Today in the News Media

Today in the News Media is a synopsis of some of the most prominent coverage of OSU people and programs. Inclusion of any item constitutes neither an endorsement nor a critique, but rather is intended only to make the OSU community aware of significant items in the media.

Oregon State 27, No. 1 USC 21
(The New York Times, more than 900 others)

Less than two weeks ago, Southern California established itself as the country’s top team when it routed No. 5 Ohio State. Rekindling the magic of the glory years of Matt Leinart and Reggie Bush was short-lived and its national championship hopes are in jeopardy. Oregon State stunned the visiting Trojans, 27-21, Thursday night for the first jaw-dropping upset of the season. The Beavers (2-2) turned the national title race on its ear and the reverberations can be heard in Oklahoma, Georgia, Florida, Louisiana and Missouri. The Trojans (2-1) could not find a way to stop the 5-foot-6 Oregon State tailback Jacquizz Rodgers, who carried the ball 37 times for 186 yards. He joked in a postgame television interview that the Trojan defenders could not find him because he is a “little dude.”

Newport wave energy test called a cuccess
(OPB Radio)

A young Oregon company is claiming to be the first on the West Coast to harvest electricity from ocean swells. That's after a prototype wave energy buoy bobbed in the waves off Newport for four days. Correspondent Tom Banse reports that Columbia Power Technologies partnered with Oregon State University for the sea trial. “They pronounce the performance of their four-ton bright yellow buoy a ‘major success.’ Research engineer Joe Prudell says the experimental model generated more than enough juice to light a typical home.”

Oregon legislative panel backs more financial aid for students
(The Oregonian)

A legislative panel endorsed spending an additional $4 million on college financial aid Thursday, a move expected to make grant money available to several thousand more students. While the amount is a small sliver of overall state spending, lawmakers said it was enough to make them uneasy. The worry comes from the slow economy combined with the current two-year budget that is projected to have little money left after schools and other services are paid for. "Are we funding this with money we don't have?" said Sen. Frank Morse, an Albany Republican whose district includes Oregon State University in Corvallis.
