New Details On Codemasters New Strategy Game
Posted by Big Gaz @ 7:50 a.m. NZDT

Codemasters have released new information on their upcoming game, "World War II"(working title) for the PC.

The game will feature an original system dubbed Frontline that gives individual soldiers and units the potential to display everything from heroism to confidence, despair and cowardice, thanks to a new morale-based system.

Codemasters Studio Head Jonathan Smith says "World War II was about much more than abstract 'units' moving around in textbook tactical formations. "It was about heroism, and panic, and courage, and fear – about soldiers performing extraordinary actions in extraordinary circumstances. The Frontline system creates a game where real human emotions are just as important as strategy."

"Designed by The Bitmap Brothers, the game's developers, the Frontline system creates a graphical onscreen representation of the player's units' morale, health and vision within the game. A unit's morale changes in real-time and is vitally important to its effectiveness. All units whether singularly – such as a sniper – or grouped together have a morale state, which directly affects their combat accuracy and response time to situations. If a morale is exceptionally high, the combat effectiveness will be raised substantially and make it easier to achieve current objectives. If an individual's morale peaks, there is a chance that they will perform a heroic act, such as putting a grenade through an enemy bunker or pillbox. If morale is particularly low, the unit's combat effectiveness when fighting will drop accordingly. In the worst case scenario units will freeze in combat. However, a player can bolster morale by bringing battle-weary units back from the front lines or sending in reinforcements to help out."

Due to be published this autumn for PC, World War II will capture the heroism of World War II's most significant battles, including Operation Market Garden, and the Battle of the Bulge. Stay tuned for more details.

Xbox Sales Slow In Japan
Posted by Big Gaz @ 7:45 a.m. NZDT

Bloomberg have reported that Microsoft sold approximately 123,000 Xbox units during the console's Japanese launch this past weekend.

"Microsoft reportedly shipped around 250,000 units for the launch, 50,000 of which were the limited-edition version of the console. Twelve games were available at launch, but only an average of 1.59 games were actually sold with each console. The fact that Microsoft is new to the console market, as well as the Xbox's high price point when compared with that of the PlayStation 2 and the GameCube, were cited as possible reasons for the relatively low launch numbers."

New Multiplayer Maps For Renegade
Posted by Big Gaz @ 7:43 a.m. NZDT

Westwood Studios has revealed that it is testing two new multiplayer maps for Command & Conquer Renegade that will allow players to control air-based vehicles from the original Command & Conquer RTS game.

The new flying units, taken from the original Command & Conquer strategy game, are the GDI Orca, an advanced helicopter armed with powerful chain guns and missiles. The Nod Apache attack helicopter, also armed with chain guns and missiles, and the Chinook troop transport, a large helicopter that can carry five troops. Both Nod and GDI will have this versions of this vehicle.

The "City" and "Walls" maps included in the final version of the game serve as the basis for the new maps. Most of the buildings have also been modified to allow for rooftop access.

"During Renegade's beta test phase, the most frequent request from the testers was for us to incorporate flying vehicles," said Executive Producer Dan Cermak. "We're thrilled to be able to finally honor their request and are working hard now on making sure the maps and units will be as balanced as possible."

The new maps will be available via a downloadable patch within a few weeks after the game's release.

Xbox Hits Japan
Posted by Big Gaz @ 10:44 a.m. NZDT

The Microsoft Xbox has been released in Japan.

"TOKYO Feb. 22, 2002. Three months after a triumphant North American launch, Microsoft Corp. Chairman Bill Gates is taking the XboxTM video game system into new territory, launching the future-generation console in Japan today.

"Japanese gamers are among the most sophisticated in the world, and Xbox is the future-generation game system that matches their sophistication, fires their imagination and tests their skills," Gates said, as he greeted the first gamers in Japan to buy Xbox.

"Today's Xbox launch demonstrates our long-term commitment to Japanese video game players", said Robbie Bach, chief Xbox officer (CXO) at Microsoft. "Xbox is just getting started in Japan, and already the launch lineup of games is very strong. It's amazing to see what many of the legendary Japanese game designers have been able to accomplish on Xbox."

Xbox is on sale at thousands of Japanese retail outlets, and 12 titles are available. The launch lineup includes great titles from the top names in video games, such as Sega Corp., Konami Corp., Capcom Co. Ltd., Tecmo Ltd. and Microsoft Corp. A total of 22 titles are scheduled to be available in Japan by the end of March. Many of these Japanese games have global appeal and may be localized in various markets around the world."

Strangely, there is still no word on a New Zealand release. The console is due to launch in Australia in a few weeks time, and alot of NZ gamers have already ordered their machines from across the ditch. Unless details are released soon, the Xbox launch in New Zealand is going to be a non event, and that would be a big shame for such a promising machine.

New Line Signs State Of Emergency Deal
Posted by Big Gaz @ 8:02 a.m. NZDT

New Line Cinema has signed a deal to bring a movie based on the Playstation 2 and PC game State of Emergency (out now in the U.S, due here soon).

"New Line Cinema, the company behind the blockbuster film, The Lord of the Rings, The Fellowship of the Ring, has joined forces with Zide/Perry Entertainment to bring VIS entertainment plc's (VIS) hottest new game, State of Emergency, to the screen, it was announced today by Toby Emmerich, president of production for New Line Cinema.

Commenting on the movie deal Chris van der Kuyl, President of VIS stated;

"The opportunity to partner with both NewLine and Zide/Perry, two of Hollywood's most successful companies, gives the Team at VIS the ability to take the this franchise to the next level. The partnership between Rockstar, a division of Take 2 Interactive Inc (NASDAQ: TTWO) our publishers, and VIS which has created a game with such potential can only be enhanced by the addition of our new partners."

State of Emergency is set in an Orwellian future in which social and economic chaos has left a city in the hands of a monolithic corporation that only a handful of resistance fighters have the courage to take on. State of Emergency will be adapted by Damian Shannon and Mark Swift and produced by Zide/Perry's Warren Zide and Craig Perry, the Team behind the blockbuster 'American Pie' films.

"To be able to create a franchisable action movie that appeals to young audiences based on a highly successful video game is something we've been looking for and State of Emergency is a perfect fit," Zide said. "We're thrilled to be producing this movie for New Line, which has shared our enthusiasm from the beginning."

Ecco The Dolphin This Week
Posted by Big Gaz @ 7:59 a.m. NZDT

One of Sega's biggest names, Ecco the Dolphin, will be hitting the Playstation 2 this week.

"Even the most die-hard Sony fan would have to concede that rival outfit Sega has produced its fair share of classic games for consoles like the Megadrive, Saturn and Dreamcast. One of the best known and loved has to be Ecco The Dolphin. Now comes a sequel that for the first time bring the aquatic adventure to the Playstation 2 format. Once again the fate of the world rests with Ecco, with an evil alien race travelling back in time to rob dolphinkind of the higher intelligence that is essential to the future harmony of man and dolphin. Okay, so it's a loopy plot, but what matters is the way the game manages to be simultaneously sooth and excite, the underwater action flowing with remarkable fluidity as Ecco and the other equally brilliantly animated creatures glide through the water. The game still offers one heck of challenge, though, as Ecco travels through alternate timelines, using a psychic harness to operation machinery, his natural sonar abilities to communicate, and his slender form to explore dangerous underwater environments. Best of all, Ecco's adventures are now played out using a full 3D viewpoint. Just watching Ecco move through the water is completely mesmerising."

Ecco the Dolphin is being distributed by SCEE NZ, and will have an RRP of $119.95. It should be on store shelves this Thursday/Friday.

Postal 2 Announced
Posted by Big Gaz @ 8:16 a.m. NZDT

The first Postal game didn't make it "officially" to our shores back in the mid 1990's, because it was a wee bit violent. So it's going to be interesting to see what happens with its sequel, which was announced yesterday by developer Running With Scissors. Here's some of the very wacky press release.

"It's as much fun as pouring gasoline on a grease fire and caffeinating sex rolled into one!" screamed a jubilant Vince Desi in referring to licensing Epic Games' UNREAL™ Warfare engine. "The spineless bastards who pretend to represent the interests of the non game-playing public are going to **** themselves when they see this!"

Why make POSTAL 2? As a responsible videogame development company, our first obligation is to our fans and all video game players. Wracked with remorse over the legendary POSTAL and the irreparable damage to the mental fabric of society it caused, we decided to atone by making a "politically corrected" game about the most boring subject we could think of: a guy going to buy milk.

Mark Rein, Vice President of Epic Games, cautioned, "Frankly, these Running With Scissors guys are out of their minds; the thought of them using the UNREAL™ Warfare engine to make POSTAL 2 totally disgusts us," adding, "I'm not sure our technology works in Hell, but we'll find out."

Exploding with joy, the Running With Scissors team believes that Epic Games'industry benchmark UNREAL™ Warfare engine technology is the perfect match for their next morality-twisting gaming experience. Desi went on to drool, "I feel like a high school freshman thrown into the girls' shower - this is Excellent!"

"With screaming UNREAL™ Warfare engine technology from Epic Games, Inc., Running With Scissors is locked and loaded like never before. Running With Scissors is getting ready to frag 'em and shag 'em in extra-crispy first-person style. Why? Because everyone knows the POSTAL™ Dude always delivers."

Icewind Dale 2 Announced
Posted by Big Gaz @ 7:57 a.m. NZDT

The worlds best RPG developer, Black Isle Studios (yes, they are better than Squaresoft ;)), today have announced that they have Icewind Dale 2 in development for the PC.

"A generation after the events in Icewind Dale, a grave new threat has arisen in the North; a threat that seeks to cut off the Ten-Towns from the rest of Faerun in a bitter power struggle. A vicious horde of goblins, orcs, and bugbears have gathered beneath the mysterious banner of the Chimera and are attacking the port town of Targos. The town of Bremen has fallen, goblin raiders ride the plains, and a stream of refugees are fleeing southwards to Bryn Shander and beyond. Fearing that they will be overrun, Targos has sent out a call for all able-bodied adventurers, soldiers, and mercenaries to sail north to stand with the town's defenders against the encroaching horde, and it's up to the players' small band of adventurers to save Targos from destruction. Yet nothing is as it appears and as the shadow of the horde falls on Targos, the players find themselves drawn into an escalating conflict that plunges the region of Icewind Dale once again, into war.

Icewind Dale II makes use of a heavily modified version of the award- winning BioWare(TM) Infinity Engine, originally developed for the Baldur's Gate(TM) series. Modifications to the engine include a variety of features originally developed for Baldur's Gate(TM) II: Shadows of Amn(TM), including dual-wielding, class kits, new classes such as the Sorcerer and Monk as well as 3D technology developed by BioWare. Icewind Dale II introduces new class kits like the Mercenary, Giant Killer and the Dreadmaster of Bane among others, plus new sub-races including the Drow and Tiefling."

Icewind Dale 2 has an offical U.S release date of May 28th, 2002, and we shouldn't be to far behind. In the meantime, to find out more about the game, head over to the Official Webpage.

Re-Thinking Celda.
Posted by @ 7:46 a.m. NZDT

In a recent article concerning the state of the industry, MSNBC's video game journalist Steven Kent spoke with Peter Main, Nintendo of America's former Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing, about the cel-shaded Zelda game for GameCube.

Kent wrote: "One piece of news that will come as a relief to many gamers is that Nintendo is re-thinking the cel-shaded version of The Legend of Zelda that was unveiled last August at its Spaceworld trade show."

When Nintendo unveiled the new cel-shaded version of The Legend of Zelda at the Spaceworld trade show, fans around the world (and journalists) were completely astonished at the change compared to what was shown at the previous Spaceworld the year before. One showed a more realistic approach to the world of Hyrule where-as the recent incarnation seems more like a childs cartoon.

Peter Main informed Steven Kent that Shigeru Miyamoto, the game's head designer, is considering the public's viewpoints. "You mean that contentious look? What Miyamoto ends up with will truly reflect all of the words he has heard, but the sentiments that he holds true to make sure that Zelda continues to titillate all the fans that it has attracted over the years."

There are however people looking forward to this version of the game, including many Gameplanet staff and members.

Hardware change to PAL GameCube
Posted by @ 7:19 a.m. NZDT

Sources have revealed that Nintendo may be changing the way it sees its long suffering PAL customers.

What could this change be? A 60Hz option on start-up!. But not just any 60Hz option. When the PAL machine finally comes out in the near future, remember this one thing. On start-up, hold down the B button, and bingo, its NTSC. The thing is though, you must have a TV that supports NTSC, otherwise you'll be stuck with the same old borders and 17% less speed, no matter how many times you press that B button.

Sounds great! Maybe Nintendo is finally coming around and wants to do something nice for PAL gamers for a change...

Lucasarts Sign Giants Developer
Posted by Big Gaz @ 7:53 a.m. NZDT

Lucasarts have announced that they have signed up Planet Moon Studios, makers of the hit PC game Giants, to develop a new "Humorous Action Game" for next generation consoles.

"With Planet Moon's development of a unique humorous action game for LucasArts now madly underway, I suspect the pubs around its Sausalito, Calif., headquarters may be in for some tough economic times," says Simon Jeffery, president of LucasArts. "In seriousness, a relationship with Planet Moon is an obvious choice for LucasArts. It's one that will complement the brand of humor for which we're well known and bring to our fans the kind of game they've always loved."

"Our past games have focused on two things: being late and over budget," says Nick Bruty, Planet Moon's president and co-founder. "Joking aside, this is the most exciting thing we've ever created, with the best fit between developer and publisher we could imagine. There is no one with a more consistent record in action titles and genuinely funny games than LucasArts."

The new game is not expected until early 2003.

First 2 Disc GameCube Game
Posted by @ 7:38 a.m. NZDT

Capcom are ready to set a new standard with the Nintendo GameCube.

With the Japanese remake of Resident Evil (Biohazard) almost finished sources have revealed that it will be released over 2 discs. Many third-party developers are getting used to the standard of the Xbox and Playstation 2 sized DVDs, making ports difficult on GameCube. Hopefully the difference in cost for the extra disc isn't too much that others will be discouraged from doing the same. If not then we may see more ports heading over to the Gamecube but on more discs. It is speculated that all of the full-motion video sequences, pre-rendered backgrounds, and audio easily pushed Resident Evil over the 1.5Gb mark.

Gamers can expect to see Gamecube in New Zealand hopefully in May. Stay tuned.
