Random Thoughts And Things I Think I Think

As the time crawls slowly to kickoff … Great atmosphere at Lincoln Financial Field. I've been here since 10 a.m., back and forth to and from Lincoln Financial Field. The crowd of tailgaters grew from a few dozen then to tens of thousands now and, yeah, everybody is ready to go.

Some thoughts on the game, which is all that matters here …

  • Should the defense be more concerned with the Giants run or the pass? Both, is the answer. I have this gut feeling that the Giants are going to come out throwing the football. So the mandate here is to get to Eli Manning from the jump. Jim Johnson has, it seems, opened some games with a four-man rush as he feels out the offense. Not tonight. I want to see the blitzes and the multiple fronts from the very first snap. Trent Cole is my key player on the line. He needs to make some noise.
  • How do the Eagles match up against defensive end Justin Tuck? Not quite sure, because I think Tuck moves around so much – end to tackle to linebacker – that he is hard to key on. That's what makes him so good. Jon Runyan will see Tuck the most, of course, and Runyan is going to need a tremendous game to win that battle.
  • Something for the offense: Get the ball to tight end L.J. Smith. He needs to be a key player in this offense against New York's defense, both as a help blocker against Tuck and Co. and as a receiver. The red zone is crying for Smith.
  • Will Andy Reid play it conservatively, or will he break out the bag of tricks against New York's defense? Remember that the Giants are without strong safety James Butler, who is being replaced by first-round draft pick Kenny Phillips. The young man from Miami is extremely talented, but he is also making the first start of his career. Maybe he will bite on a play-action fake just enough to leave DeSean Jackson open down the field. Maybe that means the Eagles need to establish some threat of a running game early.
  • Explain to me what it means when a defensive player makes a play and then waves his hand in front of his face? What is that? Am I just not cool enough to know?
  • Chilly temperatures and light winds tonight. Perfect football weather.
  • Having Phillies World Series heroes Cole Hamels and Pat Burrell serve as Honorary Captains for this game is going to add a nice touch to an already-frenzied Eagles crowd tonight.
  • Watch the hidden-yardage battle in this game. Special teams is absolutely gigantic, and I said before, I don't see Jeff Feagles giving Jackson many opportunities to return the ball. Can the Eagles do anything to give Jackson a chance? Here is a wild thought: Use Brian Westbrook as a second return man. I'm going for broke in this one …
  • I'm not sure the Eagles have anything ultra-special for Plaxico Burress tonight, but I know they are going to pay him a lot of attention. A safety over the top? Something, especially in the red zone.
  • Donovan McNabb runs for 39 yards tonight. Don't ask me why. I just feel it.
  • I'm sitting here with ESPN's Sal Paolantonio and he is adamant that the Steelers have the best defense in the league. All I know is that the Eagles have to play that kind of defense tonight. Blitz the heck out of the Giants tonight and rely on coverage down the field from a talented secondary. Manning vs. the bliz, according to Sal Pal, 59.1. "Worst in the league," says Paolantonio. "I think he is the weak link tonight if they can get to him with the blitz. He is in a four-game slump right now …"
  • More from Sal, who is on a roll … "Donovan against the blitz? He is 103.9, fifth-best in the league. This game is all about the blitz and who handles it the best."
  • So much time before an 8:15 p.m. game …
  • Danny Bonaduce is zip-lining into the stadium with SWOOP before the kickoff as a way to introduce Bonaduce to Philly. He is hosting WYSP's 6-10 a.m. slot Mondays-Fridays. I met Bonaduce a short time ago. A tiny guy. Looks kinda crazy. I look forward to seeing what he brings to the table every morning.
  • What happens if the Eagles spread the field with three receivers and Brian Westbrook lined up in the slot against a Giants secondary that is minus Butler and Kevin Dockery? The Eagles have to make the Giants pay.

I'm happy the Phillies World Series Win didn't soften any Philly fans. Let's face facts, the "D" spotted the offense 7 points in the 1st qtr.of whuck Philly had the ball 1:59. Same thing every week. Slow offensive start and burn out the "D". 5 four and outs and a pick doesn't exactly help a defense. Possesion 39 to 21 is not exactly good for offense or "D". Andy calling 2 running plays to end the game is the same stupid play calling he tried against Da Bears. Oh did I mention the "O" was 27% on 3rd down conversions. This "O" does not hit the ground running, they start out very slowly, burn out the "D" and then pour it on for a quarter. All is not lost and I still have faith we can pull out of this but the "O" needs to come out firing and adjust when necessary.

10+ years of AR isnt as bad as 20+ of jerry sloan out in utah with no hardware. just a crybaby owner who shows all his loyalty to a horrible coach who no one wants to play for, who wont ever change philosophy and thinks he is who people are paying money to see. screw the fans if the owner has no balls.

we lost cuz of our defense .. WHY ? because we ran the same EXACT scheme as the redskins .. we took out their best WR and only had 7 and sometimes 6 to defend the run .. And just like we got gashed by portis we got killed by the run this time too .. WE DID NOT LEARN OUR MISTAKES AND WE DID NOT ADJUST.. and thats why we lost

I believe that the best way to vent frustration is to join eagle forum. That is all. I could not even sleep tonight. Obviously, tonight is a different game because we are against defending champion. It is hard to sleep.

One more thing- for ChinaEagle- Watch you parents die while waiting for a SB. Realize that YOU may not live long enough to see a SB win. Being bitter and jaded is, in a way, a great Eagles legacy. We love our team even though they break our hearts. We're like Charlie Brown, always trying to kick the football that Lucy holds.. But I'm waxing poetic. Goodnight.

Well, as usual, I'm kinda drunk. So I will sign off. PlasmaTV, my advice to you is to have a hot toddy and try to relax. And avoid SportsCenter till at least Thursday.

I know we have a chance sccmy...the prob is like everyone's been saying, the season led to this game...it was a very very important game, which could have easily made all the rest enjoyable to watch...now we have to look at every game as a Must win..and it's not fun when they're all must wins...because now , the only one i'll enjoy in the regular season, is the last one vs dallas IF..and only IF..we've won all games from here to there...that's a long time to wait for a game to finally enjoy again, and it may not even happen..so yea, there is still hope, but the mood is somber for most passionate eagle fans because we know what this night meant..and the way they lost it, is pretty much unacceptable.

Falcon is still too young. This is too early to say that they will be the superbowl team. Michael Turner is on the show so far. But Matt Ryan lacks of experiences, he is not like Tom Brady. So, falcon can be the playoff contender but not the SB team.

Our 2 first rounders should be worth at least 3 2nd rounders, a conditional 3rd rounder, and one scrap heap player from another bottomdwelling team.

PlasmaTV- it doesn't matter when Crabtree gets out. We will undoubtedly trade out of the 1st rund and never get a shot at him, anyway.

I am surprised at most eagle fans' reactions. Seem to me, we were worse than the dolphin last year. We cannot do that. Think about phillies. Who thought they get the world series, but they have hearts to prove it. We do have the chance because we do have the chance to meet Giant, redskin, cowboys. This is not over. By the way, AR and #5 will stay in the team in 2009 at least. There is no way that they will leave soon. They will not be fired. Period.

Damn right. WE spend a fortune on tickets and merchandise. WE stay up late to watch these primetime games. (They only run primetime so they can sell more advertising) The Ddeclaration of Independence was signed not far from the Linc, and one of the keys parts of that document was that we not only have the right, but the responsibility to keep our leaders accountable. We, thae fans, keep the NFL in business. And I say to you, our owner owes us better.

I'll say this just to get off of the Eagles for a second... The Falcons are the next big thing. Give it a few years, and they will be a SB team.

Wee, I brought up the idea of a fan revolt. Do I get a cookie? Or maybe I could pick a draft pick for us! Sure I would do better than AR has previous years... Lol.*** Can someone answer my question on when Crabtree gets out of college for the draft? I honestly forgot. :-\

if I am the AR, I will try to get Davenport from steelers. If we want to go to playoff, this is the shot. There is no reason to feel disappointed about that. We got the tough schedule, and the giant is on the same boat. We need the addition.

I am right there with you D_engle...I've had a love/hate feeling for reid, we were 5/11 in 99, 11/5 in 2000, and winning record ever since until just recently, for so long is was getting better every year, and 05 was supposed to be that year, but..well..injuries maybe..we made excuses, they said it tonight, we're all healthy...we could have/should have made a statement...we did...a statement that we need BIG CHANGE, and I like the Idea of a Fan's revolt like in cleveland...they even started brady quinn because they were afraid the fans wouldn't have andersons back..LOL...that's the kind of FANPOWER we need...we're the reason they make the money they do in the first place, I think we should have some say...maybe not playcalling...LOL though that was an entertaining Idea

Gotta Kinda agree with ChinaEagle... We probably should not use our "power running" Game with one time out and two minutes to move 60 yds for a TD. Poor Westbrook. He's gotta be hurtin.

i dont know guys. i figure if we're going to suck, let's just lose the games where it won't hurt as much say if we get further into the playoffs. it took me four months to get over that loss to the pats. even still, its hard to look back on it and wondering about the possibilities. see it as you may, this team is finished. the players are old, and if they were gonna get ANYTHING, it would have to be this year. eagles were in control of their own destiny..or maybe the Man up stairs just said no? either way, we didn't win. had we won, it'd feel like we didn't deserve it and best believe we'd have gotten more disappointments up in the season. the sports channel says we have the third toughest schedule...we have ABSOLUTELY NO ROOM for errors or losses. hope the redskins or dallas knock each other off, and the panthers to start losing games to even think a wildcard. this team doesnt excite me...this loss drained all that optimism and faith and high hopes i had all week. i'll have to endure an earfull all week with redskins fans saying we suck as usual followed by a really cute EXPENSIVE eagles jacket i just bought that seems funny to wear now since people will be laughing deep down thinking "THE LOSER TEAM." sad morning for all of phillys faithful. im off to bed fellas...this was a tough one, i didnt say we HAD to win but in all honesty, we dont have it in us, as ive found out tonight, to win a SB this year. mcnabb still got 120000 tonight, im still paid a salary less than 2 thirds of that in a year, and while i find it hard to go to sleep, im sure he's sound asleep thinking about chunky campbells soup and a fat hoagie tomorrow without a darn thing in the world to care about. season over guys...i wont be watching football until 2009 when hes out, reids out, and new players in who can bring SOMETHING here. goodnight guuys

I want to go to bed, to angry to do it though. Cooling down a bit... But angry as all hell... I think we need to look at the positives from this game instead of the negatives.*** The excellent playing from Mike Patterson. The excellent play from D-Jack. The fade pass being successful again. 2 for 2 so far... Umm... Umm... We scored 31 points? Sorry I'm lost from there.

for dbm517: Trust me, I know about the history about the eagle. The only quaterback fits your definition will be Manning Brothers and Tom Brady. As for Eli manning, he stood up at the superbowl at the last minute. No one will think that when he made 4 interceptions last year against Vicking. He fits into your definition because he led the Giant to beat the superbowl. Regardless of #5, he did not even lead us come from behide in the 4th quater, especially in SB and in 3 NFC championship games. He deserves the shot tonight in that situation. We should not run under two minutes. Look at Eli manning. during the playoff, Giant let running back to be a hero, so he step aside. When it comes down the stretch, he got the shot to beat patriot. Mcnabb deserves that chance regardless of what it had happened. if we want the return, we need to take the risk. As for the SB against Pats. We did make great come back after reaching 30 yards line down 10 points after TO got the the ball. However, in that game, AR made many too aggressive calls, and #5 followed his order. Then, he screwed up. I believe, we should run the ball after TO made that reception. anyway, we lost because there are some plays we should run the ball. But tonight, we should put the ball into Mcnabb's hands. Period.
