FRONTLINES: FUEL OF WAR has been available as a downloadable single-player demo from Xbox LIVE for a while now, however as the game release draws closer developer Kaos (formerly known as Trauma Studios, they created the Desert Combat mod for DICE's Battlefield 1942) has released a multi-player demo to showcase some of the more complex aspects of this shooter.
We caught up with the NZ distributors for Frontlines to check out the demo, and from what we can see so far this is shaping up to be a significant title this year. We were taken through the initial opening sequence, and given an introduction to the central concept of the game: the frontline itself.
As part of a team, you can elect to charge straight at the enemy, with fairly predictable results, or you can move to a series of checkpoints designed to move your area of occupation forward. Checkpoints can be captured by a host of ingenious means - Kaos have advised there will be over sixty various types of remote controlled drones and other battlefield aids available in the final release. In the demonstration provided to us, we watched as a small radio-controlled drone was launched and steered under a tank; the detonation that followed allowed capture of that point and the ability to move your team forward in relative safety. Likewise, with an unmanned aerial drone that we flew through a skylight into a building and took out several enemy combatants before they knew we were there. It's not always necessary to use these battlefield aids, but they sure are fun!
Kaos has a vested interest in promoting community activities - they are keenly aware from their previous experience with Desert Combat the importance the community plays in the success of this genre. They have already indicated that downloadable material is on the way, so it will be interesting to see how Frontlines evolves over the next few months.
The full version of Frontlines: Fuel of War will support 32 players online for Xbox 360 and 64 for PC, and will be released very soon.
