So you think you can Blitz! (Madden vs. Blitz)

November 24, 2008 3:18 pm - Author: Community Writer

Community writer,  Nabokovfan87, strays away from his normal hockey tips and moves over to the sport of football. In one corner you have Blitz: The League 2. And in the other corner you have the heavyweight champ, Madden. Which game is better? He tells you which one is. Do you agree? Stop by our forums and share your thoughts.

So you think you can Blitz! (Madden vs. Blitz)

Well, I have played Blitz: the league 2 and I have played Madden: 20th anniversary edition. I know there are those out there who want to know how awesome they both are, but this just is not the case. One game allows the user to play, dance, shout, and yell in absolute bliss, the other allows you to make your own plays. One game allows you to make your own team, jersey, stats, perform an interview, use steroids, rupture scrotums, and the other allows you to make your own difficulty. One game is awesome, and it is named Blitz.

For those have never heard of the Gameboy or played street fighter for a quarter, blitz is the first and the best arcade sports game. Why, because it required an arcade machine, smack talk and interaction with the guy whose bum you just whooped. Ok, maybe not all of that, but it was a great game in the olden days.

As I hinted at, when you first start up Blitz, you do an interview that decides your position and starting statistics. Then you choose your home town, team name, logo, colors, jersey, etc. By starting the game this way it was basically like starting up NHL 09’s Be a Pro mode and made the game my own instead of just playing as my favorite team. From there you develop into a riveting story that makes every game seem worth something, be it a sponsor, that oh so special cut scene, or some props around the league. Also, every single play can give you props, a sponsor, or injure you for several games. This makes each play have such a gravity that it isn’t about just making a heads up play, Blitz is all about the 4th down and miles to go, 2 seconds left, and a touchdown to win. If you love football, then you must go play Blitz.

Just so you understand why this game is so different, let me explain. Each 1st down requires 30 yards instead of 10, and although you can run the ball, blitz has always been about making those 50+ yard passes. The run can be devastating if you know how to make it, but the most rewarding play I have ever done is that 80 yard touchdown right off the touchback to open up the game. This game is about momentum, punishing the dumb decision, flat out guessing what your opponent is going to do and blitzing the hell out of him anyways. There are no penalties, but keep in mind this does not mean chaos. It simply means that the focus of the game is no longer about whining and acting, it is about getting down to it and playing a great game of football.

I will end with this. There is a trailer out there of Frank Caliendo and Jay Mohr recording. This trailer ends with probably the best, honest to goodness quote I have heard in a long time. Jay Mohr said, “I like to do the blitz because they let me dance. It is just a big church of thugs man, but we love it, it’s the new past time.”

Now, I don’t want this to be an ad for a great game so here is the bottom line. Blitz is a new way to play football and it is the way to play football. Yes it has brutal injuries and mostly naked cheerleaders to get those teens wanting the game, but it is just pure fun. Of course the announcers are repetitive, and there is a lot of the things that get annoying at first just because you don’t understand, but I can not say it simply enough, GO GET BLITZ AND ENJOY IT 100 TIMES MORE THEN MADDEN!

Blitz is awesome but Madden has franchise mode , so until Blitz has that , I'll stick with Madden.

Blitz is fun for a few days but doesn't have the depth or replay value to justify anything but a rental.

Um, I'm pretty sure there were more arcade sports games before Blitz...NBA Jam perhaps?
