Channel [W] might just sound like a wacky music channel. But incidentally this intranet portal of Wipro has all the masala to have the employees coming back for more. Information on Cha Cha Cha and Salsa workshops, live chats with Sri Sri Ravishankar, Kiran Karnik and Dr. Devi Shetty and, even a matrimonial section. If you thought that was fascinating, Khazana, the Infosys' intranet portal, has the techie community clued in, especially for the polls. The last one, to choose the Indian James Bond, had development centres in different regions feverishly voting for Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Rajnikant and Chiranjeevi! Did you say utility? At Satyam World, the associates can post on the classifieds listing, for a camera or an apartment. There you go.

Think intranet and what comes to mind is a protected environment for sharing data or accessing mail servers. Not anymore. Today it is a live platform that comes as a welcome break and a boon to out-of-towners. "Wish we had online ticket booking with Prasad's Imax or a matrimonial page," prays Satish, a B-School graduate. The intranet is a ready reckoner for everything fromthe best plumber around to rentals, restaurants and sightseeing spots.

Adds Tejaswini, a technical writer, "We have a section dedicated to bibliophiles, where folks can share information on volumes, review and exchange the books around. And another for the travelling enthusiast where folks meet up and decide where to go and the logistics, all geared to having loads of fun on a weekend break. For young techie-migrants far away from the comforts of home and parental care, intranet is a way to settle down and feel at home." As for the MNCs spanning countries and time zones, the intranet is one common place to touch base.

"You can find the hand book, HR, work and policy related information, news updates, fun spots and sections like My Space where articles written by the Satyam associates can be posted. I guess it binds the organisation together apart from informing people on what is happening around them," says Ritesh Kumar, assistant manager, corporate communications. "The intranet does help in engaging the employees by providing a platform. This bonding is also ensured with periodic special portals as well as offline events. The most popular section in the employee portal is the message boards - giving them a space to exchange ideas or voice out opinions," says Sunayana Suresh of Wipro.

There is invariably a softer side to the geek world of long hours, deadlines and the works. Well, the next time you need to connect beyond the cubicle, help is just a click away.

A few facts

Company lore has it that Bob Buckman, CEO Buckman Laboratories, headquartered in Memphis with operations in more than 80 countries, conceived of an information sharing network, when he was bedridden with a bad back and frustrated at being out of touch with his company. Similar customised knowledge networks were underway in other companies to share information about employees, services and skills, which came to be known as intranet that all employees of a company have access to.

But today the concept has more to do with organisation behaviour in IT.. Enter popular awards of employee recognition Great Communicator, Great Mentor, Terrific Trouble shooter, et al, to be voted by employees online and of posting e-greetings and lauding achievements of kin. That intranet has hit the bull's eye is evident by employees voting on all issues, calamities, and more.
