Do I need to run linux in order to program in Personal Java?
- You don't need a Linux box to program in Personal Java. For most purposes, it is the same as Java 1.1.8 and uses standard AWT for a GUI. If you want, you can compile your Java apps on your Zaurus using the kopi jar. See the Java section of the FAQ for more details.

Why do I need to erase all my data when I install Cacko/<substitute your ROM here>

Basically there are several partitions in many ROM installations. ROMs traditionally aimed at targetting the devices with flash or hard disk based storage keep most of their stuff in a READ ONLY partition and when you erase the device to 'Factory' condition some information is extracted from this read only partition into the user partitions.
The information transferred to the user partition will differ with each ROM and with what features are being added/removed/changed and how these changes were implemented. Please note that 'user backups' created using the backup tool in the Settings menu carry this information too.
The following statements therefore hold true.
- Install a non-Sharp ROM without erasing user partitions. - Result subtly broken (or radically broken) installation that will manifest problems that aren't there in a correct install.
- Update a non-Sharp ROM without erasing user partitions. - See result 1.
- Restore a Sharp Backup to a custom ROM or restore a custom ROM backup to the next version ROM - See result 1.
- Backup user files manually (Documents directory etc.) Erase user partitions as suggested. Re-synchronise PIM data, Reinstall IPKs that you want. Restore user files manually. - IT WORKS!
The next question is why don't you need to do this between versions on the Sharp ROMs. The answer is that Sharp don't really change the layout and when they add stuff it tends to be in the region of a single file here and there - following this approach it is feasible to create an installer that 'corrects' the user partition during install of the read only stuff. Not feasible if we are having a major block of features being added.
