The Royal Navy takes very seriously the duty of care it has for all those who serve. In recognising the religious diversity of its personnel, Chaplains are commissioned, from the main Christian denominations, to provide for the spiritual, moral and pastoral needs of the men and women of the Royal Navy. These Chaplains work within the Royal Navy Chaplaincy Service, with the authority of their Church, to provide the services of the Church, to sailors wherever they may find themselves.
Chaplains carry solely the rank of Chaplain, and are known as the "friend and advisor of all on board." Four civilian chaplains have been appointed by the Ministry of Defence, to oversee the provision of the spiritual needs for those serving, who are of other faith groups.
