Harmonious communities
City Square

The Leeds Initiative is the city’s strategic partnership. Founded in 1990, we bring together the public, private, community and voluntary sectors to work together to achieve success, encourage improvement, and tackle and overcome problems for the benefit of all citizens now and in the future.

As the local strategic partnership, our main tasks are to:

  • prepare, put into practice, monitor and review a community strategy;
  • bring together local plans, partnerships and initiatives to allow effective joint working to meet local needs;
  • work with local authorities on public service agreements; and
  • develop and deliver a local neighbourhood renewal strategy aimed at achieving the national targets to tackle deprivation.

In 2004 the Leeds Initiative published the Vision for Leeds 2004 to 2020, a long term plan for the ongoing economic, cultural and environmental development of the city. This plan is being developed and put into practice by a number of strategy and partnership groups working as part of the Leeds Initiative. All of these groups have a wide range of networks that bring together over 500 organisations under the Leeds Initiative family.

The Leeds Initiative Board is responsible for deciding overall policy and making decisions, and is made up of 40 members from organisations in the public, private, voluntary and community sectors. Their organisations will carry out a lot of the work involved in putting into practice the Vision for Leeds.
