Trigun v2
Reviewed by Dan Polley

Vash the Stampede is being tailed and the guy doing the tailing — Legato — is good. And he gets Vash in some compromising positions early on in the second omnibus volume of Trigun by Yasuhiro Nightow.

In this volume, more of Vash’s history comes to light as he spends the volume trying to find Legato and his boss, Knives. It seems Vash has some history with Knives and wishes to revisit that history once and for all.

But in the process, 12 bounty hunters will be after Vash. Those 12 bounty hunters have each been given half of a coin. The other half to all those coins was left for Vash by Legato. It’s up to Vash to make sure those bounty hunters don’t claim the other half of their coin — and Vash’s life.

The going gets better when Vash and company assist Wolfwood, who’s straggling to get across the desert during Vash’s caravan across the treacherous terrain.

But as more and more of Vash’s past is revealed, the more and more Vash becomes unlike his normal happy-go-lucky self and transforms into a darker person whose only instincts are his hatred and anger.

And that sets up just nicely for the reunion between Vash and Knives.

The characters progress in this volume of the series and Vash becomes much more interesting when he is not roped in as his usual self. The more he becomes unglued at the emotional seams, the more interesting he becomes as a character.

The art is tremendous. It’s especially noteworthy seeing as how the artistic style matches exactly with the plot and with Vash’s character, a tough, grimy art that comes alive in when combined with the Wild West attitude that permeates the series.

Trigun is a fantastic and quirky manga that combines all elements of a successful story well. The plot, art and characters come together in a euphoric sense of mayhem and destruction.
