JZX90 MarkII TourerV

Welcome to the Australian home of the great Toyota TourerV. (since 2003)

This family of vehicles known as the TourerV are a 2.5L 6 Cylinder twin turbo powered sedan with quality appointments and solid engineering.

More photos and info can be found on my Toyota JZX90 MarkII Car Domain site.

Some pictures and video of the car drifting can be found on my Toyota JZX90 blog site.

In Australia, automotively speaking, we are fed on a diet of overweight, underdeveloped, budget-engineered museum pieces, that are passed off as motor vehicles to the general unassuming public. Sure, Holden and Ford have proved that they can make a car look good, hell I even got sucked in to owning a few myself, however the vehicle underneath the skin has no soul in comparison to some of the other offerings. Ford seem to be constantly advertising their lastest model Falcon with it's "more powerful than ever" engine while neglecting to add that it is also a heavier vehicle than ever before, which happens to negate the advantage of the greater power. Holden's design and build quality is nothing more than cheap and nasty, evidenced by poorly designed suspension geometry and tacky, flimsy plastic controls. Now even when they do deliver with a decently powered engine (borrowed from America because our local R&D couldn't produce the goods) the prices are astronomical. Who in their right mind spends in excess of $70,000 for what is essentially a tarted up run of the mill family sedan. My apologies to those who have done so, but honestly I dont see that as value for money.

Unfortunately, when it comes to performance for a price, most other manufacturers fail to deliver the goods as well. I am speaking here from a drivers perspective; from one who appreciates a well engineered vehicle that is exciting to drive. In the Australian market, many of the good models that were produced by the better automotive manufacturers of the world, were somehow, (one can only assume), overlooked by sheer ignorance and penny-pinching on the part of those in control of model choice in the Australian market. Of course I am speaking about mass-produced affordable cars, and not considering expensive purpose built cars like Ferrari, Lamborghini or even Porsche for that matter.

Even Toyota Australia in what I consider to be greedy stupidity, delivered to us the ugly, American styled, front wheel drive Avalon. "Ave a long drive" the advertisments said. I prefer that they have a long think about choosing a decent rear wheel drive car for the Australian market that has a bit more performance and flair.

OK, enough ranting about dull boardroom table decisions and on to discover what is arguably the most logical natural predator of the so-called Aussie muscle cars.

When it comes to bang for buck, and straight out-of-the-factory performance for the budget conscious motoring enthusiast, nothing comes close to our current crop of Japanese Low Volume Imports. In particular the 1JZ powered X-series of sedans by Toyota. The JZX90 and JZX100 (and the earlier JZX81 for that matter) have factory performance that slaughters the local offerings. For example, the automatic JZX90 TourerV in stock standard trim, traverses the quarter mile in around 13.6 seconds and charges from 0 to 100km/h in about 6.5 seconds. Not bad for a luxury rear wheel drive family sedan.

Open the exhaust up a little and put in a boost controller and those times will drop to around 13.2 and 6.2 respectively. A full sized sedan with generous boot space, electric everything, ABS, traction control, climate control weighs in at only 1460kg. A far cry from the porcine 1750kg(approx) for the Falcon. Toyota has endowed the sporty 1JZ motor with 362NM at 4800 rpm and 206kW at 6800rpm (368NM at 2400rpm and 206kW@6800rpm for the VVTi version in the JZX100) which is phenomenal for a mass-produced 2.5L engine this side of the exotics. If you decide to replace the twin ceramic turbos with a bigger single turbo, then the 1JZ motor can reliably produce 600HP at the wheels with completely stock internals. Try that with any other mass-produced motor vehicle (even the legendary Nissan GTR with its RB26DETT) and you will end up in tears, with a giant mess of mangled metal parts under the bonnet.

Toyota JZ engines ROCK!!!

This site is essentially a log book and series of "how to" articles for the Toyota JZX90 MarkII TourerV and follows the development path I take with it. With the mods I have performed thus far, the car has delivered substantial gains in both performance and handling, and most importantly, has raised the fun factor index considerably. The car is a fantastic performer from the outset, but given each modification it is easily improved to gradually become better and better.

Please enjoy your stay, and I welcome and feedback you have to offer.

Turbo pages and Headlights
I have recently added a new page about my single turbo conversion. There is a second page yet to come, but page one outlines some of the supporting components needed as well as the turbo itself. Page 2 will be forthcoming where I detail the fitment of the turbo, manifold and wastegate. I have also added a page for modifications to my headlights that should be very useful for owners of import vehicles.

Site Revamp
Wow, it has been a very long time since I worked on the site, but now I am in the process of redesigning it so stay tuned as I add some more content and attempt to bring this project up to date.

Car Changes
Lots has happened since my last update on upgrades to the car. For instance the car is now running a 2JZ bottom end and the gearbox has been completely rebuilt with a stage 1.5 shift kit, beefier clutches and a 2800 rpm stall convertor. To say that this has transformed the car is an understatement. The car is now torque heaven, and is an absolute pleasure to drive. The lag that was sadly felt with the 2.5L motor is now completely gone with the 3L and the stally. When I can find time to update the site with the process I went through I will do so. I have many hundreds of pictures to add.
