Introduction

OSU graphic identity guidelines

The Graphic Identity Guidelines are at the center of OSU's communications strategy. The guidelines provide a roadmap for presenting the university in a cohesive and powerful way to our diverse internal and external audiences. The guidelines consist of an integrated system of graphic elements, including the OSU logo, the university color palette, recommended typefaces and applications to an extended stationery system, presentation media and the OSU Web. The guidelines assist communicators in the consistent and effective use of these graphic elements across all media, print and electronic.

the OSU logo

There are four variations of the logo, to allow for flexibility of use in different media and formats. To ensure recognition beyond the Pacific Northwest, the "OSU" initials should always be used with the words "Oregon State University" and not used alone unless permission is granted by the Vice President for University Advancement. Requests to use the "OSU" separately will be considered if required by the medium or format, and if the special use serves to advance the university's mission, visibility, and reputation.

Oregon State University

  • Companion logos are provided for OSU's 11 colleges, as well as the Extension Service, Ecampus, OSU-Cascades Campus, the Hatfield Marine Science Center and Portland Metro.
  • All publications, print and electronic, published by Oregon State University, must prominently display an approved logo. Instructions for correct use of the logo are included in the Graphic Identity Guidelines.
  • The university marks are registered trademarks, and cannot be altered in any way.

who are the guidelines for?

All academic, research, outreach, student services and administrative units of Oregon State University that are funded though or by the university, and are not legally autonomous, must follow the guidelines described here. Outside agencies that create print or electronic publications for any OSU units are also required to follow the guidelines. Student organizations should not use the graphic identity elements without prior approval by University Publications or University Marketing.

commercial and promotional uses of the university marks

Oregon State University asserts ownership over its name, marks, slogans mascot or any combination of these which refer to, or are associated with OSU. The OSU marks cannot be used to imply or suggest endorsement of any product or service not provided by the university. The university logos, President's seal, Athletics logo and other marks are registered and protected by law.

Individuals and organizations outside the university who wish to use any of the university marks for commercial purposes or for promotional activities, must first obtain permission from the Office of Trademark Licensing.
