Dead Rising follows the harrowing tale of Frank West, an overly zealous freelance photojournalist on the hunt for the scoop of a lifetime. In pursuit of a juicy lead, he makes his way to a small suburban town only to find that it has become overrun by zombies. He escapes to the local shopping mall, thinking it will be a bastion of safety yet it turns out to be anything but. It will be a true struggle to survive the endless stream of enemies, but players will have full reign of a realistic shopping centre, utilizing anything they find to fight off the flesh-hungry mob and search for the truth behind the horrendous epidemic.

Dead Rising features an open level of freedom and offers a vast array of gameplay possibilities. As part of a real time system, time is dynamic in Dead Rising, marching on whether Frank is actively engaged or if simply stationary. Time also plays a role as zombies become more powerful when the sun goes down. Though they move slowly during the day, the zombies become stronger and faster at night, making it even more dangerous for players to survive. The unprecedented numbers of enemies come in never-ending waves and consist of a diverse population of former humans that have retained some memory of their previous lives, which is reflected in their behaviour and appearance. The variety of different stores in the mall offers players an endless supply of resources including vehicles, makeshift weapons and more. Players will also encounter other survivors along the way and by helping them can acquire valuable clues as to what has happened.

Key features:

  • They went shopping, now they're rotten - Next generation "swarm" technology surrounds you with hundreds of on-screen zombies to hack, drive and run through.
  • Lawn mower death - If you can pick it up, you can use it. Over 250 items to cause mayhem with include skateboards, severed arms and circular saws.
  • 72 hour countdown - You decide how to play, as events unfold in the mall. Help other survivors, find the source of the outbreak - or just hide yourself away in a cupboard…

A definite must buy. review by Grant on October 22nd, 2007.
Dead Rising has finally given all Zombie fans their dream.

To play a game, of endless zombies, overpowering a few survivors in a shopping mall.

Ever seen Dawn of the Dead? This is it, with an RPG side to it.
One thing wrong with it is the tiny tiny text, but hey, the gameplay is just AMAZING. Who cares if you cant see Survivor David ranting on about needing more food, or being scared that he cant escape the mall.
Its just dialouge. We all just wanna blow apart zombies.

Everyone else complains about the save system. How missions drag on and on with no saves. Well to fix this problem, you need to goto a save point.

A factor of Dead Rising is time, time to save people, to defeat zombie hordes and get the heck out of a zombie infested shopping mall.

The save point is located at the beginning, in the staff room. And only there for a start. But people rely on auto-saves, and do mission after missxion, survor rescue after survivor rescue, boss after boss without letting their character take a break.

So to fix the 'save issue'... just save.

With 72 hours to escape a shopping mall, this game will give you eternal fun..... yes, eternal.

A Real Gamers game review by Paul on May 8th, 2007.
This is more like you're playing a movie rather than a game.
Fans of Zombie movies,GTA etc will love it as well as all the halo-heads.

Heaps of Freaks to beat up on!

Don't worry about the small text issue...it is a small factor and will not hamper the game experience at all.

Great! review by Dylan on February 15th, 2007.
I dont see how not knowing how to play a game (see first review) can make you give it one star. I loved this game, i played it through multiple times trying out everything possible.

It Rocks! :) review by Waldo on February 4th, 2007.
Awesome, a true original. The Mall during the day is bad enough, but at night go find that glow-in-the-dark play sword to light your way! Endless zombies, be careful not to get surrounded. Good combination of careful planning and extermination with just running for your life. Trying to save others who are stuck in the Mall. And the photography aspect (you are a journalist)!

A very (darkly) humorous game.

One warning - this is one of the most challenging games I have played on the Xbox 360. If you like easy games where you don't need to think or try very hard, this is not for you. If you like something with an edge where you need to be a bit careful, you'll love it.

To the first "Anonymous" below - I can't believe you survived 3 hours without stopping! Wish I could. :) If you really can survive 3 hours without dying (or even 15 minutes), you will have no problem with the game saves - there is a save area in each part of the Mall, just remember to go there now and then!

Great zombie killing fun review by Marc on December 13th, 2006.
Woo hoo a game to kill for. I love killing zombies with bats, hats, pans and even bikes. Freedom everywhere with thousands of bloodthirsty zombies. Great game but time is my worry with a certain period of time.

A great slaughter review by andrew on October 12th, 2006.
Well, first i love mindless violence mixed in with a desperate situation that forces you to relive some mindless horror. The game is great, the save system is realistic i mean really who wants to play an easy game.

The people who made this game capcom have balanced a good story with timed events and alot of situations which can change within seconds. For instance you make it through what you thought was alot of zombies to a save point. Then its a huge mission trying to get out alive its ultra realistic and constantly had me on edge.

The graphics are simple yet effective however the text is hard to read at times however you can adjust the text settings to the tv you are using which kills this problem.

So far there is so many things to do and so little time i have had many cool boss fights against physcopaths which are humans who have gone crazy. But the real seller to me is survival mode hunting down other survivors to live as long as you can is a mode which i appreciate.

The music is great real great and you never know when a threat is around the corner.

A great simple game which you can make deep with no effort.

Zombie killing is fun! review by Adam on October 3rd, 2006.
This game is definitely for fans of zombie movies and games like Resident Evil. I'm a big Resident Evil fan and if you're like me, at some point you would have found yourself wishing you could pick up that decorative sword, candlestick or even a typewriter to smash some zombies' skull with. Well you couldn't in those games, but you sure can here! Pretty much everything you find can be used to kill zombies, from baseball bats and slegdehammers to teddy bears and frisbees, if you can find it, you can probably use it. Or maybe just go for a more hands on approach and beat them to death with your fists!
There are also several ways to play the game too: work your way steadily through the story, or ignore it completely and just go on a zombie killing spree, hold back taking photos, or search for survivors; the choice is yours. No matter how you choose to do it, you'll be having fun.
It's not perfect though, there are some frustrating issues, such as the tiny text, (which has me sitting right in front of my 29" TV) and the save system, but once you get in to the zombie killing zone, you won't notice them as much.
Overall a very good game, and I paid $900 just so I could play it, and so far it has not disappointed.

Excellent! review by James on September 28th, 2006.
How dare you guys give this superb game such a shocking review. This is the game I have been waiting most my gaming life for. The ability to mindlessly slaughter tens of thousands of zombies (LITERALLY) is the most fun I've ever had in a game. I achieved 53,000 kills within 3 days of game time, and they awarded me with Megamans Megabuster. It just keeps getting better. This game is like Dynasty Warriors meet Dawn of the Dead meets Pokemon Snap. YOU HAVE AN XBOX 360 YOU HAVE TO HAVE THIS GAME.

zombies + fun = dead rising review by Mason on September 23rd, 2006.
Well im not too sure why the last two guys gave such shotty reviews, because this game is truley one of a kind. This was the reason i BOUGHT a 360 (well future games too but mainly this one). If you have ever been a fan of George Romero's Dawn of the Dead, then BOY are u in for a treat.
Granted that yes the save system can be very hectic at times, but to me it adds to the overall survival aspect of the game. and the HDTV problem is tru azwell, you cannot see the fine text without one but u can alwayz find ur way thru the missions with the help of guiding arrows, so it really isnt THAT big an issue in my opinion.
No words or description can do justice to the amount of zombies you can have on screen at a time, it is truley something u need to see to beleive! its incredible.
And the ability to use ANYTHING (literally) as a weapon makes for never ending exploration on what weapon suits u the best. (Chainsaws anyone? ;D)
Over all if u want to have a games with a mixture of Dawn of the Dead/GTA this is the one for you, just dont expect to find a game WITHOUT its setbacks. take it as it is and adventure around and you will never lose sight of the fun!

I Hope You Have HD review by Bryce on September 21st, 2006.
It is basically pointless buying this game if you do not have a High-Definition TV (ie almost everyone) as you will not be able to read most of the on-screen text (telling you what to do, the story etc.).
Just do a search on the Dead Rising small text fiasco for more information.
Might be a good game, but don't waste your time if you've got a standard TV.
