmental because you dont want her to. Miley you are an amazing woman and i am proud of you for being so mature! You and Annie L. have nothing to be embarrased about or ashamed of!

Re: Miley Cyrus - Child pornography is illegal in most states, celebrity status or not. Annie Liebovitz should be ashamed of herself.

Posted 04/28/2008 by MichaelRoy

I am a mother of two children who love Miley. I don't see anything wrong with her pictures. So her back is exposed. Oooh, call the authorities. Seriously people, get real, it's art. It's the same deal if she was wearing a back exposing dress to a red carpet award affair. It's seriously not the end of the world. Stop criticizing her and her family's decisions. As for the bra exposure pic on the web, it could be much worse, it could be her entire boob. What if you saw her at the beach wearing a bikini... um, I think that's allowed at least last time I checked it was. Same difference. Everyone needs to chill out and respect the nature of fine art. Cyrus family, I respect the decisions that you have all made together. Way to go to keep art alive!!! Your music is wonderful, Miley and you will continue to be looked upon in this family as a positive role model. Thank you for all of your beautiful music, shows and personality. Keep smiling. ~Krewgirl

Please people...why does everybody get their knickers in a knot? She's a great kid, a great role model and these pics aren't that bad. I agree it's not the best choice for a teen, but really...let's see your mistakes put up here and see how you fare...

Posted 04/28/2008 by AngelDawnLoupe

I completely agree with you AngelDawnLoupe. Thanks for hitting the nail on the head. It really isn't that bad and it is beautiful art.

So when does seeing a person's back, no matter the age pornographic? What if she removed the blanket to reveal a bathing suit with an open back? Would it be okay then? The people that look at photos like this and call them inappropriate are inappropriate. Their thoughts are full of finding perversion in everything around them because they themselves are perverted. It's the Rorschach test; if you're sick and have sick thoughts then you will see a sick image. Get help people.

The uproar over Ms. Cyrus's images isn't because America is being prudish. It is a reaction to a youth culture that is being bombarded with the idea that sex sells and a response to child stars who are often used and manipulated for the gain of the adults around them. Of course, there is nothing for Ms. Cyrus to be ashamed of, in terms of her own body. She is a lovely and what seems to be, lively, young lady with a long future ahead of her. But at some point, it is prudent of us to ask why we think it appropriate that a fifteen-year old young girl is allowed or encouraged to sit for a photograph in which the image - both implied and realistically - is that of a young woman topless. Ms. Leibowitz's defense of the photograph is that it was an artistic photo taken after the two had looked at shots of models. I think, it was probably more that the adults who surround her do not look at her as a young girl anymore. It must difficult to do so when the young lady in question is a multi-millionare. However, someone must act the role of the adult. I would encourage readers to boycott this issue of "Vanity Fair". We are also responsible.

Beautiful photo's, her parents were there, no one should try to make her feel bad about herself. It all seems like a very relaxed set, nothing wrong about it. You'd have to be really conservative and feel the urge to oppress others to take any offense and post these obsessive comments

Posted 04/28/2008 by Mascha

And, one last thought...why is Ms. Cyrus apologizing for these photographs? Her parents, the photographer, "Vanity Fair" all have reason to state their position. But, to put pressure on a 15-year old to make a statement to the press about something "she" did isn't fair.

Posted 04/28/2008 by SMK

Geez, who's the sick one? Justaguy!! How many times do you need to post your comments? And how do you know what a person looks like after spending time with a 'john'? And I'm sure you didn't just research the postings on YouTube - I'm sure you looked at them, too! Why are you so obsessed with this topic? You're the one with the issues here. And the photos are fine! Agreeing with all those who said you can see a lot less at the beach and sometimes even at our own malls! Little girls have ample opportunity to buy clothing, makeup, etc. that make them look older. Who at 15 didn't want to look older because we thought we knew everything?! She is not nude - only her back is showing and it's clear she has jeans on. If she was in a bikini top her stomach would also be showing! Now if all of you spent as much time and energy on paying attention to say saving our enviroment or the upcoming Nov presidential election, there might be some hope out there!

i am a young adult female and i see nothing wrong with what Miley did. It is a picture of her back! It is not a big deal and people are overreacting! I mean she is covered up. For all of you parents who are getting rid of all of your childrens Hannah Montana stuff, without you telling your child about the pictures they never would have known about them (even though they are not a big deal). Plus, I highly doubt they read vanity fair in their spare time; if they do then I'm sorry to say, but it is not their fault for any future mishaps of discretion. They should be outside playing or reading an actual book. I'm supporting Miley on this one, sorry to all of those who saw more in the situation than what lies there.

Posted 04/28/2008 by olivewb13

Why is everyone making such a big deal about this picture. It is tastefully done you can only see her back for crying out loud. As far as the makeup goes she is famous and its a photo shoot and im sure that is the look they were shooting for..people need to step into the 21st century..and stop being such prudes if you dont like it dont look!

Posted 04/28/2008 by blakedylan

What is the big deal and why are people getting so worked up over this photo? It is tastefully done..her back is the only thing exposed..im sure she had things covering her up under that sheet and her parents were there. As far as the makeup goes its a PHOTOSHOOT! She is famous and they arent going to put her in a magazine with no makeup on..people need to step into the 21st century and get over it, stop being such prudes and if you dont like it then dont look at it!

i dont think the pictue is that bad.I have seen much worse. Just because she is a stare. and i think that is what its mostly about. That she is a star and has her life made they have to go after her. I really hope this goes away because Miley is nice ive been to her concert and got an autograph and she was so nice. I REally Really hope this goes away for her it will never go away for life but i hope it just doesnt come out anymore!!!

Posted 04/28/2008 by MaybeLeia94

I think that everyone's overreacting to these photo's. She's showing less skin than if she were in a bathing suit. If you look at the "behind the scenes" photos you can tell that she's wearing pants. She's 15 years old and the pictures aren't that "sexy." They're perfectly appropriate.

Posted 04/28/2008 by amanda80

In no way is this "child porn" are you kidding? Everyone has seen a bare back before even your kids so get over it. It amazes me how many people will get worked up over a young woman taking a beautiful picture but they dont seem to care about real issues, this shouldnt offend or effect you or your kids.

Posted 04/28/2008 by mella

ok..everyone should just calm down....so she took a picture. We should be thankful she is not going out and getting drunk. I dont think the picture is even that bad. all you see is her back. A bathing suit is even more revealing then that......everyone just need to give the poor girl a break.

Posted 04/28/2008 by nicolelach852

Good lord people. Some of you must have full-out meltdowns at the beach with the tiny suits girls of this age are wearing. Those of you who seem the most outraged are the ones seeing "immorality" and "sexuality" and "pedophilia" here. You probably see it everywhere....could it be you are the ones with the problem? Such righteous indignation! Take it elsewhere....

Posted 04/28/2008 by cogito

All i have to say is LIGHTEN UP FRANCIS!!! Are you freaking kidding me? She's not naked, she's showing her BACK. I'm sure there have been Hannah episodes where she was wearing a dress that exposed her BACK. Go open your daughters' Teen People, you'll find ads of girls exposing a lot more skin than Miley in these photos! I'm pretty sure I've seen a bad movie where Hillary Duff wore a dress that...wait for it...exposed her BACK!!

Posted 04/28/2008 by jesus_h_christ

BIG DEAL. I just checked out the pictures with my 11 year old daugher. She agrees, big deal, she isnt showing anything, the real problem are others trying to turn everything into something dirty, my god the way they were talking on the news you would have thought these to be pornagraphic, it was not. What 15 year old doesnt want to be like a model for a day. She looks great, its dirty old men that say inappropriate things about young girls thats the real problem. Theyve done it to all of young hollywood girls, sad really.

Posted 04/28/2008 by Caryn1974

Wow, I agree that the pictures are somewhat suggestive but the reaction is not just overblown it verges on hysterical. I've never seen her look more beautiful and to my mind these pictures are far less exploitive then being plastered on a lunch box. I can't help but wonder if some right wing American family values policy group sent out a newsletter telling all its followers to post here.

These are beautiful artistic photos of a young lady and her father. There is nothing pornographic or inappropriate about these. Obviously those of you that think of them as being sexual have some sort of hidden mental problems if you look at these photos and have deviant thoughts. Miley should not be made to feel embarrassed, and she should certainly not be forced to apologize. Shame on you for confusing art with sex!

Posted 04/28/2008 by christiejb

While I don't totally blame Vanity Fair for the tasteless photos of Miley Cyrus and her dad, Billy Ray, I don't think it was a wise decision to print them. Annie Leibowitz is a very talented photographer, but also should've excercised good judgment when it came to the photos of a 15-year-old. The ultimate blame lies with her parents and other adults who are supposed to help a naive 15-year-old make good decisions. No matter what spin you put on it, the photos were provocative and I'm concerned the adults around her would allow her to pose for such shots. I hope and pray that the lure of more millions weren't behind their decision to do the photo shoot. I also hope and pray that she is able to rise above this and get back to the wholesome image that made her the star that she is. She's a talented young lady who needs guidance and I'm afraid she's not getting that.

Posted 04/28/2008 by strikeapose

why don't you people get over yourselves??? If you don't like the photos, don't buy the magazine... it's quite simple, I would have thought... not rocket science. And also, please stop indulging everyone else with your religious rantering... save that for the appropriate vanue thanks

Posted 04/28/2008 by dave2

It's funny how everyone is getting angry about her posing for beautiful pictures. She's fully clothed, if you looked at the behind the scenes you would know that. I don't think she should have to apologise for taking them because there's nothing wrong with them.

Posted 04/28/2008 by SugarSweet

You know, if you would all stop making a big deal about this, no one would care and more importantly, no one would see these pictures, including your daughters. Miley is clearly a protected child, and clearly didn't think this was a bad thing. Annie is also not a photographer who would take advantage of a young girl.

Posted 04/28/2008 by c_topanga

I am a mother to two yourng children and it seems to me that too amny people are concerned about Miley Cyrus's bare back. "Just-A-Guy" is googling every site in the free world to see if he can find one pic with her nipples out or something else perverted. If someone truly does not like these photos, turn off the computer, put down the magazine... But your kids are seeing worse than this at the public schools. Vanity Fair is ABOUT pushing the envelope. If Miley didn't know that, she would have never posed. My advice woudl be that we see this as what it is. A 15 y.o. teen who is comfortable with her body and her star status. Quit perverting it and twisting it to give yourselves something to bitch about. There is plenty out there, go find it.

As a Mom of 2 teens, 17 and 14 (boy and girl), I am NOT offended by Miley Cyrus. I don't see what the big whoop is all about. She's NOT naked!!...She's wearing a sheet, for heaven's sake! Now, the photos taken in 86 of Madonna are nauseating to me! I mean her butt and everything else is showing. Totally, tasteless, but then, again, what do you expect from Madonna? Good grief, there are prom dresses that are more revealing than the pic of Miley with red lipstick wrapped in a blanket. People who are being so prudish need to get over it! Would I let my 15 yr. old pose like that? Why not! She's not showing her breasts or "down below" so what IS the big deal? There are far worse things to gripe about! Like the Britney Spears pics where she "forgot" to wear underwear!

Posted 04/28/2008 by justbeachin44

OK am I missing something? Why should a 15 year old kid have to worry about what your kids think ? That is NOT her job to do so. A parent, doctor, policeman, military people ect. should be your childs role model, NOT a 15 year old child who has yet to learn about life herself. She has done NOTHING wrong. So get over it already. She has learned from this experience. I am sure she has learned how judgemental and nasty people are.

Posted 04/28/2008 by brattygirlmf

What's the BIG deal? At least she's not pregnant or drunk like most of the young stars our kids look up to as "Role Models". I wasn't ashamed to show my 7 year old the picture. She's seen worse just walking through the local mall while shopping with me. Lighten up people!

1. Her parents WERE NOT THERE WHEN THEY TALKED HER INTO DOING NUDE PHOTOS!!!! Vanity Fair and Annie Liebowitz DELIBERATELY WAITED UNTIL THE PARENTS WERE TAKEN OFF THE SET before starting to talk this 15 year old girl into doing nude photos. 2.Her parents WERE NOT GIVEN ANY PROOFS OF THE PHOTOS to approve, they were only allowed to glance through the hundreds of shots on a digital camera... 3. Vanity Fair and Annie Liebowitz knew EXACTLY HOW THEY WERE GOING TO PORTRAY HER once they got her out of sight of her parents: They have portrayed her as a child prostitute who is waking up after a night of sex. There is no other interpretation for the nudity, the sheet, the heavily tossled hair, and the heavy adult makeup. 4. This is child porn which was executed as part of a setup by Vanity Fair and A Leibowitz, involving a plan to get her parents away before executing it...they should be prosecuted for child abuse and fraud. 5. Disney is absolutely correct..this was premeditated manipulation by Vanity Fair and the Conde Nast group. For those of you saying, "Oh, kids won't see this, please go watch one of the 85 videos that were put up TODAY with the title "Miley Cyrus Topless Vanity Fair", and read some of the 4000 comments by kids on seeing these photos, and this video. The atty general of California should seek to prosecute Vanity Fair and Annie Leibowitz for this premeditated fraud and abuse of a child. This is anabsurdly transparent effort to abuse a child in order to make money.

Shame on her father and shame on the marketing machine that only is concerned with selling print units. Someone other than her dad even Disney has to step in and protect this young "girl". everyone who say this is so bad that a 15 yr old is posing naked. 1- shes not naked shes covered i mean come on didn't u see LiLo's pics. 2- its hollywood its wat super stars do when they are famous, they take pictures bc they are pretty and those who are not famous or not rich are ugly and are not on the cover. 3- to the parents dont think your children (12yr olds and up) are so innocent and miley is not bc ur children do have myspace and facebook and youtube accounts behind ur back and they have cameras and they do take unclothed/ half naked pictures and post them to the world. so make sure u check up on them when they tell you they are doing homework on the computer you trusted them with. 4- just leave her alone. 5- Annie Leibovitz, "what type of camera did you use would love to know I'm a beginner and i love ur pictures i saw others in nytimes.com awesome" please email me Ms.Annie Leibovitz (dramj86@gmail.com) thanks again awesome work.

I agree that this may or may not be what we would let our own children do, however, why do we bash people that make decisions that we just don't agree with? Some people in this world believe it is wrong to show their FACES in public! why aren't we bashing them? As far as the question of "what will this do to her career?" I think everyone is familiar with Brooke Shields right? did you know that when she was about 7 or 8 her mother let a photographer named Gary Gross photograph her completely nude frontal? for "art purposes" Brooke then went on to be the star in the movie "pretty baby" where she played a ten year old prostitute!! and she bared all in that film as well. Today her career is doing just fine, she didn't end up in Porno mags, or XXX films. As long as Miley's head is on straight, and it appears it is, she'll be fine. As others have said, if your next door neighbor's 15 year old daughter did a glamour shot like this, nobody would talk about it or even know about it. The fact that Miley can't even walk out her front door without paparazzi following her every move, puts so much pressure on her, that she can't just be a kid, so let's not critique every move she makes, it's her life, let her live it.

What about our young daughters who look up to a young beautiful girls like Miley who should be saying, "I am keeping my innocence and I will not fall into the Hollywood hype.

I think she comes off very well in this article and in the photos. She looks gorgeous and they are in no way too-revealing or inappropriate. As the article describes, the media has been waiting for something to use against her. The bloodbath we saw in the media today was embarrassing (for the media), but will ultimately prove to make her an even bigger star.

Posted 04/29/2008 by uprokbox

Wow, she is pretty girl. Why get worked up over all of this. One picture, which is very much within the levels of good taste, isnt going to be enough to ruin a career or cause some girls that look up to her to become 10 year old prostitutes or some such thing. Though I dont keep up with here programs she must have great talent to create such a following. The photograph and the girl are beautiful, why can we not just see them both as beauties?

Posted 04/29/2008 by CroutonBra

Unfortunately, young celebrity nude or suggestive photos have become so commonplace that many young girls believe that posing for such photographs is a rite of passage into adulthood, much like having sex, getting drunk or trying drugs. Yippee, a new threshold to cross & the buzz lasts much longer with no hangover!!! A thirteen year old girl in our community recently took nude photos of herself & sent them into the infinity that is the internet. The impact of these kinds of pics is REAL. Not earth shattering, but real & sad. How depressing that in this day in age we have become so numb to such blatant sexualization of women at such an early age. Is it time for another sexual revolution? Do not kid yourself that these are just beautiful artsy photos. The calculated intent was there, just look at the difference in the hair & makeup in the various shots. Annie knew exactly the message that she wanted to convey & you don't have to be a perv to see that she accomplished her mission. Shame on her for the premeditation & on everyone else involved for compromising this young woman's dignity. Remember, SEX DOESN'T SELL IF NO ONE BUYS IT!

Miley is definitely a victim here, she is only 15 years old! The adults, the magazine and the photographer responsible for doing this to her should all be taken to court and dealt with like any other pervert in possession of, or promoting child pornography! This could ruin this poor girls career and you can bet it will be the talk of the school yards! What is this going to do to her millions of fans between 7 years old and 18 years old? Their idol, topless in a national magazine!! SHAME, SHAME, SHAME ON YOU ALL!!

As a child advocate I do believe that Miley is too young to be in such "artistic" photography; however, I do NOT believe Miley has ANYTHING to apologize for! I understand more than many the role of a girl like Miley Cyrus plays in a child's life, but I personally have a hard time looking at those photos and seeing how they are going to push any child into "wrong doing." So she showed some flesh? If those of you who slam Miley would have taken a single moment to look at the behind the scenes photos, you would realize that she is NOT nude, and that she was being posed by people who supposed to "know what they are doing". If you are upset with anyone, be upset with those people, and not a young girl who jumped at the chance to do an article and artistic photos for a magazine such as Vanity Fair and a world renown photographer! Calm down... children today are so over protected and sheltered. I grew up in a family that wasn't afraid to let us watch videos higher than a G/PG rating, and weren't so petrified as to what seeing nudity would do to us! My sister and I turned out just fine, and sure as heck didn't turn into Strippers and Porn Stars... I'm all for protecting kids against negative influences, by Miley sure as hell isn't one of them! CALM DOWN! Miley... if you happen to read these comments, please don't focus in on the narrow-minded people that roam this planet. Keep being the beautifully talented young woman you are, and don't let anyone stop you from holding onto your dreams! Also... keep that level head of yours as it is a priceless possession that you will be thankful you have as you get older, and wiser!

Posted 04/29/2008 by DaniLoren

I think that the picture is a beautiful idea. However, not for a 15 year old. Especially one that is supposed to be a role model for children around ages 7-14. If the model in the picture were someone older it would be magnificent.

It's just fate... Celebrated photographer Annie Liebowitz earns as asterisk; joining Bill Clinton, Mark McGuire, Connie Chung and other celebrities whose lifetime achievement is overshadowed by an infamous act, in this case a charge of photographic pedophilia. She couldn't have forseen the day her semi-nude portrait of a fifteen year-old girl would appear the same day as grotesque sex crimes against girls, including an incest-kidnapping-inprisonment case involving a man who forced his daughter to bear his multiple children while being locked in his basement as well as revelation of the pregnancies of dozens of Mormon girls aged 13-17 years old. Two questions remain in the Liebowitz case; how did Liebowitz plan the photo encounter and what will advertisers reaction be to Vanity Fair and it's sister publications?

Look everyone, as far as I can tell, there is nothing showing that you don't see on any beach or backyard barbecue. Even if there were, it is a human body: so get over it! Yes, young women develop breasts: deal with it. Yes, Miley Cyrus is a pretty young girl: good for her, God bless her and keep her safe. I'm sure V.F. stands to sell more issues with her showing some skin... especially with people freaking out that a girl's back is shown too completely. But don't condemn anyone, who are you to judge another's actions? What is it that's being condemned here? I'd say that puritanical ideals that see a body as "sinful" rather than "beautiful" have made this into WAY more than it should be. Pornographic? Is that a joke? Lay off the Cyrus family and take care of your own. Or, if you've got extra time, take up a worthy cause: save an animal, sponsor a poor child in the U.S. or a 3rd world country, volunteer at your local library or with the Forestry service.

Annie is my hero other than my friend K Woodburn from Il. who is also a photographer. These pictures are AWESOME. thanks Annie L.

Kudos to the very savvy Cyrus family for taking Miley to the next level ahead of the inevitable dumping she'd endure as soon as Disney figured she was no longer a suitable vintage for their 6-14 niche. Disney blew it with Britney and Hillary Duff, completely missing the boat on their transitions out of Marcia Brady Land. Miley has a bright future out in the real world, away from the suffocating, a-sexual world of the mouse, the duck and the sterilized corporate suit.

Omiigosh .. i mean come on people. Is everyone jealous or sumthin?? Miley cyrus did nothing wrong and if all you sad people consider this as pornography then you really need to reasearch what pornography really is.Jheeeeeze people get over it. Your making a big deal over something sooo small. I dont think Miley needs to apolgise for this at all. If you don't like it then dont show it to your children. Simple. Its not like they read vanity fair anyway. So Juss leave her alone and grow up.

This is a nice well composed picture that Annie created! Nice work. It isn't demeaning at all.

OMG Can we try for one moment to get real people? Are you so uptight that you actually believe this is kiddie porn?If that's the case you should all dress your daughters in burlap sacks, cause you see more provacative teens in the mall than these photos! If you take offense to these photos move into a cave and leave the rest of us alone!

I can not believe Vanity Fair would allow these photos. She is 15!!! What is wrong with the photographer!! Does the photographer not know that she should be arrested for these photos. I am ashemed of Vanity Fair, Annie Leibovitz (photographer), her parents,CESD talent agency,Disney and anyone else involved. You should be ashmed!!!

Miley and family. I have two grand daughters and a grandson that watch you and listen to your regularly. I have never seen a more beautiful loving family and daughter. If the rest of the world cannot understand - they are responsible for their own and can do nothing but condemn, than they are the ones in need of help. Take care of your beautiful family, love them and don't stop being the loving family that you are. That is what EVERYONE should be looking at. Be proud of who you are and what you have and NEVER forget the gift GOD gave you that makes YOU happy. Love to you for all the wonderful, God given talent you have and share with the rest of the world.

For all the people who are posting ridiculous comments about Miley's photo shoot: GET OVER IT! Your pathetic comments about how the photogrophers are disgusting and of how shocking the photos are, is stupid. You are obviously the ones who have a messed up and dirty mind. If all you can think of when you see the photos of Miley is sex, than you seriously have issues, and should consider treatment.

"oh she's just a kid!!" give me a break, she's old enough to be legally married in half of the states. you people really need to wake up. what's worse, a picture of hannah montana's back, or your SCHOOL teaching your 15yo son that it's ok to have sex with another male?

If you know anything about Prerafaelite paintings by such artists as Waterhouse -- you would see the familiaries in this photo. These paintings are known for celebrating young women's raw beauty. Miley is on the edge of becoming a woman. I think the photo captures this. Let's celebrate this beauty instead of craming her into a teen role forever. Cramming is how we get our Lindseys and our Britneys. Let's let her make that transition gracefully. Great Job to Ms. Leibowitz who is now and will always be a true artist. Miley you are so beautiful! Be proud!

Posted 04/29/2008 by demar8

Annie: The pictures are beautiful, artistic, and masterful. You have outdone yourself yet again. The simplicity of the poses and backdrops reflects the work of a true artist. You have a gift. Miley: you have nothing to be embarrassed about, sweetheart. Please don't be swayed by public opinions that obviuosly have no respect for art. Billy Ray: The pictures of you and Miley are tasteful and show only a father's love for his daughter. Anyone who interprets the photos differently has the problem--not you. Try not to be hurt by the ignorance of others.

so everyones flipping out about this whole miley cyrus picture asking what next? playboy?!? and freaking out cuz their children look up to her..first of all the picture was for vanity fair what kind of 10 year old looks at vanity fair, i mean now im sure your kids know cuz its all over the news.. but if u had just left it alone and let it be what it is your kids would have never known. and trust me if they wanted the picture to be raunchy they couldve made it raunchy..its art she's completely covered except for her back and her arms. its not like any part of her breast was showing and obviously the picture isnt that bad considering her parents and the photographer didnt have a problem with it..so leave her alone the media always tries to build stars up and then tear them down..you dont see any pictures of her drunk or stoned or completely naked with a guy.. plus the picture taken is a classic pose.her parents are keeping her grounded and their doing a good job i personally think miley looks gorgeous and the picture was tastefully done.

Posted 04/29/2008 by sillsbagills

Holy cow so many people over reacting due too one picture, she could have done without the make up for sure, but too never let your kids watch her show again, etc.. thats pushing it way too far. Unless you are a holy roller. It is almost like wearing a swimsuit unless you dont let your own children wear them, especially a two piece then your really showing skin. You hard core people should leave her alone unless your stuck back in the old days. Hannah rules!!!!!!!

Posted 04/29/2008 by scarymary

I find it curious that these particular pictures were take AFTER the parents left the set. If you are an actress/singer and want to keep a wholesome image and be a good role model you don't take pictures without clothes on. Period. I don't care how "artistic" the picture is supposed to be. I am disappointed in Miley but not surprised. It was bound to happen sooner or later.

Posted 04/29/2008 by dewy

I think some of these people who have made post to this need to get off their high horse! It is because of people like you that these things are blown out of portion. I have a 7 year old daughter and I have no problem with these photos and her seeing these photos and I would have worried if her parents WEREN'T there. These photos are beautiful and Miley has nothing to worry about. They were very artistic and tastefully done! Annie Leibovitz is a VERY talented photographer. And as for the photos of her and her dad, I think they are very tender and loving photos and I only ask the person who made that first post, what are YOU thinking? I come from a good Christian back ground and I still uphold very strong values and morals and I think you people making a big deal out of this need to get a life! You go Miley, your beautiful and talented and you have nothing to be ashamed of. Our prayers are with you. Just stay focused and on the right path. Being a role model is a big burden and NOBODY is perfect.

I am just barely 16, about the same age as Miley. I have read on this website, and have heard from many adults that Miley just wasnt mature enough to know what was going on in those pictures.I must very strongly disagree. Any girl my age with a grain of sense would know that having people take provocative pictures of you, especially when your a little kid goddess, is stupid. Maybe she was trying to seem more grown up, or distance herself from Disney-fied Hannah Monatana. Whatever the reason, she made a poor call in judgement, which she needs to apoligize for. I have a little sister whos eight, and worships her. I dont want this to be the role model shes presented with. My point is this: Miley needs to stick to cowboyboots and tanks, and leave bedsheets to someone else.

Posted 04/29/2008 by YoungThinkingChick

I agree fully Momtomom. What is wrong with people? As a father of two teenage daughters, I, nor they, see anything at all wrong with these photos. They are artistically clean and tastefully done in our opinions. There are just too many closed-minded people out there who constantly try to impose their own personal beliefs onto the rest of us. My mother always told me, "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all." Well, Miley, I think you are a beautiful and talented young woman. The rest of you should listen to mothers advice.

Posted 04/29/2008 by billgjr

I believe it is one of the most beautiful and thought provoking photographs I have ever seen. Her expression rivals that of Mona Lisa in its subtle admixture of innocence and seduction; practically angelic and demonic in the same subtle gaze. How Lebowitz coaxed that look from Miley I will never know. Bravo to Vanity Fair for publishing such an astounding work of art. Posted 04/29/2008 by jemahayde

I don't see anything sexual in these photos and I'm a photographer. I honestly don't see what the big deal is. I see photographs of girls her age like that all the time... It's called wearing a prom dress. All these parents on here need to stop freaking out. The blame shouldn't be on Miley's shoulders. Miley shouldn't have to be your kid's number one influence... That is the parents' job. I'd also like to add that Miley is growing up. She'll be 18 soon enough and she can do what she wants. And you can't do anything about it.

I THINK IT IS NOT RIGHT WHAT WAS DONE TO MILEY. ALL OF VF KNEW WHAT SHE WANTED THAT PHOTO TO PORTRAY, AND THEY AIRED IT AS IF SHE JUST STEPPED OUT OF THE SHOWER AND WAS TRYING TO BE SEXY. MILEY IS AT AN AWKWARD AGE AND COULD BE INFLUENCED TO DO SOMETHING SHE MIGHT REGRET. JUST LIKE THIS ONE. MILEY HONEY YOU ARE VERY MATURE FOR YOUR AGE OF 15, HOWEVER LOOK AT WHAT YOU ARE DOING TO SEE IF SOMEONE COULD TURN IT TO LOOK LIKE SOMETHING BAD. YOU HAVE EVERY LITTLE GIRL THAT SEES YOU, WANTING TO BE YOU. EVEN IF IT DOESN'T BOTHER YOU IT COULD BOTHER THE PARENTS OF YOUR FANS. I LIKED THE PHOTO BUT I CAN SEE HOW IT WAS TAKEN TO MAKE YOU LOOK LIKE SOMETHING YOUR NOT. MY 11 YR OLD LIKES YOU A LOT AND I GO TO YOUR MYSPACE AND SEE WHAT YOU HAVE AIRED RECENTLY TO MAKE SURE SHE WILL BE GETTING POSITIVE INFLUENCES. I AM SORRY THAT YOU WERE PULLED INTO THIS NEGITIVE WAR FOR VF AND LOTS OF OTHERS TO MAKE A POINT ABOUT TEEN STARS. AS FOR THE PUBLIC I THINK YOU SHOULD GIVE HER A BREAK AND CONCIDER THE OPPERTUNITY SHE WAS GIVEN AND HOW THEY MADE HER FEEL LIKE LESS OF A PERSON. ALL LITTLE GIRLS WANT TO GROW UP. THEY ALL LOOK UP TO SOMEONE, MILEY DIDN'T ASK TO LOOK LIKE A SLUT. SHE WAS MADE THE VICTIM IN ALL THIS. SHE WANTED THAT PHOTO TO LOOK LIKE A VINTAGE ARTIST PHOTO. AND THEY TOOK IT AND MADE IT TO BE SOMETHING ELSE. OUR NATION IS SO TWISTED AND I HATE THAT WE CAN BE THAT CRUEL TO ONE ANOTHER. MILEY I AM SORRY FOR YOU. KEEP YOU HEAD UP AND YOU WILL PULL THROUGH. JUST REMEMBER LITTLE ARE WATCHING YOU.

She's a lovely girl with an involved, tight-knit family. Something to remember while reading all these posts is that many people came here pre-outraged and see exactly what they planned to see. I see a beautiful girl and her father who enjoy hanging out and breathing each other's air. We should all be so lucky to have that kind of parental/child relationship, and I'm happy to say I do. That said, I also think there's an opportunity for publicity being seized upon by several parties. BIG grain of salt.

What are people going nuts about. Have you seen what kind of bathing suits a 15yr old wears. She had more on than what I have seen lately that parents let their 15yr olds wear. Get a grip all the bashers towards Miley right now. Tell me who whould you want your kid to look to, here are your others: Britney Spears Lindsey Lohan Paris So before all you judgers who are ready to send out the lynch mob think about that one. So OK, i get where all the moms are coming from, i do. But if you guys take the time to look a little deeper into the issue... she isn't completely naked, she does have jeans on. To be honest, all the negative attention this is getting is the only thing that is blowing the issue completely out of the water. Believe it or not, our society's young starletts do grow up at some point.

I am a parent of a seven year old chid who idolizes Miley Cyrus as herself and as Hannah Montanta. I am also an avid reader of VF and own my own photography business. I have to say that personally I am disapointed in what the magazine has done to make a sale. As a photographer I understand that it is a very fine line to walk with that age group of young women. If you shoot them too sexy you give them a bad image to their peers and others along with your business. If you shoot them to boring you risk future clients of the same age group. What everyone is forgetting is that there is a child invloved in this mess a child who is making apoligies for something that she most likely had no control over. Hopfully Miley and her parents will learn a valuable lesson from this event. But more imporantly is the parents, like me, who have children who watch the child star every day. We as parents need to let this one slide and not make a big deal out of it. My daughter saw the photos and we talked about how they were not appropreate for her age, and how I as a photographer would never take a portrati like that of someone her age. We talked about the decision that Miley made to allow herself to be photgraphed like that and my daughter put it best when she said, "Well, somtimes people make mistakes." That came from a seven year old folks. Think about it.

If I see her at the Grammys next year in a backless evening gown, should I call Child Protective Services?? My God, do you people not have anything better to do than critique a photo of a 15-year-old girl, who chooses to pose in something other than a sparkly pink tank-top??? So its a little more racy than what the public is used to from her, so what? People do grow up, and young women do have the right to want to experiment. Give me a fucking break.

Posted 04/30/2008 by mel071

You people REALLY need to get your heads out of your butts. Its an ARTISTIC magazine! It's an amazing photo, it's natural, beautiful and gorgeous. If you say otherwise, you obviously don't know art when you see it. It is NOT pornography. And the picture with Billy Ray, DOES not look incestual, it's a very loving picture. How about next time you want to judge art, you learn about it first. Last I checked, this was Vanity Fair, not J-14, or any of those other teeny-pop mags. Vanity fair is for art and Fashion. And she wasn't naked either. Besides, its just her back. Everyone is acting like she was fully nude on the cover. So what, are you not going to take your children to the beach anymore either, because the teenage girls barely have any clothes on? Let's be serious now people. How about instead of judging the poor girl, you get a REAL life. Or even better, how about YOU spend time with your kids instead of letting them watch so much tv. My 14 year old sister loves Miley, and you know what? I'm glad. Miley is the best famous role-model out there for young girls, better than Vanessa Hudgens, or Hilary Duff, or Ashley Tisdale. I'd rather my sister watch Hannah Montana then High school Musical ANYDAY. Why do people always feel the need to judge famous people? do they really have nothing better to do than to sit there and pick out EVERY little think about people they don't like? Let's just pick everyone apart while we're at it!

Posted 04/30/2008 by SweetDecadence

A 15 year old allowed to watch Sex and the City? That kind of leniency is her first problem. Second, In at least 2 articles I've read her dad had said he wants to be Mileys friend. I'm quit sure Miley has plenty of friends. She needs a dad there to tell her no when she needs to be told no. No matter how much money she makes.

Posted 04/30/2008 by kat67

Honestly, people. Everyone's making a complete mountain out of a molehill. This photo you're all criticizing is an incredible work of art. I don't think Miley should be ashamed of this! She got a chance to be shot by one of the best photographers in history! I think everyone who is chastising her and Annie Leibovitz should be ashamed. Every one of you has seen a celebrity pose "nude", and every one of you knows that she's showing much less skin than almost any of those other "nude" photos. Parents are screaming that "she's only 15! How could the magazine let her do that!?" But I can tell you right now, most 15 year olds show more skin every day than she does in that one single photo. Any girl in a BIKINI is showing more skin than that. Really, everyone. Are you really going to make a federal case about this? Think to yourself. It's not worth it.

Posted 04/30/2008 by teague

Okay people posting stuff about how slutty that Miley Cyrus' pics are stop it. I am not a Miley Cyrus fan, personal I think that photo is the most talented thing that she's done with her career. Finally something in pop culture actually with enough standard to be called art. The you parents and people are freaking out are the sole epidemy of idiots. No wonder your sons and daughters dance and sing to a 15- year old girl who switches hair styles to trick the world into believing she's towo separate people, you've shown them its okay to be idiotic. Your stupid, and its rubbing off on them so their now incapable of properly functioning within society. The photo isn't about her naked back and a blanket, its much more complex than obviously the average person can handle. If you people knew anything about visual literacy you would obviously know it is about avoiding the abyss (big word for you non-idiots) that other stars fall into and her attempt to avoid it. And another thing her audience was not the tween kids, Vanity Fair is a liberal arts and politics magazine aimed for late 20's - 30's women! What little Miley Cyrus loving ten year old bafoon reads that crap?! So stop talking about it, its a dead subject. If only your IQ was only a little bit higher than you would understand.

Posted 04/30/2008 by hellobryce

To me, rather than creating a unique "work of art", Annie Liebovitz seems to be channeling previously controversial photos of Hannah Montana guest start, Brooke Shields. Is it just me or does the photo of Miley & her father seem very similar to Brooke's Calvin Klein ads, and the blanket-clad photos seem similar to what was released from Pretty Baby? I'm sure PR reps are trying to help sex up Miley's image to prepare her for an older market, but it just seems this was all done before with Brooke--only Brooke wasn't a disney star.

Posted 04/30/2008 by fizzywater

You know, I don't like these photos at all of Miley either. My daughter always bought stuff that had her on it and now our daughter doesn't like her because of these photos and she is forbidden to buy anything else that has her name or pics on it. What do the parents do now having all this stuff from hannah montana. We spent hundreds of dollars over the past few months buying stuff and now it's trash. I think parents should get there money back. Photos like this of a 15 year old girl should not have been made.

Posted 04/30/2008 by nightraiser

Actually, I found it quite amusing how everyone is trying to find something wrong with this girl. It seems as if everyone is HOPING for her to be like lohan or hilton, but cannot fathom the idea that maybe she is different. These photographs are gorgeous and non-exploitive. They are innocent, classy, and are far from racy. Miley and Annie DISCUSSED the poses before hand. She was not forced to pose in that manner, it was by choice (if anyone would care enough to read rather than assume). Everyone needs to stop being negative.

you no wat...miley can do wat ever the crap she wants and it makes me mad that pple are judging her cause her pics, i think its beautiful and yall can all just quit being hatters!!!!!

Posted 04/30/2008 by xxwbxx1

When I first heard about these photos that were being taken of Miley I had to go on and see for myslef and I must say I was expecting much worse. These photos are innocent and many well know "respected" stars have had there picture takin in my similar poses. I feel many people are too quick to judge those that are trying to be successful. Also, how many young children that look up to Miley read Vanity Fair. Not many I would presume considering their age. Therefore, who are those photos honestly affecting. No one. They are innocent and this situation has been completely over exaggerated and it disgusts to me to think there are so many people out there that are just trying to make everyone elses life so miserable. Its time to grow up people and realize how high you are setting the bar for many of these young children. It is so high that it can never be reached no matter how hardhey try it will never be good enough for some people. So rock on Miley!

Posted 04/30/2008 by bartram

I am not a fan of VF and only signed up to make this comment. I am a mother of three young girls and I do not see anything wrong in these photos. It is the public and the media that are blowing this up. As for those of you who belive the her parents are taking advantage of her for the money.....all the money that is made by Miley and Hannah goes into a trust that can not be touched by anyone untill Miley is 18. If the public and the media keep hounding on the girl, she will end up in situations like the Spears girls. The media is what went wrong for the Spears girls. Please do not let this happen to yet another young artist. Who is next? Taylor Swift? Dakota Fanning?

Posted 04/30/2008 by momofthree

You all really need to get a grip! This girl is not naked in this photo, not even close. Child pornography it is not. You see more on the beach. As for the photo with her Dad if you all see anything sexual in that then there is something wrong with you. This girl is just close with her Dad. Get over it. I think she is definitely a good role model for young girls who should never be ashamed of their bodies or the fact that they are soon to be women.

Posted 04/30/2008 by wemissmister

LEAVE THIS GIRL ALONE! She is beautiful, and you cant see anyhing other than her back,a nd if back cleveage is bad then what has this world come to? It is a BEAUTIFUL photo of her. It's natural and just shows her beauty. I hope she reads these comments as not everyone thinks it is a bad photo. I understand little girls look up to her but little girls should not be looking at Vanity Fair but due to negative feed back they are seeing the photo more and more as its all over the internet. She is by far the next bRitney or Lindsay. None of us know her to compare her to them. I love Miley I have a 6 year old and I think there is nothing wrong with this photo. How dare everyone make a 15 year old feel bad and apologize for a photo shoot that is beautiful.

Posted 04/30/2008 by sporter1

I honsetly think if someone is going to be embrassed about this?? is durning the shoot, why should she be making a issuie out of this ,if her parents were on set and didnt once say anything to the photographer and the magazinge how they felt?? no...they let there 15 yr old CHILD! show off cleavage, back or not, she is 15 years of age and shouldve not done this. as she is a rolemodel for younger audieance. and some kids these days might think if she can do this, than why cant she?? i dont think miley should blame the magaizne for this?? i think she needs to look in the mirror and take her actions and resoniblities on herself on she couldve said no. and for her parents ,they should truely be ASHAMED OF THEMSELVES as parents to let her do this.

Posted 04/30/2008 by Drgn

First of all she is not naked. You can see pants in the picture and on the story on tv. She obviously doesn't have on a bra or shirt and is draped in a sheet. But I really faught the magazine and the photographer. They know what will sell their magazine and make them headline news and so they suggest poses like this to girls like Miley Cyrus. How do we know that her parents were actually right there in the room while it was being taken?? If they were and they didn't stop it then, they are to blame as well. What would concern me more than the photo is the statement she made comparing her show to 'sex and the city' young kids and girls who watch her show, should not watch 'sex and the city' and now they will wonder about the comparison.

Posted 04/30/2008 by ehr

omg everyone get over it! To the mothers; If you think this photo is seedy, you need to look around on myspace/bebo at normal pictures! If your daughters had common sense anyway, they wouldnt copy any bad behaviour to begin with! I personally like the photos, and you all need to realise that 15 isnt THAT young - nearly sixteen, shes a young lady now! And finally in this essay haha... you must be old prunes the lot of you! x

Posted 04/30/2008 by trishx

Everyone needs to stop overreacting about this. It is truly a beautiful photo. Those of you who find it provocative, maybe you should turn your eye inward, and ask yourself *why* you think of it this way. Maybe it's you who has the problem, and not society. My mother has a photo of me in the nude when I was a baby, and I'm sure many other people do too. Is that provocative? Absolutely not. It all depends on the context. And the context of this photo, is art, not pornography. So give it a break and find something else to be upset about... like world hunger or aids... and leave Miley alone.

Posted 04/30/2008 by jeanne83

I think that the picture is beautiful, but the circumstances are ugly. Annie Liebowitz is an wonderful artist, but she definitely overstepped when she took it upon herself to take this picture without getting the permission of this young lady's parents. Shame on her for taking advantage of the situation. Advice to Miley.....Mom and Dad are there to protect you from people who are willing to take advantage of your youth and inexperience. You don't seem to be objecting to their parenting, but this is a good example of what they are watching out for on your behalf. Next time, call their cell phones and ask..

Posted 04/30/2008 by fritzda

Miley is not going to turn into one of those so called "bad girls," like Britney, Lindsey, etc... She was raised better than that and plus she is still touring and shooting her show, she doesn't have time to do all those "bad things." As for the photos, they are great, artistic and real. She might be only 15, but she is a mature young woman, that is what that business does to you. The news is saturated with this so called story of racy photos, but honestly it was most likely just a publicity stunt for her and Vanity Fair. I am looking at the Vanity Fair site right now and there are 3 places that mention Miley (above the fold), two of which are places to subscribe, guaranteeing to receive the Miley issue. If this wasn't brought up to be a big deal, no one would even care, therefore Vanity Fair wouldn't sell as many issues. I have to hand it to you Vanity Fair, nothing like a scandal to sell millions of copies.

Posted 04/30/2008 by oliverphoto

okay well if all of you skeptics looked at the behind the scenes pics you would see that miley is wearing pants yes she is also wearing a sheet but she is not naked at all i think that both her and her parents would protest her being fully nude this is however a fashon mag and the pics in it are as such ment for fashon only she is not exposing her self. she is not going to become britney unless we make her do so. if someone accused you of something you couldn't prove otherwise would you not consiter becoming that something just to do it. so lets leave the 15 year old alone and let her be who she is a good natured teenager and anyone else that feels i am wrong can feel that way but please don't make her the next britney or lindsey!!

Posted 04/30/2008 by krysmall1987

I have a 12 year old who loves Miley and I still think that is good. You have people out there that do worse and if you want your kids to have a good role model then that should be you and they should live by your example and not someone they dont know. Yes Helen likes Miley but she not looking up to Miley for answers. The adult doing the pictures should of been responsible not to take a picture like that and to print it. The parents probably thought she would have more sence then that. Also it isnt all that bad. Have you seriously seen the clothes they have for kids these days. I have a hard time telling my daughter she cant have certain things cause the she wont have nothing! Anyway people should quit putting all the blame on Miley. She Is Only A Kid. Everyone has said so. And Everyone Maakes Mistaked Famous or not.

I was very upset to view the pictures of Miley Cyrus. It makes any difference whether or not the photographs were "tasteful done". Child pornography is child pornography and I feel this crossed the borders into child pornography. My goodness the child is just 15. It is exploitation of children in photos such as these that force our daughters into the adult world way too soon. The photo of her with her father gives to impression of an incestuous relationship. What in the world was going thru the minds of the Cyrus' to allow such photographs? She just lost her clean cut "Disney Image" and HAD the best of both worlds. I foresee her following NOT to be allowed to view her shows and her path to fame will be forced to take another direction. Shame on you Billy Ray Cyrus for ruining your daughter's career and yours definitely will suffer also. As her parent YOU have the ultimate responsibility. Thank you Vanity Fair for destroying yet another young, teenage role model!

I am a long time subscriber to Vanity Fair and have always been a fan of Annie Leibovitz (I even have one of her books). However this time the publication went too far. As a mother of an almost 14 year old daughter I don't see anything "artistic" about this photograph. I don't object to the amount of skin be shown by Miley - yes you can see more nudity on a public beach. It is not about the it is about the pose. What I object to is the come hither expression over one shoulder, along with the tossled hair and what appears to be a sheet draped around her body. She was set up by the stylist, Annie and I guess her parents to come across like a contemporary Lolita. I hate to say this about Leibovitz, but I think that was her intention. I do not believe that Miley knew what they were doing to her but come on the editors of Vanity Fair knew this picture was titillating. Why else would they choose to print this picture out of the hundreds that were probably taken? When grown up entertainers decide to expose all - who cares. They are adults, they know the consequences of their actions. If they want to grab attention to sell their latest movie, etc. by having Annie photograph them in outrageous poses so be it. But when adults display minors as a sexual tease to sell magazines - I say shame on you! Now I am going to have to sit down with my daughter tonight (who is a huge fan of Hannah Montana) and explain the stupidity of Miley's family and the lack of editoral ethics of Vanity Fair. Once again we have the popular media showing young girls as sexual creatures rather than as smart - thinking beings. I am deeply disappointed in everyone involved in this project.

people, simmer down! dont you have more pressing issues to be up in arms about, such as your war on iraq! its suprising to read so many peoples comments about one celebrity 15 year old taking a few pictures most of you think are so morally wrong while your own soldiers are being killed and severely wounded! a bit selfish dont you think? Miley is entitled to make her own decisions, just because shes a teenager doesnt mean shes not as capable or less intelligent than the rest of us. Give her a break and try and focus all that feedback into issues that are providing an uncertain future for us all like global warming. Im truly disappointed in the people that are ripping into this young girl. Leave her to be

Posted 04/30/2008 by claire21

I think that everyone should just get over it. Miley looks like she's got a blanket wrapped around a bathing suit. What's the deal. Everyone sees at least that much on TV every day!

Posted 04/30/2008 by irishrose2112

I am a huge fan of the photographer and the model in this case. I think the photo is edgy and stylish consistant with Lebowitzes style. I personally don't see what all the buzz is about. I think the photo is that of an artistic nature rather than a sexual nature.

SHAME ON ALL THOSE RIDICULING MILEY AND HER PARENTS!!! Who made you God, Judge or Jury. The bible state, "Let he who is without sin, cast the first stone". I have a 10 year old daughter who absolutely loves Miley. I see absolutely no harm in the artistic photo taken at a photo shoot under parent supervision. Oh my God, so what, you can see Miley's back. How many parents are letting their children out in public wearing sagging pants, low rider jeans, halter tops, tank tops, bikinis or worse? It is our responsibility as parents to set and show a good example to our children. What are we teaching our children by ridiculing and judging everyone else. My daughter may love Miley and want to "be like Miley", but it is my responsibility to monitor her behavior. All those judging should look inside theirselves and see their own faults. That's the problem and shows the ignorance of todays society. We are too busy seeing fault in everyone else that we choose not see whats going on in our own lives. These photos were beautiful and quite tastefully done. Keep your head up Miley and be proud of ALL your accomplishments, and know that God is the only one who can truly judge you. I think the pictures are fine. its not like she is showing anything. now the pics with her dad might be suggesting a little too much. but you people take things too seriously. she is just trying to express herself. ITS ART NOT PORN!!!!!! get a life and stop questioning her. i think the pics look great. she looks really beautiful and she is a great person. other stars have done much worse.

Posted 05/ 1/2008 by punkgirl2010

I think the pictures of Miley are beautiful. Yes she's only 15 but I don't see the picture as being inaproprite. Anything can be turned into something that it's not and some are turning this into a provocative picture when it's really the beuty of being Miley Cyrus. Also, the pictures with her father. They have a very close relationship and that's what the picture is showing- not an inappropriate relationship.

Posted 05/ 1/2008 by nicolee

sure she is beautiful and it is an artsy, beautiful photo but let's NOT forget that she is only 15 for goodness sake! the photo and the choice in makeup is not appropriate for a 15 yr old girl. sorry, i'm not a prude but i am tired of these young starlets trying to grow up too fast, then somehow losing themselves in the obvious lack of morals the movie industry is promoting. shame on her parents!

Posted 05/ 1/2008 by cheyennesommer

I think the picture looks kind of like Miley Cyrus as the girl from "The Ring."; a very young, boney girl in dark grey lighting/background. I also think it is interesting that people excuse the sexploitation of a 15 year old girl as "art." I'm sure most child pornographers call themselves "artists" too. Some other comments are saying that other people do it (Britney Spears, Madonna, Paris Hilton, etc...like those are people you want a 15 year old child to model themselves after) so it's OK. Other comments suggest that many 15 year olds are wearing much less on the beach, etc. Does that make it OK? If everyone else jumps off a bridge should you do it? Last time I checked, morals are something you uphold even when no one else does.

Posted 05/ 1/2008 by lasurfer

How can you exploit a CHILD like that? You are disgusting and you should be thrown in jail.

Posted 05/ 1/2008 by misslk85

First let me start off my saying that I am 25 years old and love Miley Cyrus aka Hannah Montana. As does my 6 year old daughter. I thikn these pictures are beautiful ones of her and no one should judge her by them. She is a wonderful role model and if my daughter could meet her, I would love it so much. I am glad that she is my daughters role model. What does the picture show but her back. After all she is wearing her jeans. There is nothing wrong with the photo and everyone needs to just leave her alone. My support is there and will be. Miley you are beautiful, don't let this get you down.

Posted 05/ 2/2008 by serindo

Anyone who is making this into some sort of hyper-sexual exploitation of children is projecting their own twisted, repressed hang-ups. This is pretty tame stuff, and if you are reading sex into someone's shoulders and neck being visible, or lounging around with a parent while posing/staring into the distance, then you people are creepy for reading that into this. It's kind of like when you find out that the people most vocal in their condemnation of gays have been leading a closeted double-life. Stop projecting your own inner demons onto this young lady.

Posted 05/ 2/2008 by AndyMatts

There's been so much talk about these pictures, its ridiculous. Everyone keeps talking about how she's a role model to girls all over the world. Parents should be the only role models for their children, not depend on someone else to be. Miley took these pictures with her parents consent, and its right. What would the difference be if she had a backless bathing suit on or a backless prom dress? You cannot chose how her parents raise her. Instead of worrying so much about what the next pop star is going to do, we should worry about our environment, our next president, things that actually do matter. Fine, if Miley took these photos and you find it offensive then just be a parent and talk to your children why you dissaprove with the photos, ask them how they feel and move on. Don't stick around the news or whatever just to please your negative views.

Ok I am a 22 year old who happens to LOVE Hannah montana..I watch her show and listen to her songs....I think the pics of her are fine...yeah maybe they shouldnt have done a shot that looks like she is naked...but they did and its not like shes naked...she has pants on and lord knows maybe she has a strapless bra on or something like that..Unless ya'll were there ya dont know.... As to the idiots saying the pics of her and her dad are incest looking...grow the hell up...I wish I had as close of a relationship with my father as she does....shes comfortable enough with him to take relaxed pictures with him, me I wanted to laugh my ass off when my father walked me down the aisle when I got married cause i had to kiss his cheek at the end... Shes 15 for frig sakes...shes gonna make mistakes and learn from them... And enough with the "shes gonna be like britany" its bullshit....no one is gonna know how shes gonna turn out till SHE grows up and becomes who she wants to become...she might be famous but let her be a damn kid and make mistakes too or she'll never learn Annoyed in Nova Scotia

To me that pic of Miley and her father is the most disturbing of those photographs. My 7 yr old watches Hannah Montana; I think it's a great kids show. Billy Ray Cyrus is the real culprit hear, and needs to be held accountable. I'm sure the 15 year old is ashamed enough about this; of course she would go along with the shoot if her own father is approving of it. As for you guys at Vanity fair, you achieved exactly what you set out to (controversy). This was pre meditated and I think this magazine is pretty lame for exploiting this young girl.

Please tell me how many children read vanity fair? Because last time I checked my 8 year old didnt! I think Miley has always conducted herself with dignified behavior compared to all the "Paris' and Brittanys"! Besides that its a photograph which is a form of art and art is all "in the eye of the beholder", so come on people shes already said she was sorry so the sooner you quit talking about it the sooner we can move on!!

What I don't understand is why people seem to think Miley was manipulated. The slideshow clearly shows multiple shots of Miley getting ready and posing with this blanket covering her. I think it's unfair to a great photographer and a shame that people have nothing better to do than cast stones. Now was it a little odd to have a 15-year old pose like this? Yes. However visit any MySpace page and you will see a lot worse from a lot younger!

Posted 05/ 2/2008 by papaya

okay look people... it could be worse.. she could be coming out a car with no panties on. i understand that she is a role model to little girls but she is 15 and she is growning up... to a lil girl miley is there age or like a big sister and im gonna tell ya what i see girls younger then miley walking around in things that the parents should be hit for. im not a big fan of the show but she is a beautiful young lady and no the photos with her dad look un real but hey its a photo shot. half the time girls are spray painted later to fix things. the pictures could be worse. im not fond of the sheet one and the only reason is because she is way to pale and she has bad goose bumps going on. and look its not even on the cover of the mag so if you dont want your child to have it or see it dont buy it for them. i say RIGHT ON MILEY YOU SPORT YOUR WOMANHOOD.... GOD MADE YOU BEAUTIFUL AND YOU HAVE EVERY RIGHT TO SHOW PEOPLE. and i seen a comment about whats next playboy. guess that person doesn't look at those anymore. pictures like what miley did are with the sheet are in playboy and its art and sorry people can't see that. i dont think that she should say sorry for anything she did nothing wrong.

Posted 05/ 2/2008 by lil_mamma84

I am just a few months older than Miley myself, and I would be completely embarrassed to see this photo of me on the cover of every new Vanity Fair magazine in America!!! Girls my age are not mature enough to be posing like adults.

Posted 05/ 2/2008 by crtcats

I don't see anything wrong with this picture. If you see child pornography than there is something wrong with you. So she has lipstick on, what is the big deal? I saw a commercial once with two 6 or 7 year old girls wearing makeup and a wedding dress. and the music in the commercial went like this, "we bring good things to life". Who is Annie Liebovitz anyway?I never heard of her before, and I never bought a "vanity fair"magazine because of the name. A satin sheet? Is the maker of the sheet also an advertiser in the magazine? The next thing you know the Mona Lisa will be called porn because of a smile on her face. Now that I registered to make a comment on this I will be getting some more junk email ads and spam. "Publicity" for the photographer and magazine and that is all that it is. There are more IMPORTANT things to worry about. She has a very good singing voice and I know that she will keep singing no matter what is said about this picture. Wishing you well miley.

Maybe this is just how my little mind works, but...an under-age girl was asked to pose topless (albiet covered in the photo), however in order to create the illusion she is topless, Ms. Lebowitz and the handlers had to have Miley remove her top to cover herself the blanket. Not being expert in child exploitation laws in California (where the photo was taken) does this photo shoot now constitute a crime? Second, as a Disney share holder, does this now constitute a breach of contract on Miley's part to Disney (ref: comments made by Disney spokesman to NY Times on 28 April). No matter how you slice it, this was a silly move. First Amendment Rights are almost inapplicable here as Miley has not yet reached her age of majority (and in a subsequest statement expressed remorse for the photos). Art has even less to do with the matter. The law of the land at some point suppercedes art. In the end, this photo shoot will probably not change a thing. Parents will not let their pre-teen kids see the photos, and those same kids still love her. I only hope that the Cyrus' are smart enough to move away from this and return to her original motis operandi "modest is hottest" and leave the expresive, experimental, quasi-illegal scandalous crap to Lindsay and Brittney. At least until she's either out of her Disney contrat or 18, that is....

It's kind of funny...just last weekend (before the photos broke) I was riding with my 9-yr-old daughter and a Miley Cyrus song came on the radio. I told her how I was getting a bit worried -- Miley was getting to be a bit too much like Hannah Montana and less like Miley...and oh, was I right. As a mother of a Miley/Hannah fan (who spent way too much money on the concert tickets) - I allow her to watch Hannah Montana and buy the CDs because I thought Miley (and her parents) were grounded...not another Britney/Jamie Lynn/Lindsay train wreckage family. But with these photos, with all the "red carpet" appearances, with all the overdone make up and hair, with all the really questionable decisions by her and her parents (where's the outrage on the pic w Billy Ray???) -- I'm ready to take my discretionary dollars somewhere else for my daughter. Disney better watch out - Miley's hot BECAUSE she's somewhat normal...now that she's proving that's not the case, NORMAL parents like me will flock to other icons for their impressionable kids.

aww. I'm quite glad that parents are realizing that Disney's monopoly is indeed just one big capitilizing scheme, especially Hannah Montana, manifesting itself in their children's choice of television.

Posted 05/ 3/2008 by crashtestpresident

I agree, the photo is nice. I think it's high time Americans realize that celebrity gossip and sex is distracting and manipulating us into ignoring issues and supporting economic decline in the favor of corporations such as Disney. I hope you sell your stocks.

Honestly people. This shot is not a bad shot. She looks stunning and it IS very artistic. I did a modeling photo shoot when i was 13 that was more provacative than this but nobody made a stink about it. it is a very beautiful portrayal of her.

Posted 05/ 3/2008 by GrungeGirl4794

When I saw the picture of her having the sheet wrapped around her, I said "what is this"? Miley is a child. She is posed in a provocative way. Also the picture with her father is unacceptable. I guess she has watched too much "Sex and the City".

I LOVE how angry some of you are over this. I'm laughing harder than I have in a long time. Thank you for that. And for the few of you who agree with me that this is hilarious, thank you for having an i.q. over 67. There's nothing I could say to change the home schooling tv boycotters minds so I won't bother. The rest of us can smirk at the thought that those outraged have no appreciation for beauty. This is a beautiful photo by an amazing photographer who has been doing this for decades and doing it better than most I might add. Check out her book simply titled 'Women'. Again, this recommendation is for those who are not insane because it'll just push you over the edge. The simple truth is this: art is controversial or it's nothing. This image is getting so much press simply because of who it is. People want her to fall. Everyone does, secretly. That's human nature. We want the perfect figure skating routine to be perfect or be tragic. Either way, it's entertaining. But if she falls, there's no perfect. We want goals to be unattainable. This girl is beautiful, she's smart, she's rich, your kid loves her, she can do no wrong...or else YOU'LL BURN HER WHERE SHE STANDS. That's a lot of pressure to put on a person who has been alive for only 15 years. Let her live her life and don't judge her or her parent or a Professional Amazing Well Respected Photographer. Sorry, I love Annie Leibovitz. Anyway, check out her shot of Christina Ricci when she was about the same age as Miley is now. She's on a bed in her see through underwear with a cigarette. Now that's worth discussing someone making a poor career choice. But a back, A BACK has become so overexposed, literally, that it's been called child pornography? Please. You all have no business ripping on this girl. Go back to your church and pray for God to give you a clue.

Are the pictures of Miley really that bad? All you see is her naked back. I mean for goodness sakes we see more skin when she wears a swimming suit. Yes Britney Spears did have racy pictures taken but Britney Spears is having the issues she has today because of underlying issues. Miley Cyrus is not the next Britney Spears, she is the next Miley Cyrus and that is whoever she wants to be. Yes, she is a role model for young girls but is it good for them to think someone is perfect? My mom is my role model and I admire her so much more because I know that she has made mistakes and recovered and learned from them. Hopefully Miley realized that these pictures upset a lot of people, but just remember that if you are going to make such a big deal about these picture... You should make a big deal whenever she wears a bikini. Everyone is entitled a mistake once in a while but I don't think this was a "mistake." She posed for a picture and it is artistic and she looks beautiful. Maybe it's time that Miley starts being a role model for girls her own age by showing them that it's important to be comfortable with your self. Which she did. Just something to think about.

Lets see,, Where do I begin?? I have sat here and read all the comments from all of the so called readers of Vanity Fair. The photgrapher had every right to take this so called inapropriate picture of Miley. I think the picture is beautiful and is by no means is inapropriate. She is fully covered and shows nothing more than what a dress worn on The Red Carpet would show. People need to get a life and I wonder how perfect these parents are that are writing such negative comments. I have 3 children of my own and I assure you I am my own childrens "Role Model". I do not need a magazine or a telivision program or any actor to raise my child. I happen to be a christian and my parents raised 9 children. My mother took pictures of my sisters and brothers in all kinds of great candid moments. I look back at all these photos and memories and can't help but wonder what the world would think of my mother and all of the photos that are amazing, funny and rare. I am only sorry for Leibovitz for having to deal with all of the people who have misjudged these photos. Get a life people, try taking photos of yourself, maybe you will see somthing in those pictures you dont like!!!! Sincerly, Ana Blendu

I don't understand why people are so shocked by this picture. People pose half-naked on magazine covers all the time, are we meant to be shocked that she's doing it too? It's bound to happen. Besides, it's a good photograph regardless of the trivial nature of it.

Posted 05/ 4/2008 by Thelazyfox

What kind of shoot would you like her to do? Go to Glamour shots with some feathers?? A strapless prom dress? I bet you wouldn't think that was wrong. For goodness sake she is a movie star. What is wrong with taking some artistic shots that are timeless with a world known photographer? She is not nude. Creating a media craze describing her as being nude is unrealistic and exaggerated. My children love their dad and it wouldn't be unrealistic for them to sit with their daddy taking some beautiful "untradtional, boring " images.

Ok, while the picture may not be completely appropriate I don't understand why Disney is acting like OMG!!! and everyone is so upset. well, i really do understand that is their little money maker but IF YOU WANT TO BE UPSET THEN BE UPSET WITH DISNEY HAVING GAY DAY AT THEIR PARKS AND PROMOTING THAT TO OUR KIDS!!!

OK, I'm confused. All week I have been hearing about these controversial photos of Miley Cyrus. So I got on Vanity Fair to see what all the fuss was about. Did I miss something? I read the article twice. The photos are nothing. There is absolutly nothing wrong with these photos. Now the people complaining, that is another story. I think people are just bored and need something to get all upset about. Miley is just too "perfect" so everybody jumped on this like vultures. Miley has nothing to feel ashamed about. Move on

Posted 05/ 4/2008 by wynet98

i personally, don't like the music she plays. and i definitley find the disney channel a horror. i mean, you need to teach kids what is REALLY going on out there. i'm not a parent or what not, but when i grew up, i had to learn all that stupid sh** the hard way, because no one gave me any guidance, and sure as he*l t.v. didnt help. i mean i would pose nude when i was 15. we're adventurous, and we want attention. if you dont want your fu**ing kids to see this, then maybe you should talk to them about what is happening. i mean its your body, its your temple, it does not mean sex, it means how confident you are, i personally would do it, but hey, i'm not a star right?

I am the mother of a 15 year old girl. I have admired Miley for quite some time, as I have her father. I believe that he truly loves Miley as very few fathers do these days. As others have stated Vanity Fair is not a magazine that is read by tweens. The magazine is geared toward adults, so it's not as if these pictures would even typically be seen by Miley's fans - were it not for the adults making such a big stink about them. Perhaps they did use poor judgement, but come on, it's not as if Miley is truly naked in the photos. If she was wearing an evening gown with a low cut back, most of the people complaining about the photos would be saying how beautiful she looked. Even if she were in a bikini, or for that matter most of today's 1-piece bathing suits, fewer people would complain than are complaining about these photos that show far less. I think the criticism should be aimed more at the photographer for putting Miley & her parents in this position, but very few people seem to be pointing the finger at her. The magazine also should be held accountable for publishing the photos when Miley voiced the fact that after seeing the final pictures they made her uncomfortable. Let's point the finger where it belongs & leave Miley alone. She is still the same sweet beautiful 15 year old today that she was yesterday!

I AM A MOTHER OF 3. THE ONLY THING I DONT UNDERSTAND IS HOW PEOPLE GET THINGS OUT OF PROPORTION. I LOOK AT THIS AS IF SHE WAS WEARING A BACKLESS DRESS...THE ONLY THING I HAVE A PROBLEM WITH IS THE SEXY LOOK IN THE PIC. MY KIDS LOVE MILEY BUT THEY KNOW SHE IS ONLY A KID TO. THEY WILL NOT WORSHIP NO ONE BUT GOD AND US AS PARENTS. WE TEACH OUR KIDS BETWEEN FACTS AND FICTION SO THE T.V. ROLES ARE NOT REAL DO YOU KNOW HOW THIS HURTS MILEY IF SHE MEANT NO HARM. YOU PEOPLE CAN BE MEAN WITH WORDS BUT REMEMBER SHE IS A CHILD TO. NO MATTER IF ITS RIGHT OR WRONG SHE IS A CHILD. PLEASE WATCH WHAT YOU SAY SHE IS STILL A KID AND YOU TRASHING HER MAKES YOU NO BETTER THAN WHAT SHE DID WHETHER ITS RIGHT OR WRONG

Posted 05/ 4/2008 by tammy1

Let's put this into perspective. If her parents signed off on the photos - then they are simply attempting to prepare for her post 18 year career and they should admit to it and make it clear that they are nothing more than entertainers, just as a jester to a king's court and that the Hanna Montana show is just a job. That way the 12 and 13 year olds that watch will understand that it is all fake. As for Vanity Fair and Annie Leibovitz, they should be brought up on criminal charges for child porn. Many web sites shooting young girls, FULLY CLOTHED but in suggestive clothing, makeup and poses have been found guilty of such a crime. Annie Leibovitz took the same types of photos. The makeup was applied to make her more appealing just like the criminals do to make their "models" more appealing. The photo of her and her dad is not a father - daughter pose. If the viewer did not know they were father - daughter, the viewer would assume other things. Vanity Fair published it, they should be criminally libel for promoting child porn. If Annie Leibovitz was not taking photos of the rich and famous, she would be just another photographer, she is not an artist.

I love the photos! I think they are absolutely beautiful. Tastefully done. I would much rather see this " art" being published than a crotch shot of brittney - drugged out lohan or any of the other "teen" role model. Its amazing that she would have to make an apology to satisy the hypocritical, close minded individuals that see this as anything but what it is... art. Get over it people. I would love to have Annie Leibovitz photograph my family. ANYTIME! What an honor.

OK people get a life. She did a photo shoot that she believes is great. If everyone would just explain to their kids that Miley is just like anyone else instead of getting upset which in turns upsets your children than we wouldn't have these problems. She is doing what every child does and is testing the limits. Everyone in the world has done this in one way or another but because she's famous everyone reacts to this as if it's their business what she does. I highly doubtany of you know her personally.

The picture is a bit suggestive. Ok but others have done it, but the thing that really bothers me the most is I think that her and her dad are just tooo close. I watched the video of the shoot of her and her dad and I have to say they look to be more than just father and daughter. I mean he is way to absorbed with her. Not saying there is more but thats what it looked like to me and i am usually open minded. It just doesnt look right. I could be wrong.

Miley Cyrus looks like she's about 8 or 9 years of age which I'm sorry to say makes the very artistic and beautiful photo seem like child porn. She only has a few more years until she is 18, they go by quickly and my advice would be she should just keep her clothes until she grows up a little and Disney Co isn't her boss. Plenty of time to strip for the media.

I don't watch the show myself, but I know plenty of kids that do watch Hannah Montana. Because she is a role model to kids who watch her show and that she is growing up in the public eye, she should be aware of what she does and the example that she is setting. For those who think kids will never see the photos because they don't read Vanity Fair, the pictures are ALL OVER THE INTERNET! Kids these days are on the internet daily! She is looked up to, and she should've been more careful of the photo shots she choose to do. The photos wouldn't be as bad if they were taken by a 23 year old, but they are taken by a 15 year old, which doesn't seem acceptable to me. The one of her and he father makes them look like newlyweds!

TO JIMMYC, GAILR, AND ALL THE OTHER DUMB ASSES. Where does your perversion stem from? There is absolutely nothing wrong with the picture of Miley and her dad, just as there was nothing horribly wrong with the picture of Miley showing her back. Both of these pictures are beautiful and very artistic. Who in the hell are you to judge? Who made you God, Judge, Jury or executioner? Are you perfect? Obviously not or you would know that the bible clearly states: "Let he who is without sin, cast the first stone". To ALL of the ones disrespecting and judging Miley get real. You are no one and insignificant, In all reality you are probably just jealous or trying to crucify others to hide behind your own mistakes. Miley, you've nothing to be ashamed for and to Miley's parents, you've done a wonderful job raising Miley to be a talented, beautiful young lady. Keep your heads up high, because all of this will pass and Miley will continue to do well.

Oh My God people seriously..... Get over it!!! Clearly Miley is not a Lindsey with her head up her ass or a Brittney who doesn't know right from wrong or the damn Olsen twins who let it all go to there heads.... She is Miley, she is a good kid and its not fair that she is being ridculed for a pic!!! (now reread that last line) SHE IS A KID, A CHILD! Leave her alone yal have no right bashing her when she is one of the ONLY role models left for our kids! I agree completely with so many who said it before me...This is NO different then a bathing suit or a tube top or one of those skimpy lil tops that have nothing but a tie that goes around her back! Seriously have ANY of you been to the mall lately? Seen what kinda clothes are being sold for our youth these days? In all actuality she is covered MORE then some of the tops out there would cover her! So is it that you people are all just that narrow minded, do you have NO lives and just need SOMETHING to bitch about or is it that yal are that damn old! Give the kid a break...My 13 year old LOVES her and I am happy that Miley is who she is and acts how she acts! She is AWESOME, Billy Ray is Awesome and the pictures are GORGEOUS!!! It is so obvious that her parents raised her well! No wthat I have stated my opinion I'll go ahead and worry about the war and children in third world countries starving to death becuz of our ignorance, ya know stuff that matters, stuff that would make a difference if we paid half as much attention to it as we did innocent of a lil girl, a sheet and her daddy! Again GET OVER IT!!!!
